Good morning!

No plans for today except laundry, cleaning, puppy & dog stuff.

Keegan has reverted back to peeing in the house, vet gave me a script for potassium citrate, supposed to change the PH level of the urine to make it less or more acidic? not sure which. I am so confused right now with how to help him with this situation. John doesn't want to start him on something he will need to be on for life, This happened to Kelsey with thyroid meds she really didn't need when they thought it was her thyroid when it really was allergies. Once you start on thyroid meds, your thyroid no longer works, and she could not stop taking the meds. I don't this is this one of those kinds of meds, but will research.

Valerie, maybe you know a little bit about potassium citrate and what it does etc? Had Thai for lunch yesterday at a restaurant we have been wanting to try. Yumm!

Garance, vet is right, don't give too many "real" bones to Max. I had a dog one time ( back in the day when table scraps/bones were always given to dogs) that almost died when she had a steak type bone. We were very lucky. I never gave any dog a bone after that. More like they break up and can cause an obstruction. I hope this weather doesn't put a wrinkle in your family weekend plans. Golf etc.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy.

Will check in later....

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Deb, I would be confused, too. Maybe you should try googling the potassium citrate and see what it says--oh, and maybe google it with dog as well, if you don't get any useful information from just the compound. These are raw marrow bones, so there is no splintering. It's more like honing your teeth after sucking the marrow out. But he doesn't get one very often. Ds played golf yesterday, but his plans this afternoon look shaky because they are threatening thunderstorms. I am definitely going to see The Help this afternoon. Last night I had a totally sinful dish called Lobster mac--big chunks of lobster in a macaroni and cheese. I poured on spicy sauce. MMMM! Brought half of the mac home. Also a spinach salad and my usual Manhattan. Oh--yes, I saw the lineup for DWTS, and I will probably watch. Most interested in the women's soccer player--a goalkeeper.

Hi to anyone else who shows up!

**Yawns**

Good morning...

I can't even say that I am up at the crack of dawn. Dawn has not even woken up yet.

Garance, how was the movie? did it follow the book well? That lobster dish sounds great. Mac & Cheese is one of my favorites.

No plans today, except trying to get this house back in order. I can't believe what a mess it is. I may try to get a treadmill workout in today, we'll see. Sometimes a nap just wins out.

I did 36 minutes on the treadmill...whew, it was pretty hard after not doing anything for a while. Glad I did it though.

Hi Deb--

This morning I did Sweat Express II (58 min.).

Deb, the movie was really good and followed the book extremely closely. It's a long film and the acting is really (REALLY!) extraordinary. It's nice to see a film with such a strong cast of female characters and not an action film, but about real lives and a period in our past that we should try to remember. I loved it, and even though it was long, it felt like it went by quickly. The actresses playing Aibeleen, Minnie, and Hilly were really spot-on, and I liked Emma Stone as Skeeter although I didn't quite see her that way. By the way, I googled that potassium citrate for dogs and it sounds like it's specifically made to address those stones Keegan develops. Good for you on the treadmill workout! Now go nap.

Hi to anyone else who shows up!

Hey,

Nothing new around here, except John had an episode last night, and a pretty bad one. I sure hope when he goes to the ENT on Thursday that they are able to figure out something for this. He can't live like this, it's like a time bomb inside him that he never knows when it will go off. Starting Keegan on the potassium citrate later, if the drugstore got it in today. They had to order it. I hope this helps works to help him "hold it" better.

I actually did a treadmill workout yesterday, I think I already posted that, woo hoo. No workout this morning though. Up 2 other times last night for puppy stuff, and now up for good. Someday she will sleep throught the night and I can start back with am workouts. Hope it's soon.

Garance, maybe I can get my cousin tol go with me to see the movie. Is it "academy award" material? You would be a better judge of that since you see all the movies out there.

Hi to Josie, Joan, Valerie & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

I did all my workouts as I planed and finally went to see "The Help". My DD and I loved it and I agree with Garance's comments.

Deb, I'm glad that you got to workout at least for 1 day.

Hi Valerie, Cathy and Joan,

I will be back later.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 22 for ch, sh, tris (43 min.). I guess the reason why this one goes by so quickly is that the dropsets (10-10-10) are really fast. Sure brought up my heartbeat.

Deb, yes, this is definitely Academy Award caliber acting, and I bet there will be several nominations. I'm tempted to say that this is a women's film, but when I went to see it, there were several men--maybe there with their wives? Gosh, I sure hope they can help John. It must be scary for both of you.

Glad you liked the film, too, Josie. I also found myself teary every now and then, especially at the end when Aibileen is fired and the little girl is so heartbroken.

Cathy, if you have a chance, let us know about those wildfires.

Hi to Joan and Valerie!

