Pilates questions

Cathlete
Hello all you wonderful Cathe-ites! I hope you are having a great summer.

I'm getting a handle on how to fit yoga into my rotations--I finally settled on short daily sessions after my Cathe workouts and one long session/week as my main workout. After starting yoga, I just don't feel good until I've done at least a little after a workout--it feels so good to stretch out all that Cathe has fried.

Anyway, I'm trying to get more into Pilates. I'm looking for suggestions for workouts as well as comments on how/how often you fit it into your rotations. For example: should I focus on Pilates one week and yoga the next? Or should I substitute Pilates for a weight workout on some days? How often do you need to do it to see results?

As you can see, I need help. Actually, it could be reasonably argued that I am beyond help, but that is subject for another post;-) .

Have a great day, and thanks in advance for your suggestions. You guys are the best!

I try and fit my yoga in on rest days or maybe add 20 min once a week(if that week I am not doing yoga on my rest day) Does that make sense??:) I don't do Pilates anymore, but if I were to add in into my workout schedule I would do it with cardio. Probably after cardio. If you are doing mat work for pilates I think Moria Stott (Stottpilates.com) has really good beginer dvds.
On a personal level, I started Pilates, was bored because I advanced quickly, needed to work out at home, and there really are very few advanced pilates dvds out there. I then progressed to yoga, got great results and loved the way I felt afterwards! Rodney Yee and David Swenson continue, after about 10 years to constantly challenge me. Bryan Kest is also good but he has not put out an advanced workout for about 10 years.

That's what I do..short sessions especially on cardio days and my rest day is usually a power yoga DVD. I've only done Bryan Kest and Eoin Finn yoga. I recently got the Sedona Series by Mark Blanchard for my dh. So, I'd like to try those out as well.

Since pilates isn't as much about stretching as yoga, but more about the core I have in the past done pilates in place of ab work. Not for all my ab work though. If you get the MTV Pilates Mix it's short and works your core good. I didn't like it at first, but found when I really concentrated and braced my core I could really feel it.

HTH!

I like to do pilates in addition to my daily workouts. I try and add pilates 2 - 3x's per week, as a treat to myself for all of my hardwork. So to answer your question, I don't just do pilates as a workout, unless it's an off day, then I'd just do pilates, but mostly, I add it to the other workouts I do as a nice stretch & ab workout.

I really like the Windsor Pilates tapes. You can rent them at the library or try to find them at FlicketyFit.com

I have recently added Pilates Group Reformer Classes (www.reformingny.com) to my exercise routine. I am doing these classes 2x a week and hoping to do more of my home-pilates dvds. I would recommend Sarah Picot's dvds:

I think she is an excellent instructor. I also like some of Mari Windsor's dvds. I am not sold yet on the Stott Pilates DVDs - I purchase a few of them and wasn't that crazy about them. But you should try your library to see if you can rent before you buy.

Good Luck.
