Cat idiosyncrasies

We've discussed our dogs on this board and I wanted to hear about your cats. (Besides my dh is out of town this week and I'm bored.)

Our 11 yo cat's name is Sugar. She is short-haired with a pushed-in Himalayan face. Her pb Him mother was visited by an alley cat shortly after being brought home from being bred! Her strangest habit is to walk up and down the piano keys in the middle of the night when her food dish needs topping up. I say 'topping up' because there will be food there she just doesn't like to see the bottom of the bowl!

What does your cat do to endear her to you?

Trish

Weird. I was just thinking about starting a thread like this while I was feeding my cats this morning. Coincidence? I think not...

Anyway, we have 3 cats and they're all quite different from each other. There's T.C. (Teri's Cat), who is fat and not too bright. She's very sweet to the humans in her life, but a real b-word to one of the other cats. She doesn't seem to remember that she knows how to jump. We keep their food dishes up on a wooden tv tray table in the kitchen (so the dog won't eat their food) and T.C. needs to have a foot stool next to the table so she can get up. No wonder she's such a lard!

Purrple is our pretty lady (and the one who is the object of T.C.'s disdain). She's a beautiful semi-longhaired girl who may have some Russian Blue in her blood. This cat is very mellow and sweet. She's a loner when it comes to the other 2 cats and wants very little to do with them. But she loves her humans (especially me. I seem to be her "chosen one"). She isn't very idiosychratic, but she's my favorite because she is very low maintenance.

Kuzco is our baby. He was rescued by my coworker. Her neighbor drove home with him in his engine and didn't know it until he got home. Lucky the little guy didn't turn into sausage! He is also very sweet and doesn't seem to know how to turn of his purring machine. He climbs up on you when you're sleeping and purrs for hours! Keeps you awake at night. He also likes to torment poor Purrple. I always tell Purrple it's because they're jealous of her beauty.

All 3 are cold-blooded killers when it comes to the rodents outside and God help the poor mouse that dares to enter our home. None will eat their food if they can see the bottom of the dish. None will drink out of the water dishes that I put out for them, and will all drink from our dog's water. All like to climb up on the porch roof and sit at the bedroom window to let us know they want to come in. So they're all different, but the same.

I have 3 cats..

Dallas...he is the wild cat. Won't come in the house at all. My DH rescued him from the wild when he was abandoned. We brought him back to good health, but you usually can't take the wild out of cats.

RT is a big male cat. He looks like the Morris cat! A great disposition and the most friendly cat I have ever had. He runs down the driveway to meet you when you come home. RT is for Rail Trail, which is the trail I was running with friends when he found us. My sister decided I should take him. We found out his previous owner had passed away..:(

CC is for Carole's cat. She is a longish haired calico. She isn't the friendliest cat and runs and hides when we have company. Sweet though and the only cat I have ever had that lets you pet her belly without tearing your hand up!! In the morning when I get to my PC she jumps on my laps and sleeps for awhile....Carole

I have 4 cats.
Scooter is the oldest--14--and a diabetic, so he needs two shots a day. He had a health crisis over Christmas break and almost bit the dust (because of what was eventually--after several vet bills--determined to be rotten teeth that made it impossible to eat!), but now he's doing fine again. He used to love to play "toss" by bringing me plastic rings from the top of water jugs or Gatorade bottles and having me toss them. He doesn't do that much anymore, but I will sometimes find several plastic rings in bed with me--by my head--some mornings. He's a momma's boy and HAS to sleep with me. If I turn, he has to move himself so that he's right in my arms.
He's also my workout partner cat: he likes to wash my ears (deep-down clean!) when I do floor work.

Simon is about 5. I found him as a stray. He likes to chase his tail every once in a while. It's so funny when he tries to "sneak up" on it and pounce. Somehow, that things always knows he's coming

Bobsie is a 4 year old bobtail grey and white tortie. She likes to knead my tummy. Her favorite sport is soccer with a small superball. She bats it all around the kitchen, and sometimes I'll hear a "bump..bump..bump...bump...bump," which means that she's knocked it down the basement stairs. When she's stressed, she likes to lick plastic bags--she doesn't chew or try to eat them, she just seems comforted by the licking.

Mandy is the latest addition. About 6? She goes bonkers over shadows and lights, like lght reflecting off a mirror. She's not fond of the other cats, and will get up and leave when they join her on the couch, but I did catch her sleeping on the bed with all of them (two feet away) the other day. When I come home, she wants me to play with her by one of the cat towers, or wants me to go down the basement with her to play on an elevated carpeted area. I keep trying to get her to play with the other cats instead, but so far, she's only done a bit of "chasing".

