<--Still Doing Push Up On Knees

Aarrgghh!!! I feel so weak!!! Last night I was like ok Tassha....you can do this...drop and give me 20!...was only able to do 2 before I collapsed to the floor...Now on my knees I can do about 30 (and don't get me started on Cathe's drop set in Gym Style) Just wondering does anybody know how long it takes before you can do real push ups? Do I need to lift more? Push Ups everyday? I'm 147lbs (although thats not my ideal weight) I just think its so pathetic that I can't do 5 real push ups in a row...Any suggestions?

NaturalBeauty - This is how I did it, first can you do one push up on your toes? I couldn't at first, but I finally made myself try. With much grunting I was able to pull off one push-up on my toes and then I would do 14 on my knees. The next day I would try 2 on my toes and 13 on my knees and so on and so forth. Eventually (and I didn't up it every day just when I felt strong enough to add just 1 more on my toes) I had it up to 15 push-ups on my toes. Then my next goal was to do 2 sets of 15. In just a few months, I went from being able to do 0 on my toes to at least 3 sets of 15. I found it easier to force just one more push-up than to start trying to do 15 on my toes from the get go - something which I would never have been able to do. I do not think doing them on my knees helped me at all in preparing to do them on my toes. I think the only way I got good with doing them on my toes was by "doing them on my toes". Just start very low and work your way up slowly substituting out your knee push-ups for toe push-ups as you go along. And it may not have been smart for me to do them everyday, but I was determined to get them down at the time before the RT.

I have recently graduated to big-girl push-ups. I could do lots from my knees - doing P90X seems to have helped for some reason. And I was doing all the variations, with the claps, all of it. So I'm thinking I have to be able to do a few from my toes - so I tried. I found a few things apply - 1) abs must be tight and you have to keep your upper body in a straight line (think Dirty Dancing - keep your frame locked); 2) be sure you have the arm and shoulder strength, too - a true pushup is almost a total body exercise; 3) mind over matter - I find when I think I can't do them, I can't.
So, with those three things in mind I tried one day and - did four. Then a couple of days later tried again - did eight! Now, regardless of what I do that day, I try to do at least one set of pushups at least every other day (or every day). One set - 16!!!! I still can't believe it. If I was more consistent in my workouts, I'd be able to drop and do 20 easily - even more.
Good luck!!

NY25 I'd like to give you a nuggy for using this terminology. Maybe a wedgie too. We are all big girls (and boys) and there is nothing wrong with doing push ups from the knees. Things such as injuries can prevent people from doing them on their toes but it doesn't mean they are any less in shape. I for one and quite talented doing pushups with margaritas in each hand.... :p
