Richard Simmons is Taking a Survey

I saw on the TOday show, that Richard SImmons is fighting to get PE back as a mandatory course in the schools. His claim is that the "no child left behind law" as left our kids health and self esteem behind b/c lack of movement. He also said, as parents, we are responsible, but it would help for kids who can't go to a gym or have nowhere to play, to at least have the schools as a safe haven. He has posted a link for a survey for anybody to take, and when he gathers them up, he says he will go to washington in hopes to make the President understand, that our children need help as they are a big part of this obesity epidemic. While I condone it, I am not trying to put pressure on anybody, I am just passing the message along to those that are interested. Thanks

I think this is a great idea. We live on an Army base and they used to have gym only two days a week and art, drama, and music the rest of the time, but I guess they changed it and made gym class everyday. I think this is great because a lot of kids just go home and watch tv all day and don't get outside so they need to get outside at school. Not to mention that sitting in school all day and listening to a teacher gets wearing on the brain and they need a little time to get moving and reenergized. Great!

Well, my ex husband is a PE teacher. So I think PE should be banned from all public schools & all PE teachers should be fired. }(

Just kidding. I've been really disappointed to see I guess what are called "elective" classes cut b/c of school budgets. Not just PE, but things like art, vocational training, etc. The whole standards of learning thing is just killing our public school system IMO, & I really think it's a shame children are being forced into cookie cutter curricula without having any room to grow, be creative, & experiment in different fields.

OK I'll take Simmons's survey even tho he annoys the heck out of me.

heck yeah!!!i remember the days wheni had to take gym class and that was at least 3 days a week. and it was an actual class sometimes in high school. had tests, midterms and all that LOL. but mostly your grade was based on making sure you got changed and participated. a few years ago when my sister when in a different high school, she actually got a D b/c she was a bad volleyball player. i think that teacher got fired, don't know. but its sickening nowadays. my daughter only gets gym ONE day a week. granted they have recess movement breaks, but that is only HER school b/c they house such a large number of special needs children that need that in order to stay focus during the day, and release some of their anxieties.

i have talked to several younger teachers who have quite teaching b/c of this. my daughter, yeah she can do some of the work, but her real expression of learning comes from that imagination that doctors told autistic children didn't have. alot of teachers feel the same way, while they feel its important to learn some of your textbook curricula, there should be more breathing room to let their creativity and individual though expand. viola is a hands on learner and its hard to have her sit through out the day and just stare at books and papers. even viola gets tired of books, and this child can open her own library.

I totally agree with what you are saying. Here in Texas the kids have this mandatory testing called the TAKS test. My kids aren't the age to take it yet but I know many parents who say their kids are so scared because they have to pass this test. Also, teachers don't like it because they are limited in what they can teach because they have to teach what they can for the kids to pass this test. It leaves the teachers with their hands ties and the kids too stressed. Where is the fun in learning? I wanted to go back to school to be a teacher but when I see all this stuff on the news and hear parents and teachers complaining, it's like what's the use. I don't want to be a teacher now because the fun is taken out of it. Teachers and kids can't be creative and experiment and stuff like you said because of putting so much into one test. It is horrible.

Can we trust Richard Simmons in delivering this important message? You know, he's considered a joke? Even when he has helped so many people for weight problems, when I see him on TV, he just seems like a joke to me. I hope he does a good job.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

to some he is a joke to others he is a lifesaver. i don't see denise austin(who is suppose to beon the council of fitness) doing much, nor any other of these fitness gurus who have the publicity to do so. so to me it doesn't matter, as long somebody does something.

He's been very successful over the years and his message is a very sensible one as far as his eating plans (food mover, etc.)and workouts. I actually admire the guy. Good for him and this PE in schools campaign of his!

Thanks for the link!
