update me on the best new workout DVDs

emy

Cathlete
Okay, I haven't been working out much in the past year to year and a half. So, you all need to fill me in on the best workout DVDs that have come out during that time. Think back a little bit too, because it really has been A WHILE since I've been around here! (I am looking over at collage and just have no idea what to pick!)

Thanks!

emy

Forgot to add, I WAS an advanced level exerciser, hoping to get back to that level quickly (but will probably need intermediate level suggestions too). The only thing I'm not super keen on is kickboxing. Other than that, please list your favorite workouts!

Emy,

Do you have Cathe 4DS? I dont have it. But I still recommend it as something to consider. It will help get back into advanced fitness as it can be broken up into intense but short workouts. It does have one 30 min Kick Box included, though.

My favorites in the past year or so:

a. Cardio Coach - If you like machine cardio (treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster, stationary bike, spinning), I rate Cardio Coach as must-try. People also use it for rebounding or running/walking outdoors. It is audio only. You can play it by CD or take it with you on your iPod or mp3 player to the gym. Cardio Coach has 8 volumes of interval training coaching by the wonderful Sean O Malley. The music is sensational. The workouts are versatile because you can use them at a relatively low fitness level and continue to use them as your fitness improves. I developed my speed and cardio endurance using these workouts and I cannot say enough about how wonderful they are. I lose myself in Cardio Coach Land and before I know it I have completed a superb, sweaty workout.

b. iTrain - iTrain also has audio only workouts. They have specifc workouts for treadmill, outdoor walking, cycyling, swimming, elliptical, yoga, ballet-type work and strength training. They have fun workouts that altrnate 5 min intervals on a cardio machine with weight work. I like their interval and cardio workouts best.

c. Tracey Staehle Walking Strong - This is one of my favorite video workouts in recent times. If you have access to a treadmill, Walking Strong is a one hour cadrio workout which is tough even though it is all-low imact. You walk, do walking lunges, walk with weights and walk up inclines - all on a treadmill. The cast seem like they are having a wonderful time and there is nice banter between them as they workout. That never fails to get me caught up in the mood.

All my recommendations so far have been machine cardio, because since Cardio Coach, I have turned into a machine cardio fiend. I no longer enjoy hi-lo or step.

My other favorites:

Kelly Coffey Meyer - 30 Minutes to Fitness Weights. I suggest this because you can do it as a two day split of weight training (each session is 30 minutes) or use one of the several premixes including total body options. So it will have room to grow as you get back to your old fitness levels. You can also do both 30 min workouts back to back for a one hour total body workout. Kelly does not waste a second. Between sets you have one minute active-rest. There are multiple active-rest options - low-impact, floor abs, standing abs. Kelly's standing ab work is really good. I also like her Cardio Kick Step Boxing (I make an excepton for Kelly when it comes to Step) and NYC (New You Coming - A high-rep, low weight workout). Kelly is considered advanced.

Tracey Staehle - Circuit Zone. I love the lower body premix on this DVD. Her Core Blast is one of my favs too. It is not killer tough, so it may be a good choice for working your way It can be broken down into short workouts based on the time you have to work your abs. It has standing, floor, step, stability ball segments.

Patrick G, Mindy have both had recent releases which were popular. I enjoy Patrick's Hard Work Conditioning and have my eye on Hard Work Conditioning 2. Both are cardio-weight circuit workouts. Patricks weight work is functional fitness oriented.

Another person to check out is Amy Bento. I dont like choreographed cardio anymore, but she is immensely popular with those who do. She has a great personality, uses good music and is innovative. She is considered one of the best choices for advanced hi/lo. Her step workouts ar very popular too for those who like challenging choreography. I like her Slo-Mo Challenge and Rumble (which may not be something you care for since it is Kick Box). Her other Kick Box are more hi/lo than Kick Box drills, so you should look at the clips even if you dont like Kick Box.

Kelly has a presale for two new workouts - 30 min to Fitness Kickbox and 30 Minutes to Fitness Bootcamp. The presale ends tomorrow. The clip of the bootcamp is available at her forum. There is a thread here that talks about the workout and reactions to the clip. The bootcamp could be something to consider. The dvd has two 30 minute workouts and a one hour option, plus premixes. It is expected to ship by the 2nd week of Dec.

The coolest folk ;) are into kettlebell workouts. I dont have access to kettlebells in India, or I would be swinging away too. I have tried kettlebell exercises with dumbbells and they feel like a whole different way to workout. Fun and challenging. I am waiting for k-bells to make their way to my part of the world.

