Weights in Cathe's Workouts

Okay, so I'm pretty new to the whole strength training thing and I can't come close to matching Cathe on the weight she uses for most exercise.

My question is, do you match her weight? If you do, how long did it take you to get to that point? And how do you know when it's time to go a bit heavier?

I've been doing Cathe for a couple of years and it didn't take too long--maybe 6 mos. to match her weights--for most things. Sometimes I go higher, but I'm kind of afraid to lift more than 45lbs. on a barbell over my head! Once you feel like you could do more reps at the weight you are at, add some weight. the recommendation, if I remember right, is 10%.

I've been doing Cathe since about last June and I can now match her in everything except maybe biceps! I didn't think I'd ever get there but I just gradually started upping and that gave me the courage to try it with more of her workouts. Suddenly it was like -WOW- I just did it!!!:+

It took me only a couple of months to be able to match Cathe's weight. With some exercises I do go lighter, like dumbbell flies in HCGSC&T and some I go heavier, like dumbbell rear delt raises. I started way back when MIS came out though. It takes time to add strength.

I wanna know how can you all tell what she has in her hands for dumbells when TV will distort the image?

I don't try to match her? Why? I don't feel the need to compete with her. She's been doing this for a long time.

I believe in you do what you can do and you go up in weight when you start swinging them to easy.

I'm building my own Rome.

I match Cathe on some weights (lower body, biceps, shoulders), exceed what she uses on some (back, bench presses), and use less than her on some (flyes, some triceps). I've used Cathe's weight workouts from the beginning (and couldn't match, let alone exceed, her weights back then), so I pretty much know that if she uses such-and-such a weight for body part X, I will do best with one that is (the same/heavier/lighter). (Like in GS Back/shoulders/biceps, when she grabs just 8# for the partial reps, or when she grabs 15# --I think--for bicep work in PH, I KNOW I should go lighter than usual!)

As for when to go up: the last 2 reps of a set should always be somewhat difficult, but still possible to do with good form. Once those reps become easy, it's time to move up in weight. (With regular gym weight training, you set a range of reps, say 8-10, start with a weight that allows you to do the lower end of the range, then go up in weight when you can do the upper range of the reps--some recommend to up weights when you can do the upper range of the reps with your current weight for two workouts in a row).

Oh shoulders...I can't match on shoulders. I'm very weak in that area still.

I don't look at it as trying to compete with Cathe when I try to match her, I just look at it as my personal accomplishment:)

I'm not asking because I want to compete with her. But I'd like to set a goal that is attainable and that goal would be to be able to lift what she lifts.

Good question! I have been working out with Cathe for almost 2 years. I usually use the same weights that Cathe does. I can lift 50 lbs. over my head when I do squats, but no more than that, at least for now. I am working on trying to use 8lbs on the flyes for the shoulder work...not quite there yet (Iamafitnessfreak/Sarah is trying to encourage me). Bi's and Lower Body I can go abit higher in weight, but just a few more pounds, nothing drastic yet. I have a hard time with Supersets when Cathe does the benchpress with 40lbs. I usually do 35lbs. My son is already up to 50 and he is 14! WOW! NOT FAIR!!!!

I can match Cathe on many exercises and go heavier on some. It took me about 8 months to get up to her level, and now I think I've gone to the maximum that my body can do. I'm not the athletic type and getting to where I am now has been almost like a shot in the dark.

I up my weights when I can do 3 sets of 12 and don't grunt and puff my way through.

I don't know if someone said this already, but I will up my weights after about 2 or 3 weeks, and then if I can't handle it I go back down either for the next set or to finish the set. Eventually I work up to being able to do that new weight for the entire set or sets. I can't say for sure, but I think it might take a week or two, depending on how often you work a body part and what body part it is, to get used to the new weight. I never sacrifice form for higher weight though.
I'm like most of you, I can do the same weight as her on some exercises, on others I can go up or have to go down. I just do what I can handle and go from there. I must admit though, it does make me happy when I can use a higher weight than Cathe does, even though I'm not competing with her. It makes me feel like I've progressed and what I'm doing is worthwhile, and that feels good.

I have just had the most delightful experience. I didn't work out in the fall due to depression. I started back in limp fashion in the New year. I have just completed a 5 week S&H rotation, using Gym Style legs for leg work, with just 2 or 3 cardios per week, and I am now matching or exceeding Cathe's weights on the S&H and Gym STyles (apart from military presses where I can only do 2 sets with 15 pounders. Damn!). I am amazed at what I can now lift. I made progress throughout the 5 weeks of S&H, and was lifting much heavier in the last 2 weeks than in the first 3, and now I am using weights I never thought I'd be able to touch. I am soooooooo happy.

So, if you are plateaued, S&H is your answer.

It is now the core secret of my fitness program. I will rotate it back in every 4-5 weeks to keep striving for greater fitness.

I turn 40 in 2 months and have never been stronger in my life.

(I started working weights with Cathe about 3 years ago, but due to my depression I have always been hit and miss with my fitness program, so...it has not been a consistent progress.)

I have been exercising for 15 plus years, but just started doing Cathe 2 months ago. I was only lifting light weights at the time and doing circuit style workouts, however, I had lifted heavier in the past. I started doing Cathe's workouts at about half of what she lifted and slowly have increased as I feel I can with proper form, etc. I just now, 2 months later, have started to match her weight in most exercises, but they are a handful that I'm only lifting about 1/2-1/3rd of what she does. I'm not trying to compete with Cathe, but I am competing with myself to be the best that I can be and I defintely want to build some upper body muscle on my scrawny upper body, so I try to lift as heavy as possible with proper form. If I start too heavy, I simply drop that weight and pick up something lighter to finish the set....point being....challenge yourself! Have fun and don't feel any pressure. Do the best you can for that day...period. It's much better to be safe than injure yourself.

I match most of the time now, and actually add a little on some things (legs mostly). I use 55-60 lbs. when doing squats, but it makes me a bit nervous getting the bar over my head. Sometimes it seems as though I'm JUST clearing my skull.

It took me a good 8 months. It depends on the workout too. I can match on the Pure Strength and S&H series, but not on the endurance ones. I've got to work on that a little.

Shelly, What or who is Lime Cat? Is it in a cartoon or animation?

I don't have small children so I don't know what's hot and what's not in the animation industry.

Lime Cat is just Lime Cat. It's not from a show or anything. And not "hot" as far as I know. Just a picture someone took that ended up on the Internet and became kind of famous:)

I don't come close to matching Cathe's weight on lower body...Prego or not! Upper body I can come closer at times but I can't push myself too hard right now.

Once the baby is born and I am back up to par with exercising I definately am making it one of my goals to work my way up to matching Cathe in weight on EVERYTHING I possibly can!:D

Have a great work out!

I match Cathe's weights on all her workouts and do a little heavier on some. I was pretty much matching her weight after only doing her workouts a couple times, but I was also lifting weights prior to starting Cathe. However, I am having a heck of a time going up in weight lately. I'm not sure why. I'm trying to push through some of this plateau the next couple weeks.
