Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/28

did Cyclemax yesterday but not enthusiastically. did a lot of garden work first, grocery shopping, bill paying , and by 3:30 I was already tired so I did the 40 min express one. that was enough.
then tried a new dinner recipe, a pasta dish with gorgonzola and surprisingly it was a success. neither DH nor I care for gorgonzola but I had a chunk I'd bought to try with a new dish, polenta and greens. didn't care for it so I have this hunk of expensive cheese left. I went very light on the cheese and it was good and very simple. overall not a fan of gorgonzola...strong and musty and easily overwhelming.

I sure like my yoga class but yoga, more than most activities , varies all over the map. the class I do is strength focused along with flexibility. It is a hard class and I am challenged every class. it's not boring "same old, same old". IMO it would be hard to learn yoga "right" or enjoy from a disk even if it's Cathe. so I skipped buying those.

The moves from S&G that are tough for me are the burpees and the plank one, sliding your leg on the disk. they're hard for me and make that workout more challenging for me overall.

Hi Ladies,

Today is my last day at work before I go on vacation. All of my stuff is ready to be packed in our bags. My DD decorated the bags so that we can easily identify them and they don’t get lost in the hundreds of other black bags on the gear trucks. She waited to the last minute to decorate and the paint needed to dry. We are leaving tomorrow.

Garance, that saying sounded a bit naughty to me, or maybe I just have a dirty mind ;)
I had a roommate that was worst than me. She was a researcher and had only been in LA for a few months and her English was a bit rusty. So, one day she came home and told me that her boss had pissed himself and I said WHAT! Her boss had said that he was pissed off and she took it the wrong way, I could not stop laughing and I almost pissed myself ;)

Deb, the ride starts on June 3rd and ends June 9th.

Hi to Valerie and Joan!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41 min.).

Josie, "a lick and a promise" means a brief swipe with mop, duster, rag and a promise to do better the next time--or at least that's what my mom told me. Hmm, I will let my mind wander into naughty territory.......ahhh! Your friend's understanding of p.o. is hilarious.

Deb, why don't you substitute one of the shorter premixes on Turbo Barre for yoga? I agree--don't like yoga, but I never had a good class. Took two and my mind just wandered all over the place. Could not get that peaceful feeling I was supposed to have.

Hi to Valerie and Joan!

Good morning,

I slept in today, John got up with the dogs around 3:40 and the next thing I knew the alarm was going off at 5:45. Heaven. I guess my body was telling me I didn't want to do yoga or any other substitute.

Valerie, those planks, burpees, mountain climbers and any other name Cathe can come up with are killer for me too. I try to do every other one, because I go a lot slower.

Garance, looked at the "shorter" pre-mixes of Turbo Barre....52 minutes is not short for me! I save that long of a workout for Sunday when I don't have to go to work. Some of us aren't retired yet...hee hee...:D

Josie, good luck on the ride!!

Besides Josie, anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Yoga had a different teacher yesterday so our regular instructor took the class with us. t She focused on abs and I'm happy to say it was pretty easy after Cathe's stuff. later did S&G. I've done that one more than any other and like it the best. I still have trouble with the traveling pushups so do reg toe pushups. just don't have much open floor space in the room. some of the transitions are too fast and I miss the first rep but get the rest. if there's time I add one at the end but usually there's another fast transition!

Deb, that's the way it should be, alternate who gets up to handle puppy issues. no reason for both people to lose sleep. Turbo barre I like the least. only did it maybe 2-3x. I am not a dancer and won't be. makes me feel like an elephant.

Linda that's what my mother also told me "lick & a promise" meant. something done quickly and not completely with a "promise" to do better the next time.
my yoga class I'm thinking about the move she's showing us /telling us to do, she always is telling us where to place parts, where we should be feeling it etc. I am thinking about where every body part is, and where it's going next. no time for random thoughts for me, it totally gets my attention. we don't do much sitting and "meditating" or anything. very active class. but there are so many many interpretations of yoga it could be hard to find what you like.

Josie...good idea on the luggage. It is a sea of black carry- on bags that all look identical. I put bright pink survey's tape on the luggage handle where it can't be missed. losing luggage for a trip like you're doing would probably end the trip. you'd never be able to replace all the gear in time.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did AT (56 min.).

Deb, I think on Turbo Barre, you could just stop after 30 min and probably have done the warmup and conditioning with 5 lb. dumbbells and the pink band. Just a guess, but this workout is so easy to divide up.

This weekend is Commencement, so on Saturday night we're going to dinner with the honorary degree recipients and on Sunday I will be in the procession and receive a public farewell. More hoopla. Hope it doesn't rain. Indoor graduation is really not fun.

I must move into a different office at the end of June--a place more off-campus--so I am trying to downsize--donate books, throw out files. Not fun, but also seems a bit liberating.

Enjoy the weekend ladies!

Good morning,

Going to my cousin's graduation at 10 this morning, then a luncheon to celebrate. She went back to college late and is graduating today. A 2 year degree, but hey, with her involvement in politics, her son, and taking care of both of her parents, I am so proud of her!

Garance, why are you moving to another office? I would think since you are retired, you would not be needing an office at all?

Valerie, it's great that you have a class that you really like. I have exercised alone for so many years, I don't even remember what it is like to be in a class. Believe it or not, John and I used to drive to the health club after work 3 times a week and take a step class together....I can't even believe we did that now.

Off for more fuel....take care,

DH and I used to run together. belonged to a gym too. but between his hours and my travel it became less and less possible. going to a gym took too much time. get dressed, drive there, work out, drive home, shower, dress, then drive to work. neither of us had jobs where we could go to work right from the gym. for running much of the year it's too dark in the morning to run before we had to leave for work too. so it was inevitable we'd get home equipment. we work out separately. don't like the same things, room is too crowded.

Did 30 on the treadmill. I'm pushing up my speed. I'm slow but can go sustained speed 4.3 to 4.4 mph, 2.5 % grade. it was very humid yesterday and I was really sweating. I used to go 4.5 but never regained that milestone after knee surgery. I might make it yet.

might do a bike ride today if it doesn't rain all day like yesterday.

Maybe I'm lucky to have found a fun class. started with one that was OK. just when I was getting bored with it, the owner closed one studio and consolidated classes in a new one and new teacher. she runs such an interesting class and knows her stuff! lots of interesting mixed age people, not all 20-somethings. every day is a surprise, not the same thing repeated endlessly and no big emphasis on the "meditation" . not a bunch of people chanting"om" in a dark room. this is more like an exercise class. I had tried yoga at home with tapes but didn't like it. it's not intuitive for me and I did everything wrong.