My favorite cat was a himalyian (spelling, sorry) and she was so funny, She would never walk on the grass, she always walked on the sidewalk to get to the door, and when I worked she would always wait for me at the corner and the follow me home, I had people ask me if that was my cat and I said yes, and they were amazed at how she would do that. and when she would use the litter box she had to make sure her feet were clean before stepping out of it. Her favorite places to sleep was the bathroom sink and on top of the fish tank (till the lid fell and she fell in the tank). I miss her so much, she got old and passed away and have never found a cat to be just like her. If I could get another one I would but my oldest daughter is allergic to cats, If there is someone with allergies to cats and takes something to help please let me know because kids want a cat so bad.

I've got two cats.
One is named Gidget which all of you know how we aquired her. She's sweet, but doesn't like our dog, she's got him scared of her I think, he won't go within 5 feet of her. (If he does he gets hissed at and growled at.) She licks me when I'm sitting at my desk and puts her head on my keyboard so I can't type and will pet her. She also stays in the basement all the time, unless she's out of food, then she comes upstairs and meows until I go down there and feed her. She's very pretty, Calico, long fur.
Then there's Smokey, he's 6 months old and won't leave gidget alone. He wants to play soo badly, and she won't do it. So, he goes after our 86 pounds yellow lab! Smokey is soo funny and the nicest cat you'll ever come in contact with. He goes after our dogs tail, to get teh dog to give him attention. Then the dog pretty much just licks him until he's soaking wet. I think he secretly loves the dog. He doesn't have any front claws and flings himself at me if I'm within jumping distance so I'll hold him, and loves all the attention he can get. He's named smokey because he kind of lookes like a puff of smoke. He's mainly grey on his back, but has light grey stipes on his sides, and legs. But he's white underneath and has a grey nose, not pink. he's my baby.

My little Madison had a favorite toy, which was one of those heavy bases with a spring shooting up in the middle with a puff ball on the top. These toys are meant for the cat to be able to bat the ball around, so the base is really heavy. Well, Maddy decides that this is his carry around toy. It was the funniest thing, he holds the ball in his mouth and drags the bottom behind between his legs.
When my husband and I moved into our new house, we were asleep upstairs on a matress on the floor, and everything was still in boxes. We were not used to the silence of the suburbs, being that we just moved out of Manhattan. We're lying there, and suddenly we here a 'thump' on the stairs. Then another. Then another. Getting closer. It sounded exactly like someone slowly walking up the stairs toward us. We looked at each other like, do you hear this? Can this really be happening? Is that real? Finally it got so close we both grabbed something for protection, it was really scary at this point! Of course I'm sure you all can guess what it actually was.. Madison somehow found this toy in one of the boxes, dragged it out, and was pulling it upstairs! The base was so heavy it made a loud 'thump' as he dragged it up to the next step. Unbelievable!

My cat does summersaults (sp?). When I'm sitting on my couch, she'll walk up and rub against my leg until she reaches my foot, grab on, and flip herself over. Then she'll lay there for a second while I laugh and get up and do it all over again.

Her favorite game is hide and seek, she initiates the game all the time. She's so much fun...until about 4 a.m. when she wants to have food in the bowl just for comfort! I get up and feed her, she checks it out and then turns around and gets back in bed before I get there!

Ok I can chime in on this one, we have 2 cats who are different as night and day.

First there is Oakley, our beloved calico who was rescued on 9/11/01 from a golf course along with 2 of her brothers. She had a beautiful patchwork belly and lets the boys carry her around in any position when she would rather be all by herself. She is 3 and a Miss Priss and knows she is pretty. She is unique in that she has white freckles on her nose and white patches on her ears which the vet says is very unusual markings for a cat. She is pestered to no end by our male cat.

Which brings us to Shadow also a rescued kitty who almost got aborted. He is black, big and medium to long haired cat who I swear thinks he is a dog. He loves to have his belly rubbed and will come into a room and roll onto his back in order for you to rub his belly. He is very verbal, loves to play with our yellow lab. He is 2 and very playful but doesn't liked to be held but will tolerate it for a little while.

I haven't found my lap kitty yet but I am still looking,:7

Anybody's male cats constantly follow the female around sniffing their rear ends? Shadow does this constantly to Oakley and sometimes she turns around and whacks him one good to make him stop.LOL!!:7 :+

We have 2 kittens, Dusty and Fred. They are brother and sister and less than a year old. They sleep together, groom each other, chase each other, do just about everything together. Both are tabbies and rescued from the Humane Society when they were 12 weeks old.

Fred, the male (aka. Dickens) is more curious and apt to get into trouble. Right now, he has a fascination with our attic crawl space. Everytime my husband gets out the ladder to go into the attic, Fred gets excited. He can actually climb up/down the ladder and will stand under the attic entrance and meow after the ladder has been put away. Fred is my lap cat.

Dusty, the female is our little lady. She is quite content to sit back and watch Fred get into trouble. She is quite a bit smaller than her brother and purrs constantly. Dusty likes to sleep with us in bed at night.