Try tying two dumbbells plates together with a towel belt and swing with it. I did that for a month before I got my kettlebells. Of course you cant do many of the other kettlebell programmes but you can do lots of swings with it. If i can download a pic of it, will post it here for you.

Thanks Shelly. I will try googling to see how that is done too. I can do a near enough approximation of many kettlebell exercises with a dumbbell (I learned from cross fit videos on youtube!) except I cant let go in the air from hand to hand.

Someday I'd like a live session with a certified K-bell teacher (we dont have any in this part of the world as far as I know yet).

Vee,

I read several threads you wrote about itrain. They are very informational. I used most of her itreads for treadmill. Do you use her iballet? How was it? How do you like the music? Will the ballet move difficult? My daughter is taking ballet lessons. According to her coach (figure skating), she is quite advanced. I am wondering if she and I can workout together using iballet so that she won't get bored and I won't feel too advanced. Thanks.

For those who like kickboxing, I ran thru prevention.com, and this dvd came across. Anyone have it? How do you like it?

Thanks

iBallet is nice if you like unweighted work. I would rate them as hi-intermediate on intensity. Grace can build quite a burn. iBallet usually combines barre type standing leg exercises and floor work.

If your daughter takes ballet classes she should be able to show you moves where the instructions are not clear. For the earlier iballets itrain has downloadable printouts of instractions with pics. For the more recent iballets there are video instructions.

The music is mostly the same as for the cardio itrains.

I think your daughter is likely to enjoy working out with mama with iballet.

One of my favorite workouts is Itread ballet. It has intervals of treadmill cardio alternated with 5 miute segments where you stand on the switched off tradmill and pretend the treadmill handrail is a barre. That may be a nice place to start.

Or you may want to plunge right in and pack an iballet.

I prefer weighted leg work but I still downloaded a couple of iballets. I dont regret getting them. I use them occasionally for a change of pace or when I am travelling and have no access to equipment or weights.

Thanks, Vee.

What do you think about Kelly Coffer's The Shape of Things to Come? I am planning to pre order her two new dvds. I saw this one on sale. Is it worth to buy? How does it compare to Cathe's Drill Max? My daughter and I love Drill Max.;)

4DS is awesome!! Highly recommend it. I have it and love it. I don't like KB, but I do like the 30 minute KB on this series. Shocked me, but I do. It's just so much fun!

Check out the clips.

ETA: I like the rest of it too. I adore the step segments. And the weight segments really got me going into weights. I started with weights that I could handle (my 2 - 8 lbers to start) and had some very nice strength gains while doing this series for 4 weeks in a row.

I think it is tough to go wrong with Kelly based on her stuff that I have, but I dont have TSOTTC. Her stuff tends to have good music, fun moves and lots of energy.

I am reasonably sure (from what I have experienced of Kelly) that TSOTTC will not be as intense as Drill Max (I love Drill Max too. I rate it among Cathe's most intense workouts and high on fun factor).

TSOTTC would be something I would buy for days when Drill Max feels too tough but I still want to be challenged.

Thanks!

Thanks, Vee, you are a wealth of information!

I had not heard of iTrain or cardio coach. I will check that out. Too bad I don't have a treadmill, though, for some of those workouts. I don't have Cathe's 4DS. That is the first time I haven't ordered her new stuff. I haven't been loving lifting weights (prefer to work the toning in with the cardio).

Thanks for the other suggestions, too. I think I will try Tracey Staehle. I have Kelly C-M's first 2 DVDs. I should try another one. Yes, I just noticed Patrick G's Hard Work 2. That looks right up my alley. What Mindy workouts are new? The only Amy Bento I have is HiLo Xtreme (I ordered it right around the time I quit exercising) and haven't been motivated to get past the first 10 minutes or so. I should try it again.

Thanks - you are so helpful!!

emy

If anyone else has any more suggestions, feel free... Also, I do like my P90X yoga X and would like to try another challenging yoga DVD...

Amy Bento's In the Ring is a fun kickboxing workout. I also like her Advanced Step Challenges, 2 and 3. Tracey Stahle Strike Zone is another kickbox workout that I like.