I'm back... tho we really didn't go far this weekend.
Deb, I don't know what potassium citrate will do to urine pH. there are certain stones that form in alkaline urine and others that form in acid urine. and most people or dogs don't form stones at all! sometimes when urine gets too concentrated, stone formation is more likely because the substances that form stones are in higher concentration. but getting a dog to drink more is probably hard to do.
Hope DH gets some relief. I think there are numerous methods to treat but no guarantees so it's trial & error. does he have some warning so if he were driving he'd be able to get to the side of the road? or would he be able to continue?

I'm looking forward to the movie too, but, as usual, will wait til it's on disk. I will do much better with subtitles.

workout wise, I took saturday as a rest day but lots of yard work. saturday we did yard work but I also did GS chest triceps. did almost all the pushups on my toes so I will say that came back pretty quickly. pushups are always hard for me but I think they have great benefits so like them or not, I do them. monday we did a fast 23 mile ride, with hills. less than 2 hours. today, yoga so far and will do something else later.

Our stupid neighbor (pretty sure I know who) set off a bunch of illegal fireworks last night at midnight. woke us up big time, and I called 911. can't believe anyone, let alone an adult, would blast off that stuff when everything is tinder dry. we watched a bad brush fire not far away on the news last night, ignited by kids with bottle rockets. bunch of homes almost toast. our stupid!! neighbor does this a few times a year but usually not when things are so dry. he sets them off and then stops before anyone can ID for sure where it comes from.

Hey,

I'm here but have to rush around to get ready to go. Last night was on a very established forum that I have gone on for years. The "owner" posted a video that I started to watch. All of a sudden my computer froze, wouldn't do anythin! YIKES NOT ANOTHER VIRUS!! I was so upset last night, I couldn't do anything on it, run the virus scan or anything. I have so much dog club stuff to do before the trial this weekend, and we have new classes starting Monday, all is on my computer. So I get up this morning, thinking I need to make an apt with those idiots from WebRoot to do another $150 virus clean up, and how am I going to get that done before Sat? I am messing around with the computer, and find that the "right click" thing on the mouse works, just not the left click. DUH...it was the mouse that crapped out, not the computer. WHEW! *wipes forhead*. Switched it out with John's mouse and it works fine now.

Anyway, that is what I have been doing this morning. Kylee slept for almost 6 hours! Yay.

Sorry for the rushed post, but I have to get dressed and get to work now...later!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58 min.).

Nothing worse than computer problems in this day and age. We are all so dependent on technology that it's hard to believe what life was like 20 years ago when we were still fledglings with computers.

Boy has it been raining here. It just keeps coming down--I guess leftovers from Lee. I hope Katia just heads off north because there's so much flooding around here.

Valerie, even though you have subtitles, the voices are still audible? With The Help, I just cannot imagine not hearing the southern accents and with the maids, the dialect, which is also part of the way it's written.

Hi to anyone else who shows up!

Absolutely, the dialogue is just as it normally is and the subtitles are printed across the bottom. you can listen to it and if you miss something you can see what was said, so you can use it when you need it or ignore it. We showed BIL how to do it for Alice in Wonderland. Lots of strange words in there and he was amazed at how much he'd missed. Dh likes it too.

Movies are made for theaters. there are often inaudible things said in the background maybe it was audible in a theater on a special sound system, but on a TV you wouldn't even know something was said. and with subtitles you " hear " it. I never can understand English , Irish, Scottish. new york and southern accents can be tough too.

Did LBB yesterday after yoga in the morning. this morning an almost 2 hr bike ride. trying something new, not as long as we'd planned but long enough. warm and dry here. I actually would like to see some rain. we actually have pretty dry summers but it will get wet soon enough.

computers, love them, hate them. such a headache but impossible to get along without anymore. I do OK until something doesn't work and then I get crazy. everything changes so fast, if you're not working in the field I don't think it's possible to keep up.

Morning!

I think fall has arrived, it's very cool here, it was nice having a window open last night and no AC on. Very refreshing.

John goes to the ENT today, keep your fingers crossed that they come up with something for him.

Same ol' same ol' here. Kylee did sleep for 7+ hours last night. The trick is to not let her sleep at all from the time we get home from work until bed time. That makes it hard to do anything like watch TV or read, since you have to watch her ALL THE TIME! She is such a vixen.

Well, off to get ready for work.

Deb, nothing like finding the solution... all you need to do is use 100% of your time keeping the puppy awake & playing. good luck with that! Hope John has a good outcome with ENT.

I don't ever take many supplements, my diet is good and mostly I think it's a bunch of hype. I take one calcium/ vit D & take extra vitamin D in the winter when we have no sun.
I read an article in the last CSPI ( center for science in the public interest aka the food police) newsletter about older people and protein that is making me rethink. apparently to build or maintain muscle, older people ..60 and up... may need more protein than younger people. we are less efficient and need more to build muscle/strength. especially the amino acid leucine. they took info from a variety of sources.

