I've been officially accepted!

...............to nursing school.....and freaking out already!!

Didn't expect it so soon, really..........classes start July, part time program. I put that as my first choice. It is extended past traditional semester boundaries and is only on Fri and Sat. I thought that would give me more time for the rest of my life (work, maybe?) and more time to study. It says that the lecture and clinical is compressed, but I don't know how that can be since you go to school year round for two years. I thought it would be less intense than the traditional four semester ADN program.

To muddy the waters, in a few weeks I am meeting with ASU advisors for the BSN program at ASU as well as the Clinical Laboratory Science program. I am still undecided on all this!! I hope I find my way soon! Part of me would really like a bachelors, since after this earning my ADN I will have TWO associate degrees, no bachelors. I suppose I am going to accept the spot and then figure out Plan B if I want out. Wish I knew where to go from here. Laboratory Science sounds sooo interesting, but nursing seems much more logical. I need to figure out what I really want...... Either way, hubby and I have pretty much decided that I will be quitting my job in July to give this a chance. If I hate it, I can use the student aid to go to ASU to get my bachelors in microbiology or CLS. We both agree that if I do nothing, paralyzed by fear, I will never move forward towards what I really want in life. The time for action is NOW!!!

Anyway, it is an accomplishment for me, however undecided I am on it all. Maybe ICU?????:)

I think it is time for me to take a few classes in stress and time management, eh???:)

Anyway, thought I'd share and see if anyone has any words of wisdom to prepare me!!

Congrats Janice!!!!! HOT DAMN! that's exciting news! i wish you all the best with your decision and i am sure you'll make a great one!
Enjoy the ride!

HORRAY!!!!!!!! Janice

That girlfriend.................is fantastic news. I am really chuffed for you, and excited.

I cant take away your "nerves" but you certainly have my best best wishes in this decision

You have to stay in shape. My Grandmother started walking when she was 60. Today she is 97 and we don't know where the hell she is! - Ellen DeGeneres

Janice - Congratulations! You are right - the time for action is upon you! It's great to have the options you are now faced with! Great accomplishment! :) :)

Thank you guys for the Congrats! Many of you know it has been a pretty long journey for me to get this far so I think I deserve to be proud. Some of the people around me are not so happy, but I guess I just have to learn to deal with that and figure out what I really want to do. It is just hard to ignore those voices, you know?

Eventually, I will let you know my final decision. Looking thru the paper for PT employment ads tonite!:)

On an equally positive note, my HC are coming Monday! So.........I guess living in Az isn't so bad after all!!:) Now, if they will just motivate me.........

Janice- Expect a lot more homework and less lecture time. When I was in highschool I took summer courses at the college and they were only 2x a week. A lot more homework then there is in the fall/spring semestars. Less lecturing means there will be more that you'll have to figure out on your own! That will take more time and brain power.

Don't let ppl dictate your chioces on education. They are just jealous that they don't have the oportunity or wish they wouldn't have squandered the time they could have put to use! You should be proud of your achievments! I went through a lot to get as far as I did! I just wish my eyes wouldn't have gone caput on me! YOu'll do fine. Just don't over tax yourself. You want to enjoy education. That way you can look back and not think of how stressed out you were.

I live in AZ also! My HCs are on their way too! Just had to add that!

I just wanted to say "Congratulations!".

I've been told by my friends/cousins who are nurses that with a BSN (4 year degree), there was actually more paperwork and/or giving reports/speeches in front of class; whereas, the 2 year nursing program at the community college was more "hands-on" learning. And both programs will enable you to be a "RN". Just something to check into.

Once again, Congratulations.

Reese...Wow, you are gorgeous! Checkin' out your picturetrail!!:) Cute family, too!!! Love the "Reece Out". Thanks for the heads up!

