Time off of exercise

Hi Cathe, I am an avid exerciser, and usually work out to your tapes and run about 5-6 days per week. I am going on a 2 week vacation, and was wondering if this break will affect my fitness level. I love to work out, and hate the idea of not being able to for 2 whole weeks, although I know a break is always good now and then. I would love to hear from you. By the way, I think all of your workouts are awesome, and they definitely keep me in shape...thanks!

Hi, Jacque, I'm not Cathe but I did a web search and came up with this. You should be fine for two weeks. I found a study that followed healthy young women and they maintained their strength months into detraining.

When I go on vacation, I take running shoes along and there's always those pesky push ups and crunches, squats and lunges which really require no equipment. If on the other hand, you really want a vacation from exercise, you should come back relaxed, and energized, ready to start up where you left off.

Have fun!

Just my humble little opinion that your two week vacation is going to be a good thing. You're body may just respond a bit more with a vacation. I take fitness vacations about two to three times a year. So, usually they are anywhere from 7 to 14 days. It beats the overtraining and it gives me a break.

You'll be fine. If we were talking a month or more, then . . . you might have to start to worry.

Enjoy yourself and have some fun. Know that your tapes and regular routine will be waiting for you when you get back.

Keta. :D

Don't Worry!

Hi,
I just recently took a few weeks 'off' and didn't exercise (plus, I ate whatever I wanted). I did this so I could kind of have a fresh start (I'm joining a new gym, graduated college, etc). Anyway, I haven't noticed any difference other than I'm a bit more bloated (from all the food) and maybe a tad "softer." But I think I'll bounce back after a week or 2 once I start to workout again and cut back on the junk food.
You'll be fine!!!

RE: Don't Worry!

Boy are you lucky: i swear, I've taken off 4 - 5 days before and when i go back to Cathe's tapes, i feel like i've never done one before. Maybe everyone is just different. I have been working out for my entire adult life, (i'm 37)and play competitive tennis 3-4 times per week, as well as do Cathe's tapes.
What is your secret? Maybe its all in my head, but i really feel like I'm dying cardio-wise, when i try and pick up where i left off!!!

RE: Thanks everyone! :)

Thank you all for making me feel so much better. I am more at east after hearing your experiences, and feel better knowing that this break can be a positive thing for my mind and body. I will make sure I check in when I get back and let you guyz know how it went...Thank you again and keep on moving!

Hi Jacque! Being that you are such an avid exerciser I think you will be absolutely fine taking a two week break from working out. You may feel sluggish for the first two or three workouts upon your return to exercise but after that you will bounce right back. It may also give you a renewed boost of energy being away from it that long.

On the other hand, if exercise is just so much a part of your life that you feel two weeks off is just a little too long for you than do a maintance workout. Run for 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a week and do some crunches(3 minutes worth), push ups (three sets of 12) dips off of a chair (three sets of 12), non-weighted squats (three minutes worth) and alternating non-weighted front or back lunges (three sets of 24 alternating your leg with each rep). Have a great time!
