Bruises from Strength Training

Every time I lift heavy, I get bruises, especially on my legs. Does this happen to you? I once saw a doctor for this and all he said was: "All women bruise." ARRRGGGG!!!! He did prescribe a blood test and it turn out to be a slight iron deficiency. I guess I should get a blood test again because it is happening again. At first I thought: " I must have hit something and have forgotten." But, it happens only after heavy lifting. The other day I was resting at my bed and I swear I felt one forming in my leg! A few years back someone posted on this and some of you recommended vitamin C, which I know helps with iron absorption. I want to dig more into it. I know my father has iron absorption problems; it's a type of anemia or something. Maybe I inherited it. My question is: Is it really true that ALL WOMEN BRUISE? Does this happen to you?

I have never bruised from lifting weights that I can remember. Now, I have gotten them from walking into walls

Well, first of all - don't ever see THAT doctor again! What a dork! "All women bruise" Gee, what a brilliant medical explanation! That's code for "I have no idea what's wrong with you, but I don't want you to know that I don't know, so I'm going to make up some lame blanket statement to show you how impressive I am as a doctor."

Now, getting back to your problem. I don't think I have bruised from lifting weights, but then again, I am the kind of person who gets bruises and have no idea where they came from. LOL! I sometimes think I am iron defficient too (based on other symptoms). So that may very well be a factor. I also think that some people really do just bruise easily and for no apparent reason. But I wouldn't say all women bruise. Well, technically, all women do bruise if you whack 'em hard enough with a big stick. All men bruise that way too! But it seems like some people are just more susceptible to bruising than others. If it's really bugging you, go to a different doctor for more tests. :)

I agree with Emily, dont see that doctor again. It reminds of a doctor I saw when my knee was killing me. He said "If it hurts when you run, then don't run"
Anyway, I dont bruise when I lift weights. I have to hit myself pretty hard before I get a bruise. My son though does seem to bruise eaisly, so it could be a blood or skin thing.

Ummm yeah, I'm pretty sure all men bruise too. Duh.

I have bruises every time I get home from the gym. But I don't think it's from weightlifting. I think it's from running into stuff & not remembering. :p But they're usually on my calves & inside my knees, which I guess are my most "vulnerable" parts when I'm running around a crowded gym.

This is interesting (to hear about this from someone else)....I've noticed a couple of bruises on my thighs over the last few weeks, and while I do bruise fairly easily, I couldn't for the life of me remember running into anything or bumping my legs with anything. And they're kind of on areas of my leg that would be hard to run into something and bruise without noticing (not knees or shins or places like that). I have been doing heavy strength training during this time, and the thought did cross my mind that maybe it could be that.

If "all women bruise", how come I NEVER have? From weight training anyway. Whatever bruises I have come from bumping into things when I'm in a hurry, or being socked by my son when we're roughhousing. I hope you find another doctor and get a second opinion.
