Good morning,

We did a lot of weeding and mulching yesterday. Then we found out our next door neighbor passed away yesterday morning. He had pancreatic cancer and had been in and out of the hospital for a few months. So sad. We went and bought fruit, made a large platter with a dip that I usually take to parties etc. So sad.

This morning I planted 6 giant zinnias. These are the only annuals that I put in the ground. They make such nice cut flowers.

I hope to get a workout in sometime this morning. It is really overcast right now so maybe finish the mulching, hopefully before it rains, then a workout.

How is everyone's weekend going?

good morning Deb.. we had a garden day yesterday too, that plus washing the camper. it's a LOT of work. gets so dirty with dead bugs etc. plus we found a small leak that needs to get fixed.
also made some roasted peppers. so good and now I have a method. used to do them on the barbecue, charring them. my red dragon garden torch did a fantastic job in a couple minutes. could not believe how well it worked.

we planted a few shrubs to fill in spots. I do mostly perennial bushes, smaller plants. not many annuals. the deer( hungry devils) have completely changed their tastes to expensive plants. I felt safe with japanese maples since I've had them for 20 yrs without a problem, but this year they are eating them like candy. hostas were always a target but haven't touched them. the jap maples, 2 beeches, and some other dark red leafed plants have been targeted so I sprayed them with repellant spray again. too bad it stinks for people too. ugh! no idea why something they never touched has become so tasty.

were going to ride today but it's cloudy and very cool so maybe not.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Turbo Barre (74 min.).

My big party on Friday night was really special, with speeches about me, a great dinner, and a lovely gift of a special edition Plath book and the catalogue from the exhibition of her drawings last fall. Really lovely, and my boys were suitably impressed by everything they didn't know about their mom. About 70 people were there. We went out again last night to Mezze's and came home to watch the Celtics beat the 76ers.

I'm going out later this afternoon to buy some annuals, probably just State Fair Zinnias and nasturtiums to fill in spots open between my perennials.

That's about it. I did manage to clean house yesterday and go shopping today.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend everyone!

Hi,

I did one of the pre-mixes from Afterburn, it has the w/u, and intervals 6-19, cool down, stretch. I like these 5 intervals better than the first 5. I still can't see how anyone can do the whole thing.

We bought a new grill, John has been wanting one for a while now, so he got his Weber grill. Also got a new clematis, ours was pulled out by the trellis falling over in a wind storm this past fall and we tried to save it but it did not come back.

Garance, your dinner etc sounds lovely. So nice to be recognized after all you have done. Are State Fair Zinnias the large ones? I think that's what mine are...

Valerie, Cleaning out the camper doesn't sound like fun at all.

That's it for now...

Happy Memorial Day!

Still some HouseMax to do, and I want to make some treats for Keegan. I found a recipe that has ingredients that he can have. None of the commercial ones do.

Garance, are you having a cookout with your sons etc?

Anyway, how is everyone's weekend going?

Maybe a run/walk with my cousin at the track this morning, or if she doesn't want to, then a treadmill workout.

will check back later....

Wow. Linda that sounds WONDERFUL! your kids probably didn't appreciate all you'd accomplished but to hear if from many others, and have all those people show up in your honor is lovely! Congratulations!

and on a decidedly different topic... DH drove me nuts this morning. he can't sit still and was going to clean the jacuzzi tub now that we're done with it for the season. so ( without saying anything) he went in the kitchen, got a measuring cup and suddenly was screaming for a paper towels while in the laundry room. I was about to change the filter in the fridge but dropped everything to get towels. he grabbed a measuring cup with a crack in it and bleach was running all over not even sure where. so he threw the paper towels in the wide open waste basket after wiping the counter and left. the whole room stunk of bleach and I am pouring water and sponges all over trying to figure where he spilled bleach because the whole room reeked. so somehow it's all my fault because a plastic cup I use for measuring dry things like sugar had a crack in it and he didn't notice it or ask! took me half an hour to (hopefully) locate, dilute, and mop up the bleach because he really wasn't sure where it went.

this is on top of an ongoing fight we've had because my computer keyboard has some letters worn off and he can't use it! he's screaming at me to get a new keyboard but I don't bother. the letters ALWAYS wear off and after so many years I don't care and know what letters are where. how can anyone type for decades and not know what letters are where? I've had a dozen keyboards and they always wear off after a couple months.... so who's crazier here?

Valerie, all I can say is, it sounds familiar, same stuff, different couple!

I ended up doing 9 laps at the track, jogging every other one. A good workout. The HRM showed 37 minutes 208 calories...WHAT??? Went to Dick's and finally got a new one. Hopefully this one will be better.

