Too skinny to exercise...

workout junkie

I have to vent. I was in Borders yesterday picking up a Lotte Berke DVD I had ordered. The guy who rang me up says "don't you think you're a little too skinny to be buying exercise videos?". I gave him a weird look, a fake laugh, then left. I was so irritated.

That happened once before - I was buying some yoga stuff and the overweight cashier said "you don't look like you need that". I felt like saying "but you do!".

What's wrong with people? I thought it was pretty rude. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'm not "skinny", I'm the way I am because I work out and eat right. I sure wish I had said something in response, but usually about an hour later is when I think of something good to say.

I was in Walmart one day in the check-out line venting sort of under my breath about the proliferation of high protein diets on the covers of magazines, and the woman next to me said "you don't look like you need to worry about carbs."

Hello.... the reason I look like I don't need to worry about carbs, is because I WORRY ABOUT CARBS!!!

Same with exercise. The reason I look like I don't need to exercise.... ready for it????? .... IS BECAUSE I EXERCISE.

People have a nasty habit of thinking out loud w/out realizing that their words can be insulting, ignorant and just plain maddening!! That is the problem! x(

Along the same lines, I was just running errands. I only went two different plcaes and somehow three people managed to look at me in ABSOLUTE AWE and say "Wow, you're tall" with their noses curled up like I was a tall, yet smelly, girl. Thanks, I never noticed...

I get comments too. Lately from my family. My MIL and SIL are the latest. We had my three boys and my niece playing at the park Monday and it was real hot. There was mention about coming back to my house so the kids could play in the water. My niece spoke up and said she didn't have her swimsuit. My SIL spoke up and said "I imagine aunt Bri has one that will fit you". She is 11. It wouldn't have been too bad but there has been other comments lately so it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. x(

I had this problem about a year ago. My brother was in Iraq and he was pulling all nighters and needed to stay alert so he wanted me to send him some energy thing, that I guess is used by dieters. The man at GNC refused to sell me the product because he said I was to small to speed up my metabolism or whatever it was he said, I was so mad I can't exactly remember.
I had to get a friend to go buy it for me. Can you believe that!! I was so ticked off... because when I'm not exercising or eating right I slip backwards quickly so its a constant thing for me. I totally understand your frustration and wish people would keep their unwelcomed opinions to themselves.

LOL Aren't some people dense!? Yes there are folks out there who are naturally slender, etc and do not exercise at all-my SIL for example! But tons of folks out there actually WORK at looking good and no one stops to think about that! As a matter of fact, my SIL tells me I shouldn't bother exercising because I don't need to but hello!?!? If I don't exercise I won't look the way I do! Which isn't even that hot to begin with! LOL

I guess if people truly are clueless ya can't get TOO mad at them, huh? They don't know any better!

Some people just don't know how to give a compliment, that's all they were trying to do.

But, I do know how people can say the dumbest things. My daughter has a skin pigmentation disorder (can't remember the name of it). Being pale skinned its really not noticable, but during the summer when she starts to tan she gets a spot around her eye that won't tan and her eye lashes are white. I've had people ask her if she had an accident, did you get bleach in your eye, are you blind in that eye, what did you do to your eye, or they don't say anything and they just stare. Luckily my daughter has a lot of self confidence and has learned how to handle these rude people, and now that she is older she wears mascara and its not as noticeable.

I have had family members to comment on how small I am and tell me I should eat something. Thy say I am not eating enough. That get me in the pitt of my stomach. Those ignorant people don't know that if you eat 5 or 6 meals a day that your will rev up your metabolism and look better. Its not because you don't eat. And I found that I was trying to explain myself to them. How Stupid!!

some people are clueless to being fit. oh and I hate the comments, you can afford to eat that cake look how small you are.

So I know how you feel. Some people need to gain some knowledge.

Sabrina...my other SIL (not the one I mentioned in my prev post) DOES really fit into some her 9 year olds clothes and vice versa where her daughter will occasionally wear something of her mom's!

Just curious...do you think your niece could have worn a suit of yours?

It's not a bad thing but the way it comes out of a person's mouth can make it sound awful, huh? :-(

IMO, as long as you don't look malnourished or anything like that and you are happy with the way you look, who give a !@#$#@ what others think, right? :7 It's none of thier flippin' business anyway!!! :p

I'll bet you look great, Sabrina as I'm sure the rest of you do too!

