Help with highlights

I made a mistake and highlighted my medium brown hair. I did it at home with L'Oreal Frost & Design in caramel, it got good reviews but my hair lightened way to fast and I ended up with almost white highlights with a little bit of a green color.

So my question is how can I correct the highlights? I am thinking about coloring my entire head with permanent color. So should I pick something that is close to my natural hair color, or should I go a little darker that way the highlights take as much color as they can and will be dark enough to blend with the rest of my hair? I will probably do it myself, a colorist isn't in my budget right now.

Years ago, I had my highlights done at a school and I didn't like them so I covered them with a chocolate brown color, it worked and even got complements, but it's been a long time and can't remember which color I used.

Whatever you do, don't do anything right away. The hair needs some time. I would call the 800 number and also a local salon if you have one you use. I've had screwed up color before and was told to wait or I would make things worse.

If I were you ( I've been where you are now), I would go to a reputable salon to have the color corrected. You can make it worse. I wouldn't risk it at this point.
Do you have a friend or family member that can recommend a really good colorist?

I think it's L'Oreal that sells a highlighting fixing kit. It works just like a regular wand style highlighting kit, only it comes in a few different shades of dark blond/brown colors. I actually liked the look of the darker highlights on top of the light. It also has a toner wash to put on after to make it really blend well. It's not a bleach, but a color, so it won't be as harmful to your hair. Good luck.

I would do a temporary color. Those wash out in about 28 shampoos and are pretty mild. I would call the 800 number and ask for advise first, but I would think it would be safe. The advise about the high-light repair sounds good to me too although, I've never heard of that product.

Good luck.

Don't touch it!

I've been in your situation -- didn't like the color that I had (too blonde with an orange cast), so I tried to fix it and ended up with greenish hair! I went to a professional, who spent hours and hours trying to turn my hair back to a normal hair color (it wasn't my own color, but at least it was a legitimate hair color)!

I spent way more money and looked much worse than if I'd just paid to have it done. Fixing it yourself can make it worse and worse. Please consult a professional! Let us know how it turns out.

Good luck!

Hairdressers make a lot of money correcting the highlights of women that use home highlighting kits. I only do all over colour at home; highlights are for the experts!

My vote is with those who say go to a professional. I, too, have tried to self-correct a bad highlight job, and it only got worse and worse and worse...I know it's expensive, but maybe just an all-over color wouldn't cost as much as new highlights.
