Protein: whey vs. soy

Has anybody tried both bases of protein. I'm currently using whey (dairy) based protein, but am almost out and I'm going to be starting Shaklee vitamins, so I also ordrered their soy (plant) based protein. Has anybody done both? If so, what, if any, differences were there for you, and did you have a preference? Thanks.

Lorrie

I prefer whey. I was drinking the Shaklee energizing shake that is soy and it had me so bloated, my clothes hardly fit me. I stopped drinking the Shaklee soy and withing a few days the bloat was gone! It was really bad! My tummy was pushed out so far, it was hurting my sides!

That is just me, everyone is different! You may have great luck! I know some who have the same problems with whey.

Hi,
This is the first time I've heard anyone else say that they get stomach bloat with soy. I really like the Kashi crunch cereal, but I pay big time for it when I eat it. Say breakfast is at 4:30 a.m. for me, by noon my stomach is so distended and painful. For a long time, I thought it was milk products or fruit, but never linked it to the Kashi cereal, until I stopped eating it. No more bloat! It's not so bad if I'm at home and up and moving, but a sedentary desk job like I have, no way anymore!!

Another option is a pea/rice combination protein. Both peas and rice are high quality proteins (though incomplete in themselves), which form a complete protein when combined. They are also more easily digested than soy proteins for some people.

I use soy protein powder (Spirutein Naturals), and don't notice any problem with bloating. But that's just me. :) I try to avoid dairy, so haven't tried whey protein. So I guess I'm not much help, eh? ;)

No you are helpful, because I've never had the soy, so based on the responses I'm thinking bloat goes with soy. But if you've not experienced that I guess it's not necessarily so. I know it depends on each body composition. I was actually hoping to hear from those who HAVE tried both to get a comparison. So thank you Sarah and anyone else who has done them both. I'm a little tentative to try the soy now, but I'll just have to see how I react.

I've tried them both. Didn't notice any problems with either, guess my body isn't to sensitive. I use whey most of the time because I prefer the taste. Also with whey I noticed more defination, I drink the shakes after working out, this could be the work outs even though they were very similar.
Hope this helps a little. Give it a try you may really like it, who knows

Lorrie,

I am prone to bloat with some foods but not soy. But I don't drink the shakes. I add the powder to my oatmeal. I haven't tried whey because the soy has worked out. I like to wait until I'm really tired of something that is working before I make adjustments.

Happy sampling,
Paula
