Hi everyone:

I know someone here knows where (online?) to get platemates, as I think they are called (you know, the little magnet weights that let you go from 15 pounds to 17 or 18 by fixing them onto your 15 pound dumbell).

Can you remind me of the site/store please?

Also, what type of dumbells can these be fitted onto?

Thank you so much for your help, mil gracias

I think www.fwonline.com has them. I also found them locally at a store that sells workout equipment (machines and accessories). Have you tried a web search for "platemates"? I've discovered that I can sometimes find the best deals by doing a search and comparing total price.

The platemates were expensive but worth the money I spent. I got a pair of the hexes (1 3/4 pounds each) and a pair of the doughnut shaped ones (2 1/2 pounds each). The doughnuts are great for putting on the ends of the barbells and come off easily when you can't quite make in through that second set of crazy 8s!

Well, I went to google and found pages and pages on these platemates and after trawling through 9 pages of them, I have found that the cheapest deal is from http://www.qfac.com, cost of $18.95 per pair for the hex 5/8 lb set and cost of $19.95 per pair for hex 1 1/2lb set. Since they say you need one pair per dumbell say for bicep curls, that's $37.90 and $39.90 per 2 pair set respectively. Shipping from this site was $6, no tax charged.

Phew.....

Now I will probably spend 24-48 hours going crazy trying to justify the expense, then I will cave and get them I just know it, because I want to move up to the next weight range!!!!!

Hey Clare,

Before spending ~$40 for plate mates, consider going to Home Depot & getting some strong magnets. They aren't pretty but they work.

Or you can watch for people throwing away speakers. The magnets in the back of speakers aren't pretty either but I have a bunch that weigh anywhere from .4 lbs, .8 lb (4 of each) and they work great! I weighed them on my food scale to get the weight.

Deborah:

the speakers thing wouldn't work for me, no-one where I live throws useful itms like that away, but you know the home depot magnets thing just might work!

Thanks for the tip! And no, I never care about the unaesthetics of it all: I want effectiveness for the money!

Thanks again

Clare

I only use one platemate on each dumbell. I just hold the dumbell closer to the end with the platemate so it balances in my hand.
