weird milk question

This is going to sound crazy, but I think I may drink too much milk. I usually drink about 1 gallon of skim milk within a day or two. I can drink 4 huge glasses at any time during the day. I actually crave milk in the middle of the night and slug huge gulps right out of the container.
I tried weight watchers once, but my milk consumption was using up all my points. Does anyone else have this "problem" ? I know this is a weird thread, but just curious.
Thanks,
lizzy

I drink alot of milk too, but to say 1 gallon a day??

It is fine that you like milk. I crave it and won't eat certain foods without it...for example peanut butter or chocalate cookies. But, you need to curb your consumption somewhat if you are drinking a gallon per day. A gallon every two days is even big. Do you realize that there are 16 servings of milk in one gallon. Each serving has approx 90 calories. That means, every day, you are getting approximately 800 calories PER DAY from milk alone. Now, unless you are cutting calories elsewhere (which wouldn't be so healthy anyway), you are consuming too many calories from milk. Too much of anything is not good, unless maybe we are talking vegetables. But too much of any ONE TYPE of thing is never good. With all those calories, you could be eating a much wider variety of things. Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in milk, but yeah, you are drinking too much.

It is unusual to "crave" it in the middle of the night. Are you lacking protein or possibly diabetic?? I always suspect something when people say that they are actually awakened in the night for the sole purpose to eat. Unless you are thirsty and are just needing liquids.

Just my honest opinion.....

I agree with Janice. I think you are drinking way to much milk. Beverages are the KILLERS of any kind of weight loss program, of course if you are drinking no calorie beverages or water, then there is no problem. Just remember that liquid is not as filling or nutrient as good food, so try to get calories from healthy food rather than milk. That much milk equals two meals.

You aren't pregnant or have a calcium deficient?

Just some things to consider...I quit my regular coffee at Dunkin Donuts and it was hard but now I could care less. I'm fine without the cream and tons of sugar...I wish I could give up french fries this easy!!! :)

This may sound funny, but I hate milk. I buy a half gallon of skim milk and it goes bad before I finish it. But I am not big on drinking anyway. I have to make myself drink water before a workout and I also forget to drink, especially when I am at work.

Wow! If you drink a gallon of milk in a day that adds up to 1440 calories! Even if consumed every other day that is alot of caloires from milk. I love milk, drink it as often as I like but those milk mustache commercials that tout it as a health food to be consumed three time a day are not quite all they are cracked up to be! For one thing there is no calcium crisis in America. There is evidence to suggest that too much calcium may increase the risk of prostate cancer for men and ovarian cancer for women. In the Nurses' Health Study, woman who drank two or more glasses of milk per day were at least as likely to break a hip or forearm as those who drank less than that per week. Moderation is the key to good health. I would cut back on milk consumption if I were you! Too much of a good thing is no good at all and milk, while very comforting and delicious to some of us, isn't as great as the Dairy Council lets on. I've heard that the milk moustache is mostly marketing too, and that too much milk is bad, and that eating more calcium does not prevent osteoporosis. The way I had it explained to me, it's like thinking eating more protein will make you gain muscle. Not without exercise. In the same way, eating more calcium only makes you build denser bone if you do more exercise.
I've also read explanations that if you eat too much animal protein, it makes your blood acidic and your body needs to use the calcium from your bones to bring the acidity back down, so it actually causes osteoporosis.

All this being said, I've never read much on the issue that didn't have an axe to grind one way or the other. Either the dairy industry is pushing its products, or the health faddists, animal rights people, and ethical vegetarians are trying to convince you of their philosophy. I'm not really sure what the absolute scientific truth is here, and I'm not sure it's really known.

Lastly, a gallon of milk is too much milk in a day or in two days. Too many calories, unless that's about all you consume. I can't offer any idea as to what the craving is all about. It might be protein, not calcium. I hope you get some more ideas from the forum or the internet.

Maybe the people who drink lots of milk or take lots of calcium supplements aren't getting the other things (Vit. D, magnesium, etc.) that the body needs in addition to exercise in order to absorb calcium and prevent osteoporosis.
My husband drinks a quart or two a day. At least it's skim. I hope it doesn't cause prostrate problems down the road. Do you know where I could read more about this?