Both cats sit on the couch and watch me as I workout in the morning. They know after my workout, they get fed wet food so everytime I pause the DVD player to take a sip of water or whatever, they get excited. Otherwise they just sleep on the couch and stare at me like I'm crazy for jumping around so early in the morning and exerting all that energy. "Wouldn't you rather be sleeping like me?" they seem to be thinking.

Hi , my cat just passed away on Dec 27th . He was 10 .Ummmm we really dont Know what happened he was just dead . It was soooo hard that day . Hi everyone! I have two five year old cats that I love the bejesus out of.

Rizzo is black short haired and chubby. She will never come out around people except for me & my husband, but when she is alone with us she is the sweetest cuddliest thing ever. She tries to do that thing where she lays down and rolls around to look cute but she isn't so graceful, so she just kind of falls on her side with a thud and starts purring. The cute things she does include headbutting me when I'm laying down and waking me up by sticking her nose in my ear and purring.

ChaCha is a skinny long haired black cat with the cutest little face you ever saw. She's full grown and only about 7 1/2 lbs. She's not as cuddly as Rizzo but she has her moments. We recently moved to a new house and she has taken over the computer room as her own room. Now we call it ChaCha's room. She doesn't want other people to touch her but whenever we have people over she's always got to be in the room and see what's going on.

Mary - I a really sorry to hear that. I know how hard it is. Before I had these two I had this crazy cat Vinnie who ate something poisonous and died suddenly. It was the saddest thing ever. Also, my Mom had a really cute cat that we all loved and he suddenly died one morning. She called me at work to tell me and I just started bawling, knowing everyone at work thought I was crazy for crying over a cat that wasn't even mine. I am really sorry for you loss.

Your cat may be a famous musician one of these days.
I am new to the world of cats. I have a tuxedo cat I received from my daughter three years ago and I almost returned her. Now, three years later, i am living in his house. He gives a high five (something which took me ahile to teach him)when he wants a snack.
He is having surgery this morning to remove a cyst or a mass. I felt so bad dropping him off. He is strange, but lovable.
He likes cereal and chips (fat free of course) And frosting...Okay, so I may snack, but I do exercise.

I have two Main Coone girls, Tasha & LeeLoo. I feed them after my workout so they get pretty excited when I go to the floor. Tasha licks the sweat off my arms and legs while I do abs and plays with my shorts' drawstrings when I do planks & pushups. She also knocks things off my nightstand until I get up to feed her in the morning. Don'tcha just love kitties?

My cat, Shadow, a grey short-hair has several cute habits:
-- She will NOT leave me alone when I'm on the phone. She must rub against me and/or eat the plants. She only does this when I'm on the phone.

-- She wants to bite your chin if you whistle. She cannot help herself.

-- She's not very graceful and will sometimes fall down or trip or run into something and then, I swear, she looks embarrassed. She looks at me like, "Hmmm...did you see that? Please tell me you didn't see that!"

-- She likes to lay on my tummy with her head on my chest and then put her arm/paw up around my neck (like she's hugging me).

-- If I don't get up in the morning to do my workouts, she knows and will start licking my head and face until I get up.

My sweetie is named Dupree but she answers to baby. She will be 18 next month. She does too many cute and interesting things to write here. She "mews" with a high pitched voice, sounding like a kitten. She like to hang out with me when I am doing abdominal work.:)

I love pet threads!

I've got two cats. A 12 year old all black male named Sidney and a 3 year old female tabby named Shelby (oops, my forum name is no longer a mystery). Shelby is a sweet, girlie-girl of a cat. She's got a little baby girl voice and if she were human, I know she'd be wearing pink bows and frills and play with girlie-girl dolls.

Sidney is definitely the alpha animal. It took him almost a year to get used to Shelby, but now they are great buds. Sidney is our miracle cat. He's had cancer twice (once at the age of five and again, in a different area, a year and a half ago). He's missing a toe due to cancer #2. I think Shelby keeps him young because he sometimes still acts like a silly kitten. He's biggest quirk is that he likes to lock himself inside of bedrooms and bathrooms. For some reason, he loves to slam the doors shut. Maybe because he knows we'll come running to let him out? He's pretty smart, though, other than the time he ate a branch of a fake Christmas tree. $1600 later and a long recovery, he's doing fine. I have one phrase to say about that situation...buy pet insurance (of course we didn't have it at the time, but we sure do now!).

I can't imagine a life without our furry friends.
Take Care,
Shelbygirl

Ok, I just had to post this because it's the best name ever! I ran into a lady at the grocery store the other day and we began to talk about cats. Her cats name is Mr. Snicklefritz! I love it! It makes me wish that I could get another cat just to name him Mr. Snicklefritz. It's just fun to say I guess, and it is soo a cats name. Could you ever emagine a dog named that? No, I couldn't, that's for sure.
I thought you all would get a kick out of that name.
