PMS and eating

How do you handle the cravings to just EAT when your PMS is really, really bad? Some months it is just a mind over matter situation, but others, I just want SALT and FAT and I want it NOW. Sometimes I really want chocolate and I don't even LIKE Chocolate (I know that is because it is a diuretic, but yuck!). I am eating pretty healthfully the rest of the month -- not much sugar or white flour, sometimes none at all -- which I understand can make PMS cravings worse. Does anyone else have suggestions?

I have always had pretty bad PMS but I had a LOT of fertility drugs dumped into my system for a few years there and now I am in my 40s -- so all this adds up to making my symptoms more intense. I take my Midol and I work out except for the one or two days a month where all I want to do is sleep because of my PMS.

Thanks,

It's so funny that you post this because yesterday I was on a mission. I started out great (I to am PMSing) ate good all day long but when I got home from work I wanted some Cheez Its sooooo bad but I denied my self. Then I went to mall with my husband and daughter went to OutBack and ordered something clean it was the shrimp&chicken grilled with whole grain wild rice. Needless to say here comes the waiter with that little brown bread and butter thing that comes on that wooden chop block and the rest was history. I ate the whole loaf of bread, some of my food and almost all of my daughters mac and cheese which tasted so much better than my food. Then when I got home I ate the rest of the cheez its with a diet coke! LOL How about that???? Oh well.... But it all tasted soooo goood. Thank Goodness I dont do it tooo many times and thats what counts. So I say give in to those cravings as long as you dont do it all the time. Only when PMS rolls around. To top it off when I woke up this morning and went to the bathroom guess who was there to greet me bright eyed and bushy tailed????? You got it!!! With that said have a great day!!!!!!!

You said it Tobermory - Mind over Matter. Sometimes the matter does win though. Don't you hate hormones ?!?:mad:
Seriously if I want to win the battle & it is a battle some months I either brush my teeth & a real minty mouthwash or grab a strong piece of minty gum. When my mouth feels clean I don't want to eat - usually.

i crave cheez its about a week before i am due to get the mother nature gift! i will overeat most anything but salty and crunchy is the word for me LOL. i just try to keep mindful but i don't beat myself up if i slip either. i just work with it during a workout and keep water at my side all the time!! i usually feel much better if i fill up on water then i don't have room for food LOL.

I am crazy for the sweets when I am PMS-ing. Cookies mainly. I always forget where I am in my cycle so I get blindsided every time. This past month I made it through mind over matter with plenty of rest and relatively clean splurges... whole grain waffles and sugar free syrup was one of them. We'll see how I do next month.

I'm 35 and I've noticed my PMS getting worse as the years go on. Extreme fatigue, headaches and some serious water retention. I often wonder why our bodies, our "temples" have to work against us like this. Just not fair!

A strange thing happened last month

Thanks for posting this thread, I always warn people not to get between me and my Super Premium Ice Cream from day 20 on!

Last month I was finding myself checking the calendar and thinking, 'where's the PMS?' I was really wondering because my PMS is as faithful as my cycle.

The only thing that I could think of that I'd done differently was kale related. I'd picked up one of those bags of pre-washed ready-to-roll kale and cooked it up. I'd been eating a big serving every day - all during my day 20 on week.... no PMS!

Last time I saw my gyn he told me that calcium could help and that I could take extra of my supplement if I felt the need but it didn't really seem to do anything. Maybe because the kale is food, and possibly the calcium is more 'available'?

I don't know. But you can be sure I'll try that again! Can't hurt.
