I am 44 years old and would like to get your opinion if I should continue bleaching my hair blonde or go back to its natural color. My natural color is medium brown. My eyes are blue with light skin that burns easily.

I have been bleaching my hair for years and when I was younger, it really made a difference in my social life. However, now I am older and wondering if dying my hair blonde is still age appropriate. My sister and mother have both been blonde and went back to their natural colors.

Before I place a crucial vote I need some more facts.

Is your natural hair color accompanied by natural gray hairs?

If, so do you mean augmenting your natural color with the same colr dye?

Do you believe that blonds have more fun? :)

I don't think age plays a part in it at all. It's what you feel comfortable with. If you very much prefer the blonde then stay with it...

Hmmm...this sounds like a question for Trinny and Susannah. :) :)

I agree that it probably doesn't matter so much about what's correct for an "age", but maybe about what would work best with your skin tone, eye color, etc. Have you consulted a stylist about this? Maybe there's a middle ground.

I'm struggling with this too. There's no way I can go to my "natural colour" since it's quite hideous and rife with grey, and not the attractive kind of grey. The mousy, ugly, frizzy kind of grey. But I think my hair is too light, so I've decided to go a bit darker and get some light highlights. That could be an option for you:)

Well, I have been every color on the map, including platinum blonde. My hair is naturally a light brown... looking back at pics during the varying stages of my blonde phase, the only description I can find for myself is WASHED OUT. I don't think most women realize how harsh blonde is on the face, particulary as we age. (I work with several women who are blonde and really need to think about something else; it just looks brittle.) Eventually I ended up going brown with auburn, which looks awesome and very natural with my coloring if I do say so myself. ;-)

There's lots of options out there, so why not experiment?? It's really best to use a colorist if you can, though....

Good luck!

Well, I am almost 46 and have been lightening my hair since May, I had to do my roots about every 6 weeks, I like and hubby likes it, and I don't care what anyone else thinks on age appropriate...

I WOULDN'T MAKE THE DECISION BASED ON YOUR AGE. I WOULD GO WITH WHAT YOU LIKE THE BEST. AND BY THE WAY I DON'T THINK 44 IS TOO OLD TO BE COLORING YOUR HAIR. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!

Go with what makes you feel most attractive. I personally think if you can look good w/ blonde hair, go for it. I can't, I need either brunette or red tones or I look "washed out. But why not try light brown w/ honey highlights. Highlights can look so beautiful and sophisticated, plus less worry about roots. Besides, you can always change your mind and go back to blonde again. Change is good! Keeps things from getting boring or stale. HTH /karen

I think that bleach blonde hair makes people of a certain age look older. The same thing with really long hair -- IMO, it ages you.

Some have said go back to your natural color with highlights. That's a good idea or you could just go to a darker blonde... Just my 2 cents...

I think you should go with whatever color you prefer. But harsh colors (too light a blond, too dark a brown) tend to look not as good as we get older, so I'd stick with a middle tone).

Hard to say without seeing you but think maybe somewhere inbetween. EIther a dark blande or lt golden brown. Preference makes a Lightest Golden Brown. You can always go darker but going from lt blonde to med brown might be too much of a shock. Ask you hair stylist what color she thinks would be flattering to your skin tone and eye color. What I had heard in the past was to go one shade lighter when you are older although I don't think of 44 as old. I use a Lt Golden Brown and it is very close to what my natural was (I think). :) I wouldn't go darker because it would wash me out but tried ligher and my hair picks up the red highlights. My hair color is a little darker than my eyebrows.

Your coloring sounds a lot like mine. I've been graying since high school and just in the last two years found a color that looks so fantastic and natural that no one has a clue that I color. If you're interested in the mixture, I'm sure I could ask my hairdresser. I'm pretty much a medium brown with auburn hints throughout. I don't know how he mixes it other than to say he mixes brown and red together to get what I am. In the summer he gives me a couple of subtle highlights around the face and then we just let them fade/grow out. This has worked so well for me...unfortunately, I do have to go back every 5/6 weeks!

I'm 46 years old and I too was always bleaching my hair blonde. I just needed a change, and for me I thought it made be look older and more harsh. I colored mine back to my natural color which is like yours med. brown. and added lots of blonde highlights. I love it!! I wish I would have done it sooner. Let us know what you decide. The important thing is you do what makes you feel the best. Good Luck Lori BC
