What a klutz I am!

So I was doing Circuit Max yesterday afternoon. I was really psyched because THIS was going to be the week I got back into six workouts per week, no excuses anymore.

And not 15 minutes into the workout, I fell on my a$$ because I twisted my ankle while doing those side-kicky things!

Then foolishly, the hero in me walked it off for about two minutes and finished the workout rather than stopping. "I'm NOT going to be fat forever," I said out loud.

Well, I'm RICE-ing my Sunday away now.

How long does it take a sprained ankle to heal? Do you have to see a doctor?

I suppose I can still do core workouts, as long as it's just situps and stuff...

Thanks for reading my post!

I don't know much about a sprained ankle, but I thought I'd add if you can do core work can you get some upper body work outs in as well? I know when I had an injury not long ago. I took two weeks off from cardio and did upper body only.

Hope your ankle heals speedy fast! It's the worst not to be able to work out the way you want to w/o.

My upper body is quick to respond to workouts muscle-wise - I guess I'm "lucky" that way. It's the cardio that really takes care of the fat, right?

But I will probably do a couple upper body workouts as well. Do you think it matters if you do the work standing or sitting? I know in a lot of the workouts Cathe does biceps and shoulders (and sometimes triceps) standing up, but you could do the same things sitting, right?

Thanks for the tips!

Oh yeah, you probably don't want to put a lot of pressure on your foot. Maybe you should see a doctor. Maybe he could give you some ideas to modify, etc.? Do you have a stability ball? What if you did the upper body exercises on the ball? I don't have it yet, but have seen it on Fit TV. SS/PP, I believe, weight work is done on the ball.

Good luck.

edited to say: I did a google search and found this for you.

HTH!:)

A sprained ankle doesn't need a doctor. It needs to be wrapped in cold, wet bandages. When they dry, re-wet them and repeat. The bandage will support the ankle and the cold will bring out the bruising. Your ankle will go purple or maybe straight to a yellowish colour. That means it is healing!

Avoid cardio for at least a week. You can't do cardio until you can walk normally on both feet, with equal weight on each and until you have full range of movement back in the joint. Usually for me this takes between 1 and 2 weeks. After about a week, when you can put weight on it again, I would resume leg weight training before trusting the ankle with cardio.

When you start back, give CMax a miss for a while!

Happy healing!

Ha-ha, Clare! Yep, CMax has been sent to the back of the cabinet for awhile. I was so surprised because because first, I'm pretty coordinated and secondly, if any workout was going to lay be flat out on my back, I was sure IMAX3 was going to be the one!!

Thanks for the advice - I have been doing the RICE thing all day like you said - Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Also, it's good to have a timeline for when I can get back to leg workouts and then cardio.

My ankle already feel a lot better than it did yesterday, so I don't think I did too much damage.

Hopefully I can get a jump start on my core work in the meantime!:) (Well, maybe "jump" was a bad choice of words ;))

Thanks again!

My only advice is to be certain you allow it to heal completely because those derned ankle sprains can plague you if not given time to recover properly. We klutzes should start a club! I have scars from my days as a runner. :D

I am so sorry to hear about your ankle! Would you believe I did almost the exact same thing last Monday! I was doing HSC, and during a cardio part, I stumbled, rolled my ankle and feel on my A$$ as well. I also sprained my ankle. It was all puffy for about 2 days! I did not go to the doctor. Keep doing what you're doing--ice, compression bandage along with rest and elevation. I started to notice the bruising after a few days. As for the bruise on my behind (where I landed on a dumbbell!), it's all sorts of pretty colors and about the size of a CD!

I am planning on doing upper body/abs this week as well as some time on the exercise bike but rested it last week. I am hoping to add walking later this week or next...but should I maybe do leg weight work before walking? Any other good advice for us klutzes out there?

Hang in there, Thea

Oh, Thea! I'm so sorry to hear you fell on a dumbell as well! Egads!

I hope you weren't foolish like me and had the good sense to stop. I'm not sure why I felt I had to be a hero. I'm regretting it now!

I hope you are on the road to recovery as well. I was thinking leg work without any impact would be better than walking or cardio, but we'll have to wait to hear from the educated crowd on that one.

Hmmm, well...I did try to "walk it off" and I admit tried to continue my workout a little bit but quickly found I had to stop. Luckily, I was about 3/4 of the way done when it happened!

I think you may be right about leg work w/out impact from cardio. Let's hope we hear more!

Get well soon!