Not "selling" anything here, but wondering if I've been doing the best thing. I could easily shuffle foods to get more protein soon after after exercise. I know people use protein shakes for this purpose but I question their safety since the source of protein components may be china and I don't trust their system at all for safety. consumer reports had a report showing significant heavy metal contamination in some well known products. I'm thinking of maybe more eggs & cottage cheese, that kind of thing. I used to be totally vegetarian, but eat some chicken & fish now but not much. I guess that's why I found this so thought provoking.

I don't want to go on here forever but if anyone is interested I'll try to get a link to the article and see what you think.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 24 for back and bis (43 min.). Finished meso 2 and on to meso 3 next week.

Was supposed to meet my Jacob's Pillow friends for lunch today to give them refunds on that final performance we missed because of Irene. Only one friend showed up, so we stopped by the other woman's place after finally going ahead with our lunch, and found her still in a nightgown. She has some sort of skin allergy and doctors don't really know what plant is causing the problem, but she's now on prednisone and some other medication that makes her very sleepy. It's not even a contact thing, and she's had her lawn checked over for poison ivy, and none there. I really would not want to take prednisone, but the other option was an ointment that would take a couple days to really get relief from. Ugh! Nothing worse than itching all over.

Deb, I hope they find some sort of help for John. Yesterday felt fall-like, but today feels finally more summery, with the sun at last coming out.

Valerie, I think I get enough protein because of all the meat we eat, and it definitely is not from China, since it's raised right here on the farm. I'm making pork chops tonight with apples, applejack, and cream. Yummy recipe!

Actually it was the timing and amount of the protein. I get plenty of protein like most people, but not for breakfast. I am very carb heavy especially breakfast. and that was the point of the article.
the protein that builds muscle in older people( yes, that's us) has to be eaten shortly after the exercise, not 8 hrs later. and there was something about minimum 30 gms of protein being important. I have oatmeal, fruit & milk maybe 12 gms. I eat protein containing foods, and typical vegetarian combos but not usually 30 grams. I'm big on whole grain/bean salads, nuts, tofu, PB, etc. when we eat chicken or fish I probably do but that is NOT right after exercise. I will see if the article has a link. I respect this publication or else I would probably not pay much attention to this. I don't eat pork, beef, most seafood, etc for around 35 years. I'm kind of muscular so maybe this is just a bunch of baloney.

Happy Friday!

Busy weekend for me with the dog show for 2 days and a play tonight.

I will try to check in to see what everyone is up to.

just yoga yesterday. got awfully warm and is supposed to be even hotter this weekend. active day but no more formal exercise.

we are getting ready for a 2 week vacation. next weekend we go to a 90th B-day party for an aunt. she's a sweet lady but I'm starting to think jumping off a bridge would be preferable to assisted living. she can't see, can barely hear. can't hang onto her pee anymore which keeps her tethered to her room much of the time. someone will have to do so real convincing before I ever sign up for that kind of existence. her big activity yesterday was washing her socks. we have to attend a party including dinner. it's like bad cafeteria food. usually I can find something to get by but this place can't even serve up salad. bottled dressing, iceberg lettuce. I'm going to sneak in a jar of vinaigrette so I can eat a salad since I know the rest of the stuff will be inedible. everything tastes like it came out of a box.

Lots to get ready for vacation but can't do most of it this far ahead.

this weekend will be HOT here so will do a ride at least once day.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did TLC, both workouts (60 min.).

I will probably go to see Sarah's Key this weekend. Had my annual flu shot this morning. I wanted to do this before getting on an airplane with all that recycled air. I have also seen the trailer for Contagion a couple times so I guess that has my germophobic nerve endings tingling with anxiety.

Hey, Josie, did you have that power outage that hit southern Cal? Looks like a totally stupid mistake.

Valerie, do you really have to go this party? Sounds like an ordeal you would like to avoid.

Have a great weekend everyone!

It will be good to see Betty and the other family who will be there. It's just a terrible reminder about getting old and the decline that will eventually happen. and I dislike the food! it's from 4-7 so pretty late for dinner after. It's what I call "old people food". meat with gravy and mashed potatoes, mushy vegetables, and iceberg lettuce with french or ranch dressing. I haven't seen Betty for a while though and that really is the main reason to go.

Lynda, it seems like everyone I know has had a bad cold especially people who were traveling. Take hand sanitizer & use it often. maybe it's the recirculated air, but I think it's the surfaces you touch and then rub your nose or eyes. Are flu shots especially early this year? I don't remember a big push on flu shots so early before. the signs and ads for shots are up all over here too.
