Who wants to (re) read GWTW?

Shelley's post got us into an email discussion about the difference betw. the book & the movie. While I think the movie stayed relatively true to the book given the 3 hour time allotment, it left out some pretty major stuff about Scarlett & her not-so-ethical behavior.

I've read it 2X but it's been years, I'd love to read it again. Who's in?

I finished it in May!

Laura, so funny that you mention GWTW! I just finished reading it (for the first time) last May. Many differences from the movie, and of course the book is so long that they had to cut out entire story lines and characters.

Still, an interesting book and I only wish I had more time to read it (or anything, for that matter)!

OH! I LOVE this book. I just read it for the very first time this summer and LOVED IT! I barely stayed awake for the movie. lol I had to watch it over 2 nights.

Hey Laura - I might be in on that. I do need to finish Brisinger first. I have not read GWTW for ages ( and I have read it numerous times) I also have read some of the "sequels" authorized by the Mitchell estate. When I went to Atlanta for a seminar, I made sure I went to the Peach Tree street Museum. What a little place.

When did you want to start?

Hey Rhea--we're starting right after Tgiving b/c the movie is always run that w/e, so that gives us a nice opportunity for comparison. :)

I read the sequels too. I didn't much like "Scarlett," but I must admit I did like "Rhett Butler's People." I thought if you read it in a vaccuum--as in, trying to forget the original--it was a pretty good book.

Laura,

Sounds good and I can get Brisinger done before than (if I can get some time that is...maybe even the Rhett Butler one that I just picked up but haven't read!) I love the movie too. I'll have to pop it in the dvd player soon.

I'm in. Since I just moved to Atlanta, I guess I should start reading it. Have seen the movie plenty but never read the book. Before I moved here, I visited Margaret Mitchell's house and the GWTS museum. You're right, Rhea, a real small place.

Weird...over the summer, both my husband and I mentioned re-reading GWTW...never got to it, but I added it to my "read soon" pile! I may be in!

I don't even know how many times I have read GWTW - 10 or 15 at least! I discovered it when I was about 13 and would read to the end, then turn back to the beginning and start again! It's what I refer to as my "GWTW Phase" - I was so caught up in the romance, beautiful dresses, etc.! I even went to our local antebelleum historic house museum and volunteered as a tour guide so I could dress up in hoop skirts!

I read it again a couple of years ago, and of course now the racism comes through loud and clear. But it is still a great "read" - fascinating story and great writing.

The movie hasn't really held up over time though. The last time I saw it in movie theater (at least 20 years ago) people were laughing at how campy it is.

neither

haven't read the book or watched the movie. I'll see if I can find it at the library. I'm up for a good read. So I'll have to let you know if I can get it. Always wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

I love that book. Haven't read it in years! I am almost finished with the book I am reading now. Have you started reading it yet? Would love to join!

I just ordered it from Paperbackswap.com to give it a try. I have a ton of other stuff to read lately, so I don't know when I'll get to it.

No, we're not starting until 11/28. That way everyone has a chance to finish what they're reading now & actually get their hands on a copy of the book. :)

I can't believe I am going to say, "YES, I'm in!!!" (I have never read GWTW!) I always say I don't have time to read and it is hard these days but, I think this will be fun. Actually, I have read 1 1/2 books the past month which is saying a lot these days! Sooo, YES, Laura, I'm in!

Oh yay! Mama Deb is in!

Jeez, we'll have to do assignments or something so we all remain on the same page! (pun intended ;))

Hey all!

Just thought I'd bump this thread in case anyone wants to join us. I am cheating and starting the book earlier. I don't usually have time to read and since it is 1,037 pages LONG, I figured I best get going. I'll probably still end with you all! :D I am on page 73 and hooked! It is so good! Thanks for starting this Laura and I hope you don't mind that I didn't wait til Nov. (that is toooo long to wait! LOL!) HAPPY READING ALL!!!!!