Gave Kylee a bath, folded many loads of laundry, is this really a day off?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Deb, my older son and dil had to get back to California for work tomorrow, so they left today. My younger son wanted to see his friends for a cookout in Boston, so he left too. Just as well. They wore me out this past weekend. The kitchen was in a terrible mess the whole time because they never use the same glass twice and they love to make big breakfasts for themselves. I love seeing them, but am also reminded of how easy it is for them to have their own spaces away from us. I did go get a bunch of plants yesterday and I'm hoping to get them in later this afternoon, when the sun is on the other side of the house. Soooo--please don't let it rain until tonight! I'm making Chinese tonight with fresh chicken breasts, compliments of DH. Deb, good for you on the run/jog!

Valerie, it sounds like a major meltdown. Tell him to chill and stop nagging or use his own keyboard. Sheesh! I would be steaming. My sympathies.

Must start thinking about this piece I'm writing--due in August, getting paid.

the keyboard thing... we were updating our virus protection and he'd done his and the laptop and made a BIG FUSS about how HE HAD to do mine. (I don't care who does it!! I've done it for 15 years.) and then, after adamantly insisting HE had to do it, but could not tell what to type. didn't want me typing while he told me what to type... which would have been simple .... so we finally had to call tech service because I didn't know what he'd done and he could not explain it, and it turns out it was completed just fine. now it's a major FLAP because some of the letters are worn off on MY keyboard. his computer and the laptop don't get much keyboard use so aren't worn. mine always wear off. he is such a PITA sometimes.
thanks everyone ... just venting. just seemed so silly!! why should he care what my keyboard looks like?

congrats Deb on the workout. a new HRM? I never pay attention to those things for calorie burn. seems like it's just a guesstimate anyway. I pay attention to the heart rate so know I'm working hard enough.

Good morning,

Today I did one of the KCM's total body weight workouts. I am trying to do Fitness Fit's rotation that she made dedicated to Coach Sean. All of the cardio in it is a Cardio Coach workout. Although I did a run/walk at the track today, instead of the CC because my cousin wanted to jog together. 3 days down, 3 to go. Unfortunately she uses the Yoga workouts as one of the days, and I am not sure what I am going to do with that. I really do not like yoga. I guess I can try a very short pre-mix just to keep with the rotation.

Garance, did you get the plants in before any rain? We had some rain very early this morning, but not enough to do any good. It just made it more humid.

Valerie, I would get a new keyboard just to shut him up! But that's me. Yes, I like the HRM to keep track of my heart rate too. The calories is another thing to "track". I am a tracker of things, a list maker etc.. I have this chart on the counter in the kitchen for Keegan, it tracks his meds, weight, and PH. I know, anal retentive or what?

I feel so much better when I work out every day. I have to keep remembering that when I am making an excuse not to do it.

Off for more coffee and to let the little one out, who turned ONE yesterday! How time flies.

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Had a nice relaxing weekend, had my last ride on Saturday followed by a pot-lock lunch at Griffith Park. My DH wanted to cook some steaks on Sunday, so we had a small BBQ. We also laid out for about an hour to work on our tans .

Valerie, when my DH makes a mess, I tell him to clean it up himself. He used to do the same thing that your DH did to you, so I nipped in the butt and told him that I was not his gopher and also, that I would not tolerate him raising his voice at me. I’m blind but not hard of hearing ;) I also do not cook as much because I told my DH and DD that if they cook, they need to clean up after themselves. I used to come home to a sink full of dishes that they would just pile up. I like to cook in a clean kitchen and I clean after I make dinner, so there was no excuse for them to leave a mess. So, if I get home and there are dishes and a mess I do not cook.

Deb, I have been thinking of running again. I get so jealous when I see people run while I’m ridding. The calories that you burned at the track sound right. You loose 100 calories per mile regardless of the time and you did 9 laps which is 2.25 miles.

Garance, I bet your sons were so proud of you, sometimes kids take us for granted and don’t realize everything that we do. Congratulations!

Hi to Joan!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did S & G (52 min.). I was a sweaty mess by the end because the humidity here is UNBELIEVABLE and especially so for May.

I am with you Josie on kitchen cleanup. I expected my kitchen to be clean when I came home to cook at night. How quickly children forget! Although, in all fairness, my younger son did a load of dishes and put everything away on Saturday morning. I also didn't do any cooking on Friday or Saturday. But oh, those breakfasts--what a mess! Sausage, bacon, omelettes, coffee, juice, toast. Laughed out loud, Josie, when I saw nipped in the butt. Much more feisty than nipped in the bud.

Deb, I did manage to get my plants in yesterday afternoon. No rain whatsoever, confirming DH's belief that we never get a forecast, only a nowcast on the weather. I bought stuff for hanging plants today, and although they are threatening more stormy weather this afternoon, maybe I will get them done as well. I am thinking of getting Amy Bento's hip-hop walking workout and her weight workout over at Collage. Thinking......

