Running Shoes

Hey Everyone,
I'm looking to buy new running shoes because my Mom and I are training for a 3 mile race that our city has annually every year before the end of summer. We did almost every year since I was 9. It's really fun. But my old running shoes don't fit well anymore, and am looking for new ones. I have addidas, but I wouldn't wear them running. Maybe a pair that Cathe uses or whatever. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

~Adri;-)

If you have a speciality running store nearby, I highly recommend going to it and having someone look at your feet (and some even have a treadmill where they have you take a quick run so they can see how your feet hit the ground) so they can give you the shoe that's right for you. Before I did Team in Training, I used to always buy running shoes by what was on sale or what brand I thought I was good (or sometimes even what I thought looked cute ;)), but I never realized what a difference the right shoe can make. All of those times before that I struggled to run, only to give up - it was all because I was using the wrong types of shoes!! When I joined TNT, they had us go to a specialty running store and I met with those folks and they found me a shoe that was perfect for me. Now I LOVE running and I don't have those issues I had before like shin splits, sore heels, numbing, etc.

My two cents :)

Adri,
I second the recommedation to head to a running store (e.g. Fleet Feet) and get shoes tailored for YOUR feet/needs. Don't go by what works for others. The feets gotta be happy! :)

I 4th the idea. Take with you whatever you are running in now. They will analyze the wear on the tread to see how your foot strikes and they will look on the sides of the shoe to see where it is wearing. This helps them put you in a shoe best suited for how your body naturally runs.

It may seem like more money ($70-$130) but the shoes will last you about 500 miles. Believe me, running shoes are not something you want to skimp on!

Oh, and grab yourself some cotton free socks with wicking capabilities! Don't want blisters! Or sweaty feet!

Yep, another one totally agreeing here!! Good running shoes make a huge difference & good running socks too!

Good luck running, it's an addictive thing once you get started!

Hugs,

Amen to that! And just for extra protection, grab some Bodyglide or Sport Shield - they are wonderful at preventing blisters. I love these things!

Just a sideline comment about the specialty running store. I went to one as I overpronate a lot! The store employee recommended Brooks and I bought them. I wore them for about a month (just long enough to not be able to take them back) and hated them! They are ugly and I don't like the way they fit my feet and I get shin splints EVERY time I run in them!!! They are now relegated to the back of my active fitness shoe collection! In fact, they got toss into the back of my closet last I saw.
I had purchased a pair of MBT shoes last March and started running in them by chance. I LOVE them!! They are the only shoes (tried Ryka N-Gage runners, too)that I don't get shin splints from running. They are really heavy and look like clod-hoppers but you can't make me give them up!!! They were really expensive,($245) too, but for the way they make my legs feel while and after running, they are worth every penny!

Amy,
I would've gone back to the store and see what they might've been willing to do for you. Maybe a new insole might've done the trick.

Amy: that's too bad about your experience :(. Did the store offer a guarantee? The store I go to will take back shoes (even after you've run on a trail with them and get them all dusty!!) if they give you problems. I have a friend who went back three times because she had issues with each one they tried. The fourth time ended up being the charm, though.

Oh no! Amy, I just bought my first pair of Brooks yesterday. My last three were Mizuno. I had an ankle issue not long ago, so the guy working recommended Brooks. He told me they had more support then my current running shoe. Well, I have 30 days. I better get out and get some serious running in to see how they work for me! He also recommended Asics, but they didn't have my size. :-(

ETA: Adri, I would go to a specialty store as everyone here has already suggested. :)

You can also use vaseline on your feet instead of the BodyGlide. BodyGlide works great and the application is "no mess" but when I use the vaseline, my feet are baby soft after a run!:7

I only make this suggestion so that you know you don't have to head out with a long list of things to purchase for your 3 mile race. Some home remedies will do, too!

Amy, do you have a Fleet Feet store near you? They are a great running shoe store, and have the treadmill where they videotape your stride, etc. The best thing though is that they will take back a shoe that doesn't work for you no matter the time frame.

:D

Thanks for the suggestions. No, we don't have a Fleet Feet here in the boondocks!:7
The specialty store is a local place where the employees just watch you walk back and forth about 15 ft and then make recommendations.
No, they don't offer a guarantee, unfortunately, so I am stuck with these Brooks shoes that, although they aren't uncomfortable, they are not good running shoes for me! They still look decent with jeans.

Yes, like everyone said....Go to a specialty running store and have your foot analyzed. They will recommend the perfect running shoes for your type of feet! It is soooo worth it!

:)

I've been very happy with Asics!
