Videos vs. DVD

Hello, I am new to this board and new to Cathe. My sister-in-law recommended her to me and let me borrow some of her tapes. I love them...I am currently using Mega Step Blast, since that is what most people in past messages have suggested..and love it.

Here is my question(s)...I currently have a DVD player, however, I was wondering if it is worth investing in the DVDs or taking advantage of Cathe's offers with VHS? Also, since I am starting out with weights...could someone please give me some advice as to rotation and suggestions on weights (weight, brand, barbells, etc). Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I have checked previous posts and read other rotation advise, however, since I am new to weights and am just learning...I thought some of you might have some insight/info :) Maybe I should just start with the CTX which, to my understanding, is cardio and weight training basically. Cathe has so many tapes that she offers...I just need some good ones to get me started.

Also, if you have any advise as to rotation with Cathe's tapes, could you please include what weights are required when doing the tapes you recommend. Thanks. This will help me when I go out shopping to look for your recommendations :)

My main goal is to lose weight (I am currently doing WW) and I have realized that to stay in shape, I need to exercise and eat right.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to any advise you all have to offer,

amy

I would definitely encourage you to go with the DVDs! The only advantage the videos have over them is that you'll get the videos a month earlier (which seems like a huge advantage at times!). I love the flexibility of DVD, as well as the clarity. I think of video vs. DVD like cassette tapes vs. CDs. If you're going to use Cathe's new routines often, DVD will hold up much better in the long run. I had the PS series on video, and recently got the DVD version- it seems like a whole new workout! (And I like the fact that I can let "the class" move on to the next section if I'm not ready yet, and easily and quickly go back to the beginning of the section instead of rewinding and putting wear on a tape.

There are some DVD owners out there who order the DVD sets, but also pick up one or two of the videos, in order to avoid the wait. You can then sell the videos on Ebay (Cathe tapes sell well) and get some of your investment back.

As for what weight routines to use, I really enjoy the CTX series, since it combines aerobics and weights, and I've found the weight work to be very effective. As a beginner, you may want to go for a total body workout (most experts recommend a total body weight routine for beginners 2-3 days a week.) Though it's labeled an "advanced" routine, you could go with Maximum intensity strength, and use light weights to start (that's the beauty of weight training, you can adapt the workout by changing weights). Other Cathe fans have recommended "the Wedding tape" as a good weight and aerobic tape. I haven't tried it myself (the "clips from the wedding" stuff isn't for me), but I've seen a lot of good feedback about it. The thing is, if you're an advanced exerciser the step portion might be a bit too basic (but you could always skip it).

DVD's are totally worth it!!

I just did a workout today using the Pure Strength DVD and it was terrific. You can mix & match whatever sections you want from the workouts. No more fast forwarding or rewinding. Also your DVD's won't wear out like VHS tapes eventually will. I am looking so forward to getting the new 12-pack that I have on pre-order. I wish I could get all my exercise videos on DVD. SNM is the greatest for being on the cutting edge of the exercise DVD business.