Have any of you seen Napoleon Dynamite? Napoleon asks a girl in the cafeteria if she's drinking 2percent milk cause she thinks she's fat. He says, "you're not, you know, you could drink whole milk..." Kinda funny.

All those folks making comments are just jealous, you know. Or they what to give you a compliment, and just don't know how to.

I always get a kick out of that when people say I don't need to watch what I eat because I'm so small. If I didn't watch what I ate, I wouldn't be small - now would I?

I would have said (though probably not, since I wouldn't have thought of it in time): "aren't you a little too rude to be working in the customer service industry?"

What's with people indeed!

Yes, it's that same circular "illogic" that they're using. "You don't have to avoid sugar/fat/crap, you're so slim." (Duh, how do you think I stay that way? ) "You don't have to work out, you're in good shape" (Double "duh," again, how do you think I got that way and stay that way?).

People can be boobs!

And why is it that cashiers think they have to make some comment to customers anyway? Often, comments that seem rather invasive and personal.

Once in Walmart, I had picked up a copy of Fitness and a copy of Oxygen. The cashier made the comment that the cover model of Oxygen looked "gross" (I happened to somewhat agree, as the photo really made her abs look like a bulgy six-pack, which is not a look I like), then made a comment about how pretty the skinny cover model looked (it was the woman from "Will and Grace", who I think is too thin). What if I aspired to look like the cover model of Oxygen (I bougth the magazine, after all, couldn't one assume I find that attractive)?

I also get nosy cashiers asking questions about food that I buy (veggie stuff, soy, things that "normal" folks don't seem to buy.). If it's natural curiosity, and sounds like they might be interested themselves, I'm glad to talk to them about it. But every once in a while, I get a cashier who basically makes some kind of "yuk" comment.

LOL! I get that reaction whenever I mention my diet. "Why are you dieting? You're already thin!" Helloooooooooo, if I didn't diet I would NOT BE TIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh, these kind of comments I hear so often I feel like puking! My DD hears it too as I just posted something on the same lines as you about similiar comments.
Yes, the reason we are fit is because we watch what we eat and work our butts off..duh! People can just be so ignorant that for me after hearing these same lines over and over again, I tend to realize just how dumb they sound. Do they really mean to compliment with a touch of sarcasm? Tune them out. Most likely they are only jealous anyways or just plain stupid! In my opinion, everyone should be working out no matter what your size is. No excuse unless you have a disability.

There are sooo many 'lose weight without dieting or exercising' schemes and advertisements geared to gullible consumers and they are buying the lie (literally!). They are completely oblivious to the concept that health, fitness and being lean (for most of us) takes a lifetime commitment. They would also be oblivious to the fact that we enjoy the challenge of working out, (for me it's like play time) and don't feel denied because we aren't fuelled on simple sugar, fast food and other assorted crap.
The rudness of cashiers and strangers baffles me completely, how dare you make a comment of a personal nature about my body and assume that it's okay to do so BLAHHHH!!x( Okay, I feel much better now!:7

Take Care

I think that most people mean these as compliments. I mean society tells us woman should be "thin." The poor guy just used the wrong terminology and said skinny instead. If someone told me I didn't look like I needed to buy an exercise video or worry about carbs I would take that as I'm doing something right and thank you very much. A lot of people don't exercise or understand that you have to work hard and work consistently even after the weight comes off. I think a lot of the comments are quite innocent and are read into way more than they need to be. Sorry...these types of comments just don't get me all bent out of shape(pardon the pun), especially when the person making them is not purposely trying to be rude or ugly. Just my lille ol' cent.

Oops!!! Big edit...I just re-read that the guy said "too skinny." I can see the gripe in that but still...since I want to drop 5 to 10 pounds...being descibed as too skinny by some little ol' cashier still wouldn't bother ME personally.;)

Don't get me started on the "too skinny" comments. My strategy of late is to try to politely explain that calling someone "skinny" (especially if that someone thinks she is too skinny) is as rude as calling someone "fat." What if you had been buying a muffin at Borders and the cashier had said, "don't you think you're a little too fat to be buying a muffin?"
