"unorthodox" careers

Hi all! I am just wondering if anyone here has what they would consider an unorthodox career or not your typical average job. My husband and I are seriously wanting to start two businesses that are very unconventional. Our family and friends think we are nuts. I am just looking for some support and advice. Cookiebaby:)

If you’re serious, try it. But make sure you keep your job in the beginning and just work two jobs, this will give you an idea if you can make it or not. As owning a business is hard, and a very big headache in the beginning. And the first 6 months you’re very lucky if you break even and pay the bills for the business, but it won't feed you, or pay for the house, car, or anything else in your daily life. That usually won't happen until about the 10th month. Even IRS, believe that most business owners lose money the first two years of business, and has a certain write off thing for them. And you won't start making real money until the 3rd year. So that might be something to keep in mind. My family has always started and owns their own business, and we've had a lot of success, 3 of our businesses have been bought by others who wanted them more. The 4th which is one I have now is still going very good, and I'm keeping this one unless someone offers me what is in Bill Gate's bank account. ;-) I like this one too much to sale, and I really don't want to start all over.

But a few things to do check the market of what you want to do, take a really big look at it. Is it profitable? Pretend your are doing it, and write down every single cost you can think of, as well as maintance cost, do the phone work, call and get prices. This will give you the low baseline of what you will need to make in order to break even, there will be more costs that you don't think of, so remember this is low base, meaning this is what you absolutely have to have. And figure it for month and year, this will depend on the quotes you get as well as you might have it per month to start with.

Check into the state laws, and make sure you keep your house separate from your business as well as your personal funds. If for some reason you get sued, if you didn't keep those two separate, you can lose everything. As well as IRS can come back on you. Both very nasty surprises.

Then look into getting a business licsens and finding out how much that costs, check to make sure there are no other requirements for what you want to do, with the state. Then go get a nice free checking account, and start promoting.

Also another note, most people pay a ton of money to promote their business and do it wrong or just too much. Too much will scare way customers or make them think your ripping them off. Look they can have this huge ad, they must really be charging too much.

You want nice, but not fancy. Stay away from TV ads until you are really making money; they cost a lot, and generally don't draw much local business. I have yet to know of a local business that has did a TV ad, get their moneys worth by the draw in of extra customers.

RE:

Okay, cookiebabay, you've peaked our curiosity, so what are you and DH thinking of doing?

IMO, as long as there ia a market (could be an untapped market) for what you're thinking, then it really isn't that unconventional.

I agree with Kit, though, that you may want to start one business at a time and one of you may want to keep your current job. Expecially if it has benefits like health care.
