Pure Strength

I'm considering buying the Pure Strength series on DVD and I'm wondering how it compares to Slow & Heavy, and Pyramid Upper/Lower (I have both of those DVDs).

Can you please tell me what you think and how they compare?

Thanks!

Pure Strength is closer to how you would lift weights in a gym. It does not utitlize the pyramid system (like PLB/PUB. You might have a first set as a 'warm up' with a lighter weight, then you switch to a heavier weight and do 2-3 more sets (each set has anywhere from 10-16 reps). You do several different exercises per body part before moving on to a new body part. Pure Strength is different than Slow and Heavy in that you lift everything with either a single or two/two count. No 6/2 counts in these workouts. Pure Strength legs has a floorwork section which is basically glute tucks using the high step, inner thigh lifts using a body bar, and outer thigh lifts using a body bar. Cathe uses a 15 lb. body bar! I use my 8 lb Firm Sculpting Stick and fry every time. How she does it with 15 is beyond me!

If I had to make a comparison, I think the Pure Strength Series is closest in style to the new Gym Styles, although PS is done strictly with barbell and dumbbells and no pulse counts to speak of.

Sabine -- thanks for such a thorough explanation. I do have another question. Now that I understand the format of PS I'm interested to know how this contributes to physical fitness as compared to the Pyramids or Slow & Heavy. I know it's beneficial to switch up my training program regularly -- but, other than that, are there different results that make this a complement to what I already have?

Thanks again!

PS builds strength. If you have the GS series, I wouldn't bother getting it. The GS is a revised version and I like it better personally. I used to use the PS legs a lot. But I haven't for 2 years now. I now prefer to alternate GS legs and LL. You don't "need" to get it, only if you want even more variety.

Sabine gave you a thorough description of PS and good comparisons between that and S&H and Pyramids. I like PS for its straightforward gym-type feel. I think it's a good break from most of Cathe's workouts, where the counts are slowed down or their rhythms are changed. I got very good strength gains with PS.

I also made a lot of strength gains with PS. But I like the Gym Styles better--they move quicker and have more energy, at least for me. I also like that there are more exercises, but obviously that's cause the Gym Styles are on 3 DVDs whereas PS is on one. My other complaint is that PS is older--the exercises are good, but the look and feel and the music all come across as dated to me. Still, even with all that, I use it fairly regularly.
