Slightly off-beat things to do in Vegas?

OK, here's the situation. SO is in Vegas for the week for work. Basically he's on call in case he's needed but most of the time he's going to be twiddling his thumbs waiting for a phone call.

He isn't really into gambling so I wondered if all you lovely folks could recommend some fun, cheap, unusual things for him to do.

He's already considering a trip to the Largest Thermometer in the World

Oh, and he's an engineer, so geek-friendly destinations are welcome.

I have never been, but the Stratosphere tower looks interesting. It has a set of rollercoasters that operate 1000 feet above the ground on its roof. Unless he is afraid of heights...

I love Vegas but am not a big gambler.

There's a ton of shopping and restaurants. Of course, if he's on his own and isn't a shopper, that's not much fun.

The shows are fantastic, ranging from a tad expensive (Bette Midler) to super fun and campy (female impersonators).

Beavs, he's working *this close* to Area 51. I know he'd love to get in there. I'm sure he'll head over to the strip once anyway just to people watch and scan for aliens. LOL

I'm thinking there must be some really weird museums or collections out there.

I live here in Sin City, so I can say that he could literally sit on a bench somewhere on the strip and be entertained just by watching all the people...its a weird place with even weirder people.
Oh, I think that the Hilton has some sort of Star Trek deal going on...if he likes comedy, the best show on the strip is Carrottop--really! Plus his tickets are cheap, he is at the Luxor. I have been to his show 7 times in the past two years, that is how fabulous he is!
There is always the strip clubs...KIDDING!

If he has a vehicle, Mount Charleston is less than an hour a way, and beautiful with fabulous hiking......and nice cool temps. We were there in June and the temps were in the upper 60's.

Oh, Tneah, I'm ROTFLMAO. He is welcome to hit a strip club if he so desires. I just can't quite picture it. He's a very refined, well-mannered guy. Well, still waters run deep as they say. I'll suggest it. (We need the little devil smiley)

People watching - perennial favorite activity.

I know he'd love to go for a hike, that place sounds beautiful. But he has to be within cell phone range.

I was going to recommend the Liberace museum too. I loved it. I also like to visit the lions at the MGM Grand.

Hitler's staff car used to be in the Auto Collection at Imperial Palace. I haven't checked in years, but it might still be there. Bullet holes and all.

No cell phone service up there, but it is absolutely beautiful. There is cell phone service at the charming restaurent that is up there. Red Rock is also beautiful, but warmer, because not as high up. Hoover Dam is cool, and within cell phone range. Can you tell I don't like the strip, although just walking around looking was fun.

Go to THEhotel at Mandalay Bay and take the outside elevator up to the bar/restaurant "Mix". The view is without equal. Be sure to go after dark. You can eat dinner there (very expensive) or just have a cocktail in the lounge. Outside seating overlooking the strip.

Also, another great place for the view is The Eiffel Tower restaurant in the Paris Hotel. The view is of the Bellagio fountains. The food is wonderful, but expensive. For a cheaper alternative, go after dark and sit at the bar and have a cocktail while you watch the fountains. Beautiful! (After your cocktail, go down to street level and see the fountains up close)

Lots and lots of shopping. The Forum Shops have some cool statues that move and do a show of sorts throughout the day. Stratosphere has a great view as someone else suggested, but the property is kind of old and grimey. There are amusement rides at the top.

Go to the Venetian and take a ride on the gondolas. Or, eat at the sidewalk cafe where you can just watch the boats go by.

Treasure Island has a pretty cool pirate show in the water in front of the hotel throughout the day and evening. It's always crowded though, so you need to get there a while before each show to be able to see anything.

I also live in Vegas and agree with Tiffany(tneah) the Hilton has Star Trek. And I believe the Tropicana has a Titanic show. You may want to suggest the the following casions just for the sites alone; Bellagio, Treasure Island, Venetian, Ballys, Paris, Caesars Palace and the Wynn. I hope this information is helpful.
