Plate-mates vs. Plate weights

I'm getting ready to order and I'm curious if anybody has both and can give opinions on which they like best.:)

Hi Tina...I'll bump you up. I only have platemates which I love so I can't compare for you.

I'm still debating this myself. I like the idea of being able to microload in small increments with the paceweights, but then I feel that the dumbbells will get too bulky with the more paceweights I put on it. I think I've decided to get 2 pairs of 1.25 lb platemates and 2 pairs of 2.5's from fwonline.com. The price works out about the same as ordering the 18 paceweight kit, and I think the platemates will be a little more aesthetically pleasing to an already cramped space.

I have pace weights and I LOVE them!! They work well with my neoprene dumbbells as well as my other hex iron dbs. I also really like to be able to go up just one pound if I want to (shoulder work comes to mind), or I can use several to go up more weight if I want.

I think you can't go wrong either way, but I am totally happy with my pace weights and wouldn't trade them for the world!

Actually, you could go up just 1/2 pound if you want.

I have both, and while I haven't used the Paceweights yet (saving them for STS), I like the idea of microloading in a program like STS.

This is what I see as the advantages of each:
Platemates:
1) more attractive
2) easier to put on (they just stick right to the ends)

Paceweights:
1) allow for more gradual increases in weight (1/2 pound, using only one per dumbbell), so you can hit every 1/2 pound increment between dumbells that are 5# different. Going up in 1/2-pound increments makes the change barely noticeable to your body.

Neither of them should be used with neoprene or vinyl-coated bells, IMO, because the hold isn't as firm. Definitely don't try it with any over-the-head or over-the-face dumbbell postion, or you might be in for a heck of a bruise if the weights hit together and the magnetized weights are dislodged.

If you have neither, you could go either way.

Kathryn, I have Platemates which I love, but I was considering ordering the Pace Weights as well. Do you have rubber coated barbell plates, and if so, will the pace weights stick to them? TIA :)

I have Troy Lite rubber-coated plates, and I just tried the Paceweights on them. They hold, but not strong enough so that I would do overhead moves with them (they won't drop off on their own, but when I pull on them, they come off a bit too easily for my tastes).

I have plate mates. I just think they are easier to put on and off. No counting how many I need to add to equal to 1 or 2 pounds. I work out at 5:30a.m. and don't want to have to think to much!!:)
