Jari Love's Ripped Slim & Lean

Has anyone has purchased this workout? It says it's a high rep/low weight workout which is what I'm looking for. The video clip on her website didn't show much of the workout and neither did Collage Video. I did notice that Shape Magazine and Fitness Magazine gave it high praise. Any other thoughts on her as an instructor and the workout itself? Cathe sets the bar pretty high.

Thanks!
Terri

I used S&L every Sunday for 2 months along with RTTC every Friday. I liked it for the different pace. I saw some pretty large gains as well when I went back to Cathe....for example, on PUB, when I last did it, I was doing 5#, 8#, 10# for biceps curls, now I match Cathe. The same goes with all the PUB work except the chest flys....just not there yet!

I know that another poster here, Nancy uses S&L all the time because she can break it up into the 5-10 segments to fit into her day and loves it!

I found both of mine at Ross Dress for Less for about $5 each. Jari Love is a bit different to get used to and I found her cueing on the cooldown/stretching left something to be desired, but all in all, I liked her workouts and will continue to add them to supplement Cathe. Her voice takes a bit to get used to, but once you are in the groove, you can tune her out.

I just ordered this as it was only $14.99 so stuck it in with a couple of new Cathe DVDs from Collage. It'll be interesting to compare.

Hi Terri,
i bought this a few weeks ago on the recommendation of some posters here. I find Jari is very different to Cathe - then again i feel very spoilt with Cathe (a hi/lo class this week drove me insane with the lack of cueing). Jari does cue well and her enthusiastic comments are quite welcome at times (other times i could do without them). Cathe has definitely set the bar very high.

The breakdown of the workout is as follows (from an Amazon site reviewer) is:
squats (76 reps plus pulsing)
lunges (front/back, 94 total plus pulsing)
chest presses (64 plus pulsing)
bent leg deadlifts/deadrows (30 deadlifts, 54 rows plus pulsing)
pushups/rotator cuff (45 pushups, 32 rotator cuff)
tricep dips/french press (24 dips, 56 french press)
bicep/hammer curls (46 curls plus pulsing, 36 hammer curls)
one leg squats/wide squats (44 1 leg plus pulsing,38 wide plus pulsing)
overhead press/lateral raise (34 overheads, 28 lateral)
abs
It is basically one track per section - so 12 sections in total. The weights used vary between 3lbs(rotator cuff - i think) and 20lbs on barbell.
I have to say that the hour moves very quickly and even though i have only used it 4 times in the past 2 weeks i feel that i have gained. The only thing is the abs section isn't as intense as a Cathe abs workout - i don't get the "i've just worked my abs feeling".
I'm sure you will enjoy if only to mix things up abit.
Have fun

I use Jari Love's workouts to shake things up. I think of her workouts as cardio weight training. S&L is one of Jari's that I was able to haeay up on and I like that. Some people don't care for Jari as an instructor and her music is not as good or loud enough, but I appreciate the workouts for what they are. Cross training is helping me immensely, especially to enjoy working out and keep myself from getting burned out with Cathe. I think everyone will feel differently about these workouts. I don't care for the original Ripped but S&L, GRTTC, and GR1000 are keepers in my book. I'm also looking forward to her newest one....Ripped & Chisled. Let us know what you think of S&L after you've tried it. I'm somewhat hesitant to reccommend other instructors on this site, b/c, I, for the longest time was die hard Cathe and anyone else I tried disappointed me and I'm afraid that's the case for many here. This past year, I've finally found some other instructors and workouts that I enjoy, sometimes as much as Cathe and it's been a nice change of pace and nice to have more workout options.

In viewing this and her others, I thought I would not like them, but when I actually did the work-outs, I found they are good solid work-outs. S&L you can up your weights on, I found 1000 moves too fast, but is more circuits anyway. I was pleasantly surprised about Jari's work-outs, because I too have found no weight videos better than Cathe's.

I just bought slime and lean and RTTC and have only previewed them . To me I think I will like RTTC better but will know more when I try them. she definately seems different but all in all they look like good workouts.

Jari can be found annoying by some. She's very barbie-doll like, etc. She puts out a tough work out though. Slim and Lean is AWESOME! They show you what weights Jari and crew use to give you an idea of what to use. The rep count is VERY high. You will feel the burn for sure! I think it's an EXCELLENT work out. They all are except for the original Ripped and that's only because it's an intermediate vid so many Catheites will not find it challenging enough.

HTH!:)

Hi Terri,

I purchased S&L, RTTC and R1000 on the recommendation of a couple of people on this board. I am very pleased with all of them. IMHO RTTC is slightly better than S&L, but they are both excellent workouts if you are interested in high rep/low weight workouts. As others have mentioned, her style takes some getting used to. And if you do purchase one of them, don't be turned off when you preview the workout. As Kathryn put it, they are "better in the doing than in the viewing" (or something to that effect). HTH

As Amy mentioned, I really do like S&L. I think it's TOTALLY a matter of taste.

I find Jari to be genuinely nice and encouraging and friendly, and I really respond to that. To me, she is a kinder, gentler instructor, and if you like kinder and gentler, then give it a try. I actually find her voice rather soothing.

As for looking like a barbie doll, I have a different opinion from Wendy's. I think Jari, like Cathe, wears a lot of make-up and has her hair done for the video (granted, Cathe's team is better at the "natural look", and Cathe is naturally MUCH better-looking than Jari anyway), but Jari does not appear to have had anything on her body augmented to look like a barbie doll. Personally, I have issues with instructors who have bodies that were "helped" by surgery, but I don't see that in Jari at all. She's thinner than she should be, and maybe her hairdresser went a bit overboard, but that's about it.

My Ripped to the Core arrived yesterday, and I'll be trying it soon.

ETA: Thanks to AmyG, I got mine for $8.00 at http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=RZD000363 :D

I like Jari's workout. I think her type of higher-rep, lower weight, almost continuous movement weight workouts burn fat better than straight-set workouts and have somewhat of a cardio effect as well. Her "this burns all carbs" talk is annoying (as well as untrue), but I ignore it.

I think her workouts are a good change from Cathe's style, and I sweat like a sumo wrestler running up a flight of stairs when I do them (I think/hope that's a sign of calorie burn). They are rather deceiving, sometimes seeming easier than Cathe's workouts, but they aren't. Ripped to the Core is especially sneaky: the compound movements are, I think, a distraction for the body and mind, making you believe you're not working as hard as you are by 'spreading around the effort' to many muscle groups.

I'd say, aside from the first workout, which is less intense, they are all a good buy. I have all 4 so far, and have the 5th on pre-order from Amazon.

My favorite Jari workout is RTTC. I feel like I have had a weight and aerobic workout all in one hour. When I first did the original Ripped I was a little let down, but I find myself incorporating it with her other 3 DVD's. I do the back work and tricep work in the original and one of her other three and find I can get great workout. (Did that may any sense?) I guess I just like more back and tricep work.

I felt the SAME way upon preview!

I've been looking at her stuff from Collage Video for a few months debating if I should get it, and it sounds like a lot of you like her. My question is, out of all her videos which would you recommend getting? I'm looking for more of a workout that will help tone and strengthen my muscles versus a full-on cardio workout. Any suggestions?

Lisa

I just completed ripped to the core for the first time and this workout will fool you. It was much harder than I thought it would be. I had to go down on all the wts since it was high rep. I was shaking and ready to eat by the end of it. Of course that was also after running 5 miles before doing the workout. I want to wait and here what people think of ripped and chiseled before I buy it. I got mine at deepdiscount.com for 8.13 a peice.
