Snacks

I am a grazer. I pick up little things to carry in my hands and snack throughout the day. I would like to stick a bowl out each morning of a good snack food to graze on throughout the day and that way hopefully stay away from the cookies and chips that fit so well in my hands. I have thought of grapes, blueberries, nuts and pretzels. Any other ideas? Michele

DH and I like to make a trail mix of some Kashi cereal, almonds and raisins. You could add other nuts or dried fruit as well.

Perhaps some butter free/salt free popcorn?? You could add your own touch of seasonings as you see fit.

Keep in the fridge: sliced cucumbers, zucchini, etc. (slice or cut into 'fry' shapes, or try some other shapes: the shape/texture of a food changes the experience of it). Red pepper. Celery. Carrots.

Frozen grapes and blueberries are good as well, for a cold, more solid texture and more chew.

Do you have a dehydrator? If so, you could make dried veggie 'chips' (same as zucchini slices, for example, but drying them changes the texture and flavor. The thinner you slice before dehydrating, the crisper they will get).

For nuts, buy raw nuts (almonds are good), soak 6-8 hours (or overnight) then drain, rinse and let dry (or use dehydrator---they will get crunchier that way). More nutritious than roasted nuts.

Strawberries.

For a 'cookie' substitute that is higher in fat than the previous suggestions (but healthy fats), make peanut butter balls: mix together PB, some liquid sweetener (I used to use honey, but now use agave, any of the grain sweeteners---rice syrup, barley malt syrup--would work as well) and carob powder. Add raisins, sunflower seeds, coconut, whatever you like. Roll into balls (make them small! about the size of a grape, perhaps). Keep in the fridge so they stay more solid and the oil from the pb doesn't 'sweat' to the surface. Also try other nut butters (almond, macademia, etc.).

I too love to snack.

I keep the 90 calorie Quaker chocolate chip granola bars at work, so when I need a quick snack I have that.

I eat a lot of popcorn that is only 100 calories per bag.

That is a lot of popcorn and is very filling for me.
