Hi everyone,

I need suggestions on a good heart rate monitor. I need one that says how many calories are burned during activity and I don't want to strap something around my chest if possible. The one I had was a watch, but had that thing you put around your chest. It was a cheap one. I just need some input before I spend the money on a better one.

Hi Alia!

If you want a strapless heart rate monitor there is the MIO watch- don't have the URL but you can probably google heart rate monitors and find it. It's a wrist watch that you touch with two fingers to get your rate. I don't know if it has the calories burned feature or not. In addition, what I understand is that it is not as reliable as those monitors that use a strap around your chest.

I have the Polar M61 and I love it! It has a comfortable elastic strap (hardly can feel it on) and has the cals burned feature, target heart rate zone and alarm to tell you if you are out of zone, etc.

HTH and good luck in your search.

Elizabeth :)

I have a Polar A5 and love it (you program in height, weight, birthdate once and it uses that info plus your heart rate to figure out calories burned), but it has the chest strap.

I've known people that use the Mio and love it, but I have a problem with the type where you put your finger on something--it doesn't seem to register my pulse. I haven't figured out why that is, but it takes FOREVER for me to get a heart rate that way...I generally have to stop completely and even then it doesn't always register. In fairness, I never owned a Mio, the version I had was a cheaper brand, so that could be why.

I have seen the Polar online..Is the strap annoying at all. The one I had was very uncomfortable. Can you purchase the Mio at any fitness store or website?? Or is there a special website for that one?? I would like to check that out. Thanks!!

Aila

You can purchase the Mio heart rate monitor from gophysical.com or from Gaiam.com. I have one and like it very much. I have the Shape model and there is a Sport model for a little less money.

Hi Aila,

I just wanted to mention that I have a Polar M52. The strap doesn't annoy me at all. I've gotten so used to it that I don't even feel it. In fact, a couple of times I've gone for a walk in the morning and realized around 5 p.m. that I was still wearing the strap. I've seen that the M32 has a softer strap.

What I love is that it gives me immediate readings and that I can set my HR zone with alarms. I like that I don't have to put down my weights in order to know if I'm in my zone. It tells me.

Hi Aila, sorry, I just got back online! :) As was mentioned above, I usually don't notice the strap anymore. I too have forgotten to take it off and realized just as I was ready to hop in the shower.

Hi Donna,

Please don't apologize!! I haven't gotten a chance to go look yet, but that sounds good. I will check those out some time tonight. Thanks again!!

Aila:)
