Planks on the stability ball??

Neha

Cathlete
I was just wondering how safe it is to do planks on the ball?? coz during planks the entire weight is in the arms which r pushing against the ball, in othes words the ball has all of ur weight, i am really scared tht the ball will burst any moment, has anyone else tried it??
neha.

Do you mean planks with your hands on the ball? I doubt very much that the ball will burst. We were all sitting on them on the weekend, and that's your entire weight. No bursting!:)

yes i meant planks with hands on the stability ball, i guess whn u sit on the ball ur weight is distributed with some weight on ur legs resting on the ground. is it still ok..just curious...coz they r defi harder on the ball, just wanted to try thm.

Yes, but when you do a plank, some of your weight is on your feet. Unless you're somehow levitating:p I'm sure you'll be fine.

Most of the planks on the stability ball that I have seen... your feet on ball and hands on the floor..... Rhonda

It's important to have an "antiburst" stability ball if you are doing any kind of weight work on the ball. I've heard of balls bursting under people doing heavy chest presses, and them breaking both arms. I think most balls nowdays are antiburst so they will withstand a lot of pressure (my Dura Ball Pro is antiburst up to 1000 lbs. And they give them to baby elephants to play with!). Others will leak slowly if punctured rather than just popping. It is possible, though, to get a cheap stability ball that is not antiburst or slow leak. Of the three stability balls I now have, one is most definitely not as sturdy as the others (maybe I should intentionally pop it, just for fun, since I never use it anymore).

I agree with Kathryn, get an anti-burst ball if your going to do full body-weight or use any type of dumb bell, weighted ball, anything that adds weight. I've had the normal ones burst before, (before the anti-burst) came out. The normal one will shoot out from under you, if it pops, you'll be on the floor, with the wind knocked out of you, brused, and maybe broken in places. This was actually how I broke my tail bone a few years ago. I was doing crunches on a firm ball, and someone had it before me who had something sharp in a pocket. I didn't know, After 2 crunches I here SHHHH and next think I know, is I'm flat on my back, with the wind knocked out of me, and my butt is on fire. As since with a crunch your at an angle, your bottom hits first then your back and when you here SHHH there is no saving yourself. As it seems shoots away about the same time you here it.

But having a sore behind is one of the worst things, you can bend down, you can't sit, you can't stand, and you can't lay down without it hurting. But on a good note got a cheap re-arrangement of my tailbone which was actually something that I was thinking about having done. As my tail bone staight out instead of went down like a normal one, and just rolling back on the step/bench, like Cathe does in PS or S&H, was nearly impossible for me then as my tailbone was out instead of tucked under. Now I can do it, without the pain.

I have the Core Secrets ball, also. It looks burst resistant to me (though I don't see any info with it that states it). It's certainly sturdier than my "fit ball," but not as sturdy as my Dura Ball (which is very firm, almost too much for some uses). I definitely feel safe with the Core Secrets ball.

thanks i feel a lot better now, whr did u get the dura ball from, how much does it cost? do u think its a god investment now tht i aready have a core secrets ball?
neha.

I don't remember where I ordered it from. I'd just do a search on Dura Ball and see what sites come up (you might get different prices as well). If you have a Core Secrets ball already, I think that's fine. But if you want an alternative, and a ball with a different feel, then a Dura Ball is great (though pricier than most balls). I think it's worth it.
