choc milk?

1. I went to a nutritionist a month ago and since I'm in my 20s, she wants me to get more calcium. Since I dislike yogurt and ice cream doesn't count :( , I turned to milk. I like choc milk, but was wondering if this is too high in calories?

I have Nesquick, which I know if meant for kids, but it's yummy and has added calcium and vitamins. Is choc milk ok or should I make myself just have plain milk?

2. I've read that milk drinkers actually lose weight or are thinner. I forget why, but I think it had to do with it being a filling "snack." Any info on this?

Thanks

Hi there,

I had an experience with milk though not to lose weight. It became a pregnancy craving around the 30 week stage, and I was drinking about 4-6 pints of milk per day (no joke!), and my appetite went completely, all I could face eating was a sandwich because I was so full of milk. Fortunately the craving went by about 36 weeks pregnant.
I know your are not pregnant, but my 2 cents is that I think it can fill you up, considerably, and it is good for you. It was a weird craving, because I only drink fat free milk in coffee or tea, and I have soya milk on my cereal, I am not really a milk fan.

hope this was of some help

anna

PS: I used to put Nesquick in my milk too !

Well, I love chocolate milk. I usually buy the premade type in the store, and they have low fat versions. I usually ge 2% for my kids and 1/2% for me. I love it. And at 32 I have very high bone density. Had it tested for free at my hospital where I work, and it was almost off the chart in the high range.
I usually only drink a cup or two a few times a week for a treat, cause I get plenty of milk from other sources.
Go for it! Anything that will help you build good bone density now can't be bad for you.

I love chocolate but I know that it is not healthy. I have read that there is an ingredient in chocolate that prevents calcium absortion. Then I wonder why milk chocolate is recommended. Also, chocolate has caffeine, which prevents iron from being absorbed (but milk is not a significant source of iron anyway).
Any nutritionist in the forum? I would like to know more about this.

Ok, well first of all, chocolate milk is going to have lots more calories. If you are looking for vitamins that have been "added", why don't you go for Carnation Instant Breakfast??

Also, I make these shakes made with skim milk, yogurt and cottage cheese and they are really very tasty..taste like a smoothie. Even poeple at work who do not like yogurt are liking them. They are very calcium dense. I am willing to bet also that you could blend some vanilla yogurt with your chocolate milk and you wouldn't even notice it. If you want the recipe for the shake it is in the thread here about "your favorite clean meal". Sorry, if I knew how to link I would!!

Also, yes, they have recently done studies that showed that poeple who regularly got 3-5 servings of dairy a day had lower body fat percentages and a higher lean mass than those who did not. Readers Digest just had an article on it as well as the Shape mag I just got done reading. So drink up!!!

I am not amilk fan, but like making my own chocolate milk. You can do this for very few calories by using cocoa powder--the unsweetened baking stuff (Hershey's or another brand).
Just put about 1-2 teaspoons in the bottom of a glass and add a little hot tap water to dissolve it (it will not dissolve in cold liquid).
Just stir a little & add skim/1% milk. I also add a packet of Nutrasweet or Splenda --you do need to sweeten it.

It sounds labor intensive, but it's really not. Works w/soy milk, too (which, by the way, Bernard, I love on cereal. Can't do cereal w/regular milk anymore).

This rocks

I am very careful about keeping my calcium intake around 1200 mg/day. But I DO NOT like milk (yogurt, cheese - fine). Here's something I came up with that I am absolutely hooked on - my own, very healthful version of chocolate milk: one cup of skim milk, mixed with 3-4 tablespoons of Ovaltine, PLUS the "secret" ingredient - dissolve a small amount of instant coffee in a very small amount of water - and mix this into the milk/Ovaltine. WONDERFUL!!

nutritionist...

She was looking over my food journal and noticed I had a lot of ice cream/frozen yogurt and said it doesn't really count as a good source of calcium.

She probably didn't want me to eat ice cream thinking it was ok since it has some calcium. There are better, lower fat/sugar sources of calcium out there. But I think it's better than eating a donut!
