I'd seen stories on the TV once or twice about the Make It Right foundation over the last couple years, but when the documentaries commemorating the 5th anniversary of Katrina gave such a deeper profile of it, I became extremely impressed. I don't want to sound like I'm knocking the altruism of people sending donations to other countries when they are in dire need (I do this too), but my focus is coming back home.

I've joined Mike Holmes team to sponsor a home and have pledged a monthly contribution. It's not a lot, but every little bit helps, right?

Might be cool to get a Cathe Nation team started. Hmmmm....

City Harvest here in NYC. The restaurants here discard so much food every day. City Harvest buys trucks to pick up the excess and deliver it to those who need it most in the city. Such a simple and brilliant idea. It's my favorite charity.

Most of the money I give comes out of my paycheck, right now it's allocated to a local Cancer Care Org. I have also sent money to large scale disasters both home and abroad.

I like the idea of organizations that feed people, it seems like such a basic thing that no one anywhere, but especially in America, should ever have to struggle for. I have not done a monthly donation, but I have donated through American Idol for their causes to feed people who need it in the US the past couple of years.

That NYC Harvest program is actually genius, and yes very simple.
