Did anyone see this last night on TLC?

It kind of freaked me out. It was about a woman body builder and her need to win 1st place in the Olympia competition. Wow -- it seemed really abusive to her bod.

What was so disconcerting was how she looked -- masculine, and her VOICE sounded like a man. So did her friend and fellow bodybuilder.

It was really, really, interesting, but it was a kinda creepy how much she looked and sounded like a man.

I didn't see it from the beginning so I'm hoping it will be on again soon.

Marla,

Hey, how are you doing? Oh, I can't believe I missed it!!! Darn! I usually watch TLC on most nights. I did watch something about "The boy who's skin fell off". I watched Chasing Lance on FitTv instead. He is so amazing. Gosh, I wish I could ride a bike like him then I wouldn't have any cellulite to worry about..EVER!

Take care!

Hi Charlotte,

Haven't "seen" you in a while. Great to hear from you. :)

I forgot about "Chasing Lance." I wanted to see that. It's like a mini-series, isn't it?

I think Ms Olypia as become kind of a freak show. In the 80's, the contestants (Rachel McLish, Gladys Portuguese, Lori Bausten, later Cory Everson) looked feminine, more like the "fitness contestant" women of today. Then it got more and more into the "man with long hair" look. There are definitely some 'roids in those women!

That gradual change to more muscular women lead to a decrease in the audience, and the development of the "fitness" contests.

I'm sure these women are pumped with steroids, too. I wonder if they perceive themselves as we see them. I cannot imagine actually wanting to look and sound like that. It was so odd and freakish.

The woman they focused on, Joanna, had 3% body fat. Huh??? Isn't that self-destructive? Then they showed her stuffing down sugar right before the competition to make her veins pop. Yikes!!! The day before she couldn't have any water or food for I don't know how long. That just doesn't seem rational or lucid. There's something really wrong with that.

Are they so absorbed in winning that they somehow don't notice the change in their voice, their face, or don't realize how abusive they are being to themselves? All this for a title?

Amazing, really.

I saw this last week. My husband must have asked me three times, "are you sure they aren't men?" I just can't see putting your body through that for that long. There have to be serious long-term health consequences...

I saw it advertised but missed it.My hubby made a comment when he seen it adout how gross it was my coment back was you have no idea what it takes and how hard you have to work to gain even a little muscle much less that much.I personaly wouldn't want to be that muscular(I am not a bodybuilder she is ) but I know that even IF she is taking roids that she still has to work hard for what she has and I admire that much dedication.I'm not saying what they do is healthy but I still admire what they transform there bodies into.

Although, in a way, this could be some of us taken to the extreme. I notice that when I work out and am more muscular ("buff" more than "amazonian" or "freakazoid"), I want more (but not to the extent of the female body builders, or even the fitness contestants or most of Cathe's crew). I also see the women on the covers of fitness magazines and think they are puny and need some muscle tone. The female bodybuilders maybe just keep wanting more, and see women with a nice amount of muscle as "too puny" and needing more.

I can't understand it either, but I suppose they get caught up in the process of building, getting bigger, getting harder, and they don't step back to look at how they seem compared to the rest of the world.

I would think they'd notice the voice (sounds like a "in-transition" transexual I ran into the other day), the hardness in the facial features, the growth of their clitoris (a side-effect of 'roid use in women), the growth of facial hair (another 'roid side effect).

I happened to catch that! I couldn't stop watching. At first I thought maybe there was something wrong with her x-y chromosomes or something, but then they showed a dozen more ladies just like her. If it weren't for the make-up I honestly would have assumed they were guys. It was very surprising to me. I don't know much about steriods, but isn't there some way to test them for steroid use and disqualify them?

I didn't hear the part about 3% body fat. Ouch. And did you hear what they said about how weak they are? They said the day of the competition they are so weak from dieting, it takes all their energy just to flex. x( How ironic. And they probably haven't had monthly cycles in years. It's all so self-destructive.

I saw the show last week. In interviews with the parents, they said that they worried about their daughter because she takes "supplements" and it could have lasting affects. They said she took them because all the women take them and that's what it took to be a contender. The word "steroid" was never used, but it certainly was implied.
