Rollerblades?

Do any of you rollerblade? I am thinking of buying rollerblades, more for leisure than exercise. Can anyone recommend a brand or style? I am clueless in this area!

Thanks in advance!

This is of interest to me, too. AND how to learn to use them - I tried about 15 years ago, but quit because I couldn't learn how to STOP!!!!!! What's the best way to learn? Lessons? Trial & error?

I have had my rollerblades since 1989, the original rollerblade, with laces:p They are made by rollerblade co. I have had to change the wheels and brakes more times than I can count, but they are so much fun, and so worth it! At the time, I lived in NYC, and it was my mode of transportation. The thrill of weaving in and out of traffic was such an incredible high. I have taken them everywhere I have traveled. They have been through Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Great way to get around. Now I whip them out and have my kids chase me around! :) :) Get them!

I love to inline skate. I have a pair of K2's and I really like them. I got them at Sport Authority.

Thanks for the replies everyone! One more question: what's the difference between a "regular" rollerblade and one labeled "fitness"?

honeybunch- I think trial and error is the best way. Have someone who is a good skater go out with you, and wear a helmet and some padding lol!

Gina!!! Hey sweetie!!! :)

Rollerblades r great. Been a long time since I have been on mine, but I used to love love love it. I used to have the "need for speed". lol. Actually, to try to climb myself out of this funk lately, I got myself three lessons. Beginning ones. Seems I know how to skate real fast and good but can't stop on a dime. So, that is a problem, as I am sure you know. My skates are Salomon TR MAG III's I believe. Really cool skates. Higher end tho. Make sure you get skates that are over $100 or they probably won't be nice enough to really make you fall in love with the sport. My only wish is that you lived in Az and we could skate together!!!:(

Have fun!

I live in S FL. I started skating by renting skates at a surf shop where they also offered a few free lessons. That was about 14 years ago...ahhh, I still remember cutie pie Chip, the instructor.
Anyway, I bought the same type skate I had rented. (rollerblades with laces, too)

If you get low end skates, the wheel bearings will not be as great and you may have to work really hard. When you are picking up the skates, spin the wheels and see how long they spin.

The size of the wheel has something to do with the speed I think and the softness and hardness of the wheels relate to smooth/bumpy rides and also speed. The boots of my rollerblades cracked and fell apart recently, so I just invested in a new pair. I used this link to help me evaluate my choice.

In the spirit of no longer being young and invincible, I always wear helmet and knee and wrist pads and even elbow pads. I am not a natural born skater and am usually very thankful I didn't actually fall, even though I have lots of "AACCKK" moments.

I hope this helps.

Be careful that you dont get a pair that are too fast. I wore a cheapy pair (Target) for quite a while. When they wore out, I got a really good pair of Rollerblades. They go so fast that now I am afraid to skate!

Skates have different "grades" depending on how fast the wheels spin. So be careful.

I inline skate a lot during the summer and just bought another pair last year..........K2's. They are the best (I think!).

Oh, I LOVE inline skating. In the summer I routinely do 20 km skates (that's about 12 miles, I think). I have Koho skates. They lace up and I find the lace up are much better than the old hard boot blades I had. Also make sure you get really good wheels. They make a huge difference.

I would suggest taking a couple of lessons just to learn the basics, like stopping and skating hills.

Skating is incredibly exhilirating! You're gonna love it:)

Jody, I am totally with you on the gear! I always wear the helmet, knee, elbow and wrist guards. i don't fall down, but at 49 am more cautious than I used to be!
Re:skates to the original poster:
My skates are K2s and I would *highly* recommend SOFT body skates. They fit like an athletic shoe. The other info is right on re: hardness of wheels etc. I like really hard wheels becuase when you hit a pebble, you won't go flying.
I live in WI and a week ago was able to get my skates out for the first time this year. . .but will have to wait for a few more weeks now that it is once again cold and snowy!

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions, ladies! I can always count on getting good advice here. I am going to go to The Sports Authority tomorrow :)

Janice, I may just end up in your neck of the woods if I don't learn how to stop!
