What to use for my second workout per day?

Dear Cathe,

I have a six month old son whome I adore, the only problem is along with him came added inches that I can't seem to get rid of. I've been working out regularly for about 3 months now. I run 3-5 days per week & lift weights 3 days per week, (Gym Style workouts). I feel stronger & more fit but the weight loss has stopped. I'm wondering if I cut out the Gym Style workouts & start doing one of the cross training videos (Drill Max, Body Blast 2, or one of the High Step workouts) as my second workout per day, will this help me loose these last few inches? Also, would I need to work into these slowly to avoid injury do to the high impact in addition to my running or can I go straight into them in place of the Gym Style workouts? Thanks for your help.

Of course I am not Cathe, but I used to run 6 days a week for my cardio and recently changed things up and am running 3 x a week and doing other types of cardio....Cathe workouts, swimming, elliptical machine, bike as well as weights, and I think it has made a difference. With running you have a steady state heart rate. It is good to shock your body by mixing the type of workouts you do and to work different muscles in different ways and to vary your heart rate. I wouldn't stop doing the Gym Style workouts, but would try other Cathe cardio dvds as well as running.

Good luck!

Hi:

As you wait for Cathe to respond, I thought I'd chime in and add a suggestion.

Your weight training schedule sounds fine. Gym Styles is a tough series. If you have any other of Cathe's weight training series, you might want to switch to those for a bit, to keep the muscles guessing.

It sounds like you really enjoy running, but your body definitely needs a change, esp. if you have plateaued in your weight loss. Try going down to 3 runs a week, but vary your intensity and duration. Maybe one of the days do a shorter run w/ intervals either speed or incline. Then do one of the days as a moderate run, and then do a really long run as the other day. If you still want to fit in some cardio that week, perhaps a kickboxing or a stepworkout or even a fast paced walk on the other days. I think you will like what it does for you.