Emy,

Here are my top picks for challenging Yoga:

a. Shiva Rea - Yoga Shakti.
Shiva is an immensely experienced and talented teacher of yoga. This DVD is one of my all time favorites. It is one of the most beautifully shot exercise/yoga dvds ever. The music is great. It has loads of material combined into multiple length yoga premixes and a matric menu that lets you build your own workout.

b. Dharma Mittra - Maha Sadhna 1
Dharma to me epitomises the essense of yoga. He radiates goodness and wisdom. When he does physical yoga, he focuses on the physical yoga, no mixing of discorse into the session - which I like. http://www.pranamaya.com/what_mittra.html

c. Rodney Yee - Power Yoga for Everybody
This is an oldie but goodie. If you like endurance style yoga like P90-X this DVD will be a good pick. Rodney's teaching style is minimalist. His form is superb so you can learn a lot just by watching him.

d. Baron Baptiste - Just about anything from him.
He uses lovely music, and his live class sessions are nice because there are students at every fitness/flexibility level. He is very wordy but his routines are excellently put together, so I dont mind the wordiness.

e. Deb Dobbin - Spirit of Vinyasa flow
This is relatively new. It has loads and loads of material combined into 2 70 minute and 1 40 minute practise sessions and has a very neat pose guide that lets you work on perfecting your alignment. My best loved from recent yoga releases.

http://www.pranamaya.com/what_mittra.html

f. Bryan Kest - Power Yoga Collection
It has 3 one hour (or so) routines. Bryan's yoga is long-holds of poses - very endurance buidling and sweaty. He is the most wordy of the bunch.

Vee,

Thanks for your feedback. I did pre order her 2 30-min new dvds and TSFTTC. Can't wait to get them.

Favorite Athletic COMPLEX Step:
Advanced Step Challenge 3 - Amy Bento

Favorite Athletic Step:
Athletic Step Jam - Sharon Twombly

Cathe:
4DS because you can split the cardio and weight workouts until you build your stamina back up.

Weight:
30 Minutes To Fitness by Kelly Coffey Meyer (and I've preordered her newest 30 Min. to Fitness workouts) because you can get your whole body worked out in one hour or in two days in 30 min. sessions and you can start with ligher weights and build your strength back up.
The Shape of Things to Come b/c it is total body endurance type training that gets it all done in way under one hour.
All Pump by Amy Bento is one of her first offerings so keep that in mind but it's a nice little total body pump in under none hour that utilizes the step, weights, a barbell, and tubing.
The Parts Series by Tracey Staehle - I haven't really liked anything she's put out lately except this one that I rec'd in a trade. It uses a bosu, weights, and bands but it is a nice way to work your body parts in under one hour and to use lighter weights (but I did find that I was able to go quite heavy and feel the burn a bit more).

Hi/Lo:
This is fast and furious but I HAVE to put it in as one of my top picks for this year because it is simply some sweaty fun - Amy Bento's HiLow Knockout. The music is fantabulous, the workout moves at the speed of lightening and it leaves me in a smiling, sweaty, happy mess and it has an awesome weighted core section before the stretch.

HiLo with Kickbox Flare:
Amy Bento's In The Ring is so, so, fun and the medicine ball intervals are a nice little, endurance cardio burn. Again, the music is pumping and very motivating. This is not straight up kickbox at all.

Amy does require a bit of a learning curve for many people. Also, many people had a bit of a learning curve with Cathe's 4DS step cardio but I did not find it difficult.

Oh a great cardio based circuit workout is Sharon Twombly's All Body Attack.

Amy has nice long clips of all her workouts and they all work: www.nrgfitness.net

Kelly Coffey Meyer has clips up and the all work also (I think you can see longer clips of all her workouts on her site): www.coffeyfit.com

Of course, you know Cathe's clips all work so you can preview 4DS.

The only place I know of to check out Sharon's clips is www.collagevideo.com

Good luck and enjoy!!!

Edited to add HiLo Dome Cardio by Amy Bento. The choreography is easier to catch onto than HLX and it has a nice, short total body bosu workout also.

Hi, I saw you guys mentioned about Amy Bento. I checked out her website and some of clips seemed very good.

I found this website
http://www.800-buy-movies.com/800/category/dvdgrfitness.htm

it has 3 Amy Bento's dvds on sale for $11.07 each. They are Hi/Lo Xtreme, Kickbox Xtreme and All Pump Xtreme. If I buy 3 of them, the shipping fees would be $4.46. So the total for 3 dvds would be $37.67. Do you think this is a good deal? Also, what is your opinion of All Pump Xtreme?

Thanks

Hi:
You can get a better deal here (not exactly all the same ones, though):
http://search.deepdiscount.com/search?w=amy bento&
for 11.08 each + free shipping, they have hi/lo dome challenge, kickbox extreme, and slomo strength challenge. Also, I got a voicemail on my phone(odd, huh?) from DeepDiscount that if you order online using the coupon code BLUE, you can get 25% more on top of that. That offer ends Nov. 22.

I guess I will find something to buy.
