Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B November 1, 2026

We did a local park walk this morning for 1 hr 20 min. its hilly and quite uneven with gravel, rocks, roots and lots of fallen leaves. my back gets sore and now so does my hip. i see orthopedics next week, a week from today. feels like i will never get there. i always walk with poles. its a little extra calorie burn and definitely keeps my arms moving. ive used poles for 20+ years. they give extra stability, burns a few calories and keep my hands from getting puffy. ive always had that problem and used to keep my hands higher when i hiked but using poles serves multiple purposes.

so United health care owns the medical group where my primary care people work. that alone is a crazy conflict of interest. this year the group stopped taking orders from "outside" their network docs, even if you got most of your care thru them. if they got orders for an xray or CT scan from "outside", they just tossed them. didn't even tell the docs who ordered the tests. it was up to patients who tried to make appts for the ordered tests to get orders re sent elsewhere, after you figured out who could do the ordered test under your insurance plan. . so instead of using a handy facility 5 minutes away that's part of my primary care network, i need to go to the hospital a good distance away and my only option unless i switch to a different physician in their network which is not convenient. health care needs a major redo!!

i used to make bread all the time but we ate more sandwiches then. i made dough in the bread machine and finished it manually. i like bread especially home made but switched to famous Daves bread and am happy. we dont eat enough to make it anymore. i weigh 20-25 lbs less than i did then too. not all due to bread but i eat less than i used to and so it was an all over reduction in intake.

TGIF! It probably doesn’t make much difference that it’s Friday to all you retired ladies, but it sure does to me. Whew, what a week. Nothing horrible, just very, very intense. My brain was mush last night, LOL. I didn’t feel capable of counting reps, so I ditched the weight workout and did some relaxing yoga!

Carolyn – good work with RWH Legs.

Judy – Nice job with your Peloton workouts and PT work. I guess the PT work is going to be a lifelong thing? My sister still struggles with sciatica too.

Valerie – your walk sounds lovely. I’m sorry it hurts your back and hip. My hands get puffy if I do long walks in the summer, but not in the winter. I’ll walk for a bit with my arms up over my head, LOL. United Health Care sucks. Excuse my language, but it really does. We’ve had the same problems, had to find new primary care docs, etc.

Hi to Cathy.

Backtracking on Wednesday I did STS Disk 2, Thursday I shopped but did do My LMR2 Cardio Combo, then today I did STS Disk 3.

Valerie I have a chocolate issue, but unless I’m traveling it’s not bad. I put dark cocoa powder in my breakfast smoothie, but most days that’s it. I could never eat one bite of chocolate a day. It’s been a long time since I did McDonald’s. In high school we could leave at lunch and had time to go hit the strip which at the time was McD’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Penguin Point (Chicken) and Burger King Chef. We ate so healthy‍♀️ The health system is SO messed up. With the new rates even more people are dropping insurance. My sister has been messing with their budget to make sure they stay under the cap and keep their subsidy. As it is the deductible will be so high that they are really just paying for catastrophic care. We are lucky that we both worked for the state and has access to that insurance still.

Carolyn like chocolat, I have an issue with bread. Those are my two big food cravings!

Judy I’m glad you were able to get some relief from your pain.

Shannon I hope you find a solution for cardio.

This morning I had another doctor’s appointment. This one was my annual with Primary Care.

I also have United Healthcare, but I haven’t encountered any of the problems that you have. It’s offered through the State Health Benefits as a part of my retirement. I’ve had the same primary care doctor for over 20 years. United Healthcare doesn’t own the medical practice. Most practices in Georgia are a part of one of the local networks as is the one where I go, rather than a national network like United Healthcare. Emory Healthcare, Piedmont, and Welllstar are the major networks here. I do agree that our healthcare system needs some major improvements.

Judy, great job with the Peloton walk, PT, Peloton Upper Body, and 10 minute ride. I didn’t get my blood work done ahead of my appointment this time. I try to do that so that my doctor has the results at my appointment.

Valerie, because I make my bread from fresh milled flour it has all parts of the wheat retained, unlike whole wheat from the store. It’s another component of my whole grain diet. Overeating it would be very uncomfortable with all of that fiber! It tastes good and is also good for me.

Shannon, I hope that you enjoy your Friday!

