exercising more and gaining weight

I heard about this website from a friend and I have recently joined. I am 30 years old and planning a wedding for early next year. I have always been a person who works out - lately it seems that since I have been working out more, I have actually gained weight :-( It is hard for me to understand because it seems like I have been trying even harder than usual (because of the wedding) and have seen negative results. I do not want to lose a huge amount of weight - maybe just 10 lbs. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help!! :)

I started incorporating a lot of weight lifting with my cardio this summer and noticed a 7 pound weight gain- agh! I've been really, really frustrated (I threw the scale away) because I want to see my weight start to go down. However, according to the tape measure, I've put on muscle. My clothes fit better, too!

Also, I've noticed that when I take rest weeks, I'll usually lose a few pounds-- I think someone mentioned that your muscles hold onto a lot of water when you're working out.

You might be over-training. There was a thread last week about that, and I believe that plateaus were a side effect. You could search the forums for info.

I agree with the above posters. What kind of workouts are you doing? Are you doing enough cardio to lose? Are you doing strength training? If so, you may notice a weight gain due to muscle gain which is a good thing.

Also like the above poster said, what do you eat? You may be eating too many or too few calories for your activity level.

Thanks for the reply... I am a teacher who, over the summer seems to lose my 'routine' in terms of everyday life (i.e. eating times, etc). Until yesterday, I was walking 4.5 miles approximately 4 days a week and doing step aerobics (w/ weights) 2-3 days a week (that will soon change to aerobics and maybe 1-2 walks per week). When I got on the scale, I was not expecting the number to be higher

As for eating...I do not eat red meat, pork, turkey, etc. I do, however, eat chicken, veggies, and fruits. Now that I am back to work, my eating schedule will be more precise so, hopefully, I will start to see some results soon. Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it :)

I have noticed that when i take a day off . The scale goes down too.
When I do a straight through hard week it stays up.
It could be water retention.
Everyone keeps telling me I have lost alot of weight.
I have noticed more muscle since I switched from the firm.
Clothes fit better. Still want to loose a fat layer.
Need to have my husband take a picture.
Compare from the beach.

If you can't buy a self test bodyfat caliper (Accumeasure), then do an "intuitive" check on your bodyfat by pinching your skin with your fingers in key areas (belly, thighs, arms, back). If you notice that you pinch less than a few weeks ago, then you probably have gained muscle tissue and lost fat. If you look yourself in the mirror and you have better proportions and a better shape, then don't mind the scale numbers.

If that is not the case, count calories if you are not counting them already. Clean eating is very important, but if you are in too much of a calorie surplus, you will gain fat.
