using a barbell

I am getting to the point where I need to start using more weights on my legs. It is very uncomfortable for me to hold a barbell on my shoulders. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, or what the deal is. Any ideas or pointers?
Thanks for you help!

how much do you use? I only use dumbbells because I have rotator cuff disorder and placing the barbell over my head is risky for me.

Can you hold two 20s or 25s?

You can use a barbell pad or roll that slips on the bar. That will give you a little more cushioning.

Of course, there will be the point where your legs could handle more weight, but you don't have the upper body strength to get that weight up to your shoulders. Then you may have to settle for more reps with your current weight or invest in a squat rack -- I'm actually thinking about buying one of these myself -- just where will I find room for it?? ;)

I have one of the old Firm aerobic bar bells where the entire bar (between the plates) is padded. It's great for resting on the shoulders!

I'm uncomfortable with the BB behind my head, too. When I worked out with a personal trainer at a gym, she had me use a weighted vest for squats, lunges, step ups, etc., and I'm thinking about getting one for home. Right now I just use DB's.