Cathy, great job with the STS workouts and LMR2 Cardio Combo.

I'll bet your bread is wonderful Carolyn. i love good bread.

we are finally going to catch up on the rain we've been lacking, or at least that is the promise. it was rainy and windy today but more is coming over the weekend and at least the next week. it isnt dry at all now but the yearly total is low so it's good if we can catch up. last year the snow pack was ridiculously low and everyone hopes this year will be better. the slow snow melt in spring and summer keeps things green and tones down forest fires. .
i did a 30 min spin and then a 40 min weight workout.

i used to get lunch things at Wendys and jack in the box. i used to look for a grilled chicken burger or salad or something Wendys had. maybe a baked potato? haven't been to any of those places in ages. we dont eat out often but when we do its Thai. i love love Thai or Vietnamese food and have not been good at making it myself. Indian food is another I only eat out. the curry smell gets stuck forever in my kitchen when i do it myself. restaurant prices are another place where price inflation has been stunning. Lunch is no longer a bargain. went to a mexican place for lunch with friends and every entree was $20+. with tax and tips and water to drink, lunch for four was way over $100. if we had sloshed down a bucket of margaritas its understandable but no alcohol at all.

cathy i found if i give myself a small piece of dark chocolate every day the craving stays settled down. there was no fast food when i went to high school!. Yes, Im THAT old. we had a closed campus anyway, and couldnt leave the building without special permission.

This morning I did JS One Mile of Motivation, 15 minutes, 95 calories burned, average heart rate 112, and maximum heart rate 150. Then I did LMR Lower Body Foam Rolling for 18 minutes.

We didn’t have open campuses when I was in high school. School lunches were 15 cents and it was usually a good meal. 15 cents!!

Valerie, great job with spinning and upper body weights.

Have a great day everyone.

Today I did Body Max 2 step and Step Boss Bonus Abs.

I was in high school late 70’s and if we could drive or get a ride, we could leave. There was also a diner within walking distance. I had my license fairly early in my sophomore year. My sister was 6 years later and I believe they closed lunch after her freshman year.
Wow Carolyn 15 cents! Did anyone else get creative with their lunch money? By 6th grade, we had a fast line, with burgers and cookies, and I did that and pocketed the rest. I walked to dance class once a week after school and used it to buy books and makeup (that I wasn’t supposed to wear)

So has anyone else gone to a restaurant that has separate prices for cash and credit? Went to one in NC and it’s noticeably cheaper. I rarely go out to eat, but my sister said it’s pretty common there.

Yesterday I did a 45-minute Peloton walk and 15 minutes of stretching/pt work. Today I did a 45 minute Peloton Full Body strength workout.

Valerie-Great job with your park walk. Around here we have Henry Ford Health, Trinity, Corewell Health and U of M. Henry Ford recently took over Ascension-Providence, which was the system that we were in before. We had Blue Cross Blue Shield of MI insurance through my husband’s work and we kept it when he retired. So far we haven’t had many issues with it.

Shannon-I probably will be doing the pt work as a regular part of my routine, at least for now. Sciatica does seem to be a long term issue.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 2, your LMR2 Cardio Combo, STS Disk 3, Body Max 2 step and Step Boss Bonus Abs. I don’t think I’ve seen a restaurant with separate prices for cash and credit around here.

Carolyn-Great job with JS One Mile of Motivation and LMR Lower Body Foam Rolling.

carolyn maybe you are even older than I am!.. i think our HS lunch was 25 cents. i remember dont remember grade school. milk in the little cartons was 2 cents i think. . i used to brown bag it a lot unless they had something good for lunch. pizzaburgers were the big favorite. schools were so overcrowded that in JHS we got half an hour for lunch. they ran 4 "shifts" thru the cafeteria. brown bagging eliminated standing in line and then getting about 60 seconds to eat lunch. in grade school i could go home for lunch if i wanted, but junior and senior HS were locked down during lunch.

i havent seen different prices for cash/credit at restaurants. a lot of small businesses here dont take cc's unless you pay an extra 10%, swipe fee. they usually take a personal check though, which for a long time were not acceptable. there are some cashless businesses. i know people who dont use checks anymore at all. i dont like to mail checks. for the few times i use one i will only mail it inside a PO. handing a check directly to a merchant seems low risk, if they accept them.
