How about coming out with a step mat? One that fits just on the top of the club step so we can use it when we use the step as a bench. I have an old one I got from Karen Voight, and I use it anytime I have to lie on the step (how can you guys NOT put something down? I find it very uncomfortable to not use a mat), but it's rather rough around the edges, and I need a new one.

Not a bad idea, but the reason I don't put anything down, since you asked, is that the whole surface of my body that touches the step is covered in cloth. I always wear a T-whirt overy my sports bra to absorb all the sweat. So, my shorts and Tshirt prevent me from actually contacting the step.

Also, I only use my workout shoes indoors, so they are pretty clean. And lastly, I take a shower right after my workout, thereby removing any vile molecules that may have breached my defenses.

I know what you mean Kathryn. I use my yoga mat for this as I find it uncomfortable too. It works pretty well, I just double it up.

Hi Kathryn! I have always wanted to do this but right now it is just a back burner idea since so many other priorities are in the line up.

How about a towel? Just lay a bath towel or a gym towel down on the step. I have one I use exclusively for this purpose. The upside to it as well, is that it absorbs your sweat, which a mat won't do and you can throw it in the laundry which you also can not do with a mat.

i use a towel on the step when i use it as a bench!

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

A towel is not enough for me. I have very sensitive skin ("Princess and the Pea"-like!). I would buy another step mat before this one wears out.

Just curious, if a towel is too sensitive.. how do you dry off from the shower? .... wash cloth??? just a hummm thought.:(

I believe Kathryn is talking about padding. A towel doesn't provide enough padding not the fabric of the towel. I could be wrong. I'm sure she'll clarify, but the mat that Karen Voight sells has some thickness to it, I believe.

cjaymax is right. It's not that the towel is too rough. The towel does not provide enough padding so that I don't feel the ridges on the top of the step platform when sitting or lying down. (Hence the Princess and the Pea analogy.)

Kathryn, could you cut down a yoga sticky mat? They're usually pretty soft and would cushion your back better than a towel...

ETA: sorry, didn't see Nancy's post with this idea

Allison;)

I have the same problem as Kathryn. I end up with long red marks on my shoulder blades and sometimes they are scabs. I can't wear low back tops b/c of this problem and with all the hard work I put into looking good I want to be able to show off those back muscles!
I did get a smaller mat but it is too wide and too thin! It bugs my elbows when I do chest/tricep work. I'm not trying to whine or complain. Just saying that other ppl have noticed this! lol. Cathe fans would deffinately buy a product that solved this problem.

Mine is always really cold. Brrrrr!!!! I hate laying down on it. Of course, I keep it out on the front porch when it's not in use and it hasn't been over 35 degrees in months.

Karen Voight's mat is still available on her website, I recently bought it and it works well. It is the stiff, foamy kind of material, so it holds its shape.

You know, it's really not the rough mat part that bothers me - it's the size of the sweat mark my a$$ leaves when I get up that's so shocking - LOL!

I use a towel because if I think about where my shoes have been before I did my step workout. I wouldn't want that stuck to my sweaty wet skin. EEWWW. So, I use a towel. It's funny because I leave an inprint of me when I get up. It's kinda humourous.
