Potterheads

I sort of agree with Marie about the Hollywood happy endings, but I have to repeat that these are kids books. I my opinion, the book has to have some kind of uplifting, happy ending, even if it is something bittersweet like the end of Charlotte's Web, which always makes me cry buckets, speaking of tears. If JK kills off Harry or one of the other favorite characters, maybe there will be some other place or way that they exist.

I've also heard other authors say that they didn't know what the characters would do, that once they started the story, it kind of takes off on it's own.

"I'm thinking she didn't realize these two characters would die until she wrote it. Since book seven isn't finished yet, I'd say it's not Harry - afterall the hero can't die until the very end, if he has to die at all. (not saying he wont' die, just that he isn't one of the characters she is referring to in the interview)."

The problem with that is that she says she had the final chapter written before the first book. So she always knew how it would end.

Yes, Christine, she knows how it will end, but she doesn't know all the details. That's why she was so upset about Sirius dying, she didn't realize he would die, even though she knows how the overall story goes. My thought is that regardless how the last chapter goes, there were two characters that she didn't realize would die, who she has now killed off.

OK, my son and I are so addicted to Harry Potter, I just have to repond to this thread. I believe Dumbledore is really dead. My friend and I have a theory that Sanpe is deep down a good guy, because Dumbledore trusted him, and Dumbledore does not make mistakes. Snape somehow got back into Voldemort's good graces in order to get information about the evil side to help Harry and Dumbledore defeat Voldemort. Snape has to act like he is loyal to Voldemort at all costs. Also, Dumbledore and Snape had worked out a plan beforehand, that if it was necessary, Snape would kill Dumbledore if he needed to protect his identity about being on Dumbledore's side. Basically, Dumbledore was prepared to die as a sacrifice. Does any of this make any sense? I am probably completely off base, but we've got to have our theories until we are all put out of our misery when book #7 finally comes out.

Okay, is anyone else getting all emotional about this?:) The books are just so darn good that I don't want them to end.

I found a copy of the article on line - Rowling said -

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "

I guess we'll see... You make a good point. It'll be very interesting...

I'm looking forward to the last book, but like Shelley says, it's going to be tough to see the series end. I have really enjoyed these books. My kids laugh at me as I'm more into them then they are (teenagers are too cool, you know). But, as they laugh at me for much more than that, I just shrug it off.

I met a 30-something man this weekend, who after having a hard time in school, serving in the marines, dropping out of college and working several years was finally diagnosed as bipolar with learning diabilities. He always hated reading, until his medication helped control his problems. He is so proud now that he has read all the Harry Potter books. And loved them, I might add. The 12 year old boy with us said the books are whack. Guess whose opinion I agree with. These books are some of the few I have read a second or third time. And I guess I better start again so it's all fresh next July.

I have to agree with the point of view that they're children's books, ultimately. Maybe a bittersweet ending, but I would be disappointed--and pissed off--if it's a dark, depressing ending.

And just to add the disgruntled point of view to this discussion, ;) the last few books have been slowly but steadily pissing me off, with the Half Blood Prince being the worst for me. Not because she killed Dumbledore--I had guessed that was going to happen. My problem is that I keep feeling like she is violating the rules of her own world to come up with solutions and new tricks to explain things. (eg, horcruxes suddenly appearing in this last book.) It makes me angry because I feel it's sloppy and cheap writing, and not at all true to the wonderful stories in the first few books. I will read the last book--I want to know what happens--but I am dreading the way that she will probably write it and I wish she would just get it over and done with.

Interesting theories. I have to admit that I was so upset at the ending of the last book, that I have stopped reading the books. Before that I was addicted to the series -- but after the last book... I've gone back to my romance books where happy endings are a given.

May not be true to life, but in my opionion life is hard enough without having to watch it be harder in some book or movie. I must admit that the knowledge that she's planning to kill off two pivotal characters is daunting to me. I only hope it's not someone we've grown to know and love.

Needless to say, I won't be standing in line (like I was with the last book) to this the final installment.

For me, romance reigns supreme.:)

Here's another thought, upon further reflection. Has anyone thought that it might be Mr. and Mrs. Weasley? Mr. Weasley has almost been killed once -- or maybe one of the twins? A thought comes to my mind that it might be Neville -- we're given so many clues that Neville could have been the "one" to bring Voltemort down. So far, those clues haven't led us anywhere.

There's a difference, I think, also between pivotal characters and main characters. I suppose an author could think of main characters as also being pivotal, but not usually.

Oh well, back to work.:)

My thought process is this...
there's good and evil, in science fiction we have matter and anti-matter. Everything exists but separately. Mix them together and things start cancelling each other out.

Harry and Voldermort kill each other off and in the process the magical world is cancelled out leaving, alas just us poor muggles.

This would kill the unauthorized sequel.

Dave, that's a great point.

Is anyone here a Lord of the Rings fan? Because the series are quite similar, and LOTR ended in much the same way - destroying the ring got rid of the evil but also cancelled out much that was good... and so ended the Third Age of Middle Earth.

Marie

Ooooh, cool, me too!! I re-read the LOTR series at least once a year and when I finish the last book and always tempted to re-start the first! :)

Marie

I skip them, too. I think JRR Tolkien was a wonderful writer but I get the idea even he thought his poetry was icky, since most of them are prefaced by, "It's just a small sampling" or "It's not the same in the translation" or some other indication he knew they were crap.

:)

Hey everyone,

I think Hagrid will be killed, because he is ultimately expendable. He is also a father figure for Harry. Harry's mother scrificed herself for Harry, and then Dumbledore did the same thing. I think Hagrid will die, and possibly Neville or Ginny.