If I do go the nursing route it is a toss up of sorts between the ADN and BSN. Yes, I have heard the same regarding the difference in the BSN and ADN programs. The only difference for me is that I ALREADY HAVE an AA degree and many of the classes that I took for that will transfer and be applied towards my BSN. The ADN will take 2 years. The BSN could take as little as 2.5 if you factor in all the classes I have already, so it would make little sense not to just go the extra half year for the BSN, you know? But, these are the things advisors are good at telling you!:)

Congratulations!!! If you have any questions or want more info on lab related stuff just PM me. Once again, congrats and much success and happiness in your career.

Congratulations!
I'm an RN (23 yrs. and counting) via a BSN program. If time isn't crucial for you to start working and you can afford the extra 1/2 yr. of study, I'd encourage you to go for the BSN now. Many ADN nurses wind up going back to school for their BSN, so if you can get it now and not have to juggle school w/ a nurse's schedule, it might be a smart move.
Clinical science is a great field as well (my husband is a PhD Chemist) and it's a very different life from that of a nurse. No holidays, a predictable work schedule for the most part.
That's one happy problem you have to figure out. Good luck!

My 2 cents:

Follow the path that you find most interesting. If you don't, you might regret it later on. Following the "logical" choice makes sense, but if your heart is into doing something else, the logical choice will never make you the happiest you can be in your job. If I could go back and follow the more "interesting" path, I think I'd be a lot happier and more successful today. As such, I followed the more "logical" path and, while I'm good at what I do, I don't feel much passion for it...and often find myself wishing I'd done something different with me life.

Valerie...thanks for the advice on that. I think the BSN is a much more logical choice. It will depend on how long the wait is.

Catwoman....I am a catwoman too!:) I couldn't agree with you more about finding something you truly love. That is my intent, I just don't know what I truly LOVE so I am left to settle for what is just plain ol' interesting which unfortunately includes nursing AND lab careers! Nursing probably has too much people contact and lab work maybe too little. I am introvert but not that bad. More importantly, which field will allow me to feel knowlegeable, competent and truly important?

I really want to do an aptitude testing that Rockport Institute offers, but it is sooo expensive. I figured that if I can't figure out what I really love, maybe I can figure out then what I am truly good at, innately. I am probably just going to have to do that to figure out once and for all which way to go. I accepted the spot at my CC for the nursing program (I had to within 10 days). Now, when I back out, my app will drop out of the system, so I will have to start all over in the app process. So, whatever comes of this will be my final decision.

Thank you again everyone!

Hey there,
I recently graduated (in Dec.) with a BS in Clinical Laboratory Science. I think the basic coursework for CLS is more geared towards hospital laboratory work as opposed to research related laboratory work but its very adaptable. I started my college career as a bio major but as I continued to take my classes, I felt I wanted a more specific training in laboratory work because thats what I enjoyed most so I switched majors. The coursework for my program was pretty intense but I loved what I learned! I have no experience with nursing but if you enjoy the laboratory aspect of science then CLS would be great for you. If you have any q's, please feel free to email me!

If you decide on nursing, I definitely think you should take the BSN route if you can. I always feel its better to go ahead and get the bachelors to knock it out of the way because in many situations, it can open up more doors for you in the long run.

Just my 2 cents!

Janice ...
I am truely 100% happy for you... I congrates to you...
I hope your ready girl
The only reason I did not go for it on nursing is I decided I didn't want to give up all my free time to school and studying...
I am glad your ready for a full committment..... you go girl...
blessing to you..... Rhonda

Hi Janice
If contact w/ people is something you're not wild about, nursing would not be a good move. Not only does a nurse need a solid science background, she needs to have good interpersonal skills. It's different people ever day you're caring for, along with their families and visitors. Factor in the personalities of physicians, housekeepers, security and your fellow nurses and you're easily dealing w/ 15 people per day, minimum. If your people skills are something you'd like to get more comfortable with, I guarantee you no better training than work as a nurse. Good luck with whatever you decide is right for you.