Hi to Valerie and Joan!

Garance,

English is my second language and I get the sayings wrong. My DD getts a kick out of this.

Josie

DH usually isn't messy, he's almost too far the other direction. but he tries to control too much. to him, the issue was why I kept a measuring cup with a crack. I know not to use it with liquid and would have told him if I'd seen which cup he grabbed. but he didn't ask. the rules here are for him to leave dishes in sink/ counter top. he can't load the
dw right and I always have to re-do it. I'd rather do it right the first time.

I don't want to replace the keyboard. the keys aren't too big and have space in between them. some of the newer boards ( like our laptop) have giant keys, no space. I can't type on them. also.... they keep moving the "delete-end- home" keys, and it drives me nuts when they switch them around.

just an annoying day ...we got on each others nerves. he shampooed the rug in the process so I can't complain too much. of course, he's the one who dripped coffee all over, which is why it needed shampooing. so that's fair.

Did AT yesterday. that is a hard workout, the cardio part at the beginning about kills me. I have a high step not a standard step, so not a lot of room to maneuver. most of the toning stuff later on seems pretty easy compared to the cardio! wow. I can't do dips n that narrow a platform either so do them on a bench.

I've always been suspicious of calorie burn numbers... too individual. a big person could do the same workout and because of their size probably would expend more calories, as would going faster or slower. sometimes the numbers seem exaggerated and other times the opposite. so I try to keep my HR in the 125-140 range for most of the workout and let it go at that.

I seen it! I want the book as well as the three getting started. My back and ABS are weak. May the. Beginner is what I need

Good morning!

I did one of the pre-mixes from Slide & Glide. It has the whole cardio section, plus core and the stretch. Not sure what parts of this are taken out. Does she do some conditioning moves after the cardio? I guess I could go to the disk and look at the chapters..duh.

Josie, how long before the big ride?

Garance, I am the same with the kitchen, John cooks a lot, especially when we have company, and I just follow him around and clean up. We make a good pair in that way. He would leave it all until the dinner was done, and that drives me crazy.

Valerie, Keep the keyboard, if only to make a point LOL.

Renee, Welcome!

Off for more coffee and to get ready for another wonderful day at the office.

Take care,

tee hee "nipped in the butt" is better than the original "bud" .

Linda, your DH is spot on about the "nowcast" rather than forecast. so many times we realize that the forecast was totally wrong but they never admit, just go on like they had it right all along, and you're left wondering if what you heard a day or two ago was what you remember!

did yoga yesterday morning, then 35 on the treadmill after doing some garden catch-up. my basil is finally up! I planted it at least 3 weeks ago and was pretty sure either it didn't germinate or the slugs got it. planted another batch a few days ago. but surprise, it showed up yesterday, at least 10-15 tiny green spots. the slugs really mow it down when it's small so needed to get slug bait out. once it gets growing and a little height it will be OK. garden is looking good this year, much better conditions than last yr.

Wish DH could cook but no. not at all. he can clear plates and pour coffee but not much else. he likes food and is particular about what he'll eat, but is clueless with preparation. he came from a family where spaghetti-o's were italian food. but he has good taste. just doesn't like any "heat" which is where we differ.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body split on Total Body Trisets (56 min.).

Deb, on S & G, she does some leg work and biceps and back with the green firewalker band. It's pretty mild conditioning, though, so I think you get the best of the workout with the cardio and the core (and the stretch? I love the stretch on this one.). I looked at some of the clips for horizontal conditioning over at Mary's site (totalfitnessdvds.com). Looks totally boring to me with no music. Some of these moves Cathe has on her workouts and you are right, they are tough.

DH is an excellent cook, and will usually do some of it when we have guests, but he doesn't enjoy it as much as I do and he's so busy most of the time. He is definitely my butcher, though, and will pound out cutlets or de-bone chickens, or cut up meat for a stir-fry. He also does the cleanup after dinner, although I fuss a lot, wiping off counters, etc. because he does a "lick and a promise" job many times. (There's another saying for you, Josie. Have at it!)

So glad it cooled off here a bit. Big storm came through about 6 and it rained really hard. Nice today.

Good morning,

I just did 35 minutes of CC#3. Workout 5 of the Cardio Coach Dedicated week 1 done. Tomorrow is supposed to be a yoga workout from the LIS series. ugh. I hate yoga. Maybe I'll do Pilates or something like that instead. Have to blow the dust off an old VHS tape that I have .

Garance, did you decide on a new workout? I think the Horizontal Conditioning first workouts have no music, but the other clips I looked at did have music, which was pretty good. Not saying I would buy these, they look very hard, but interesting that there is no equipment needed. They would be good for travelling, if you had a way to play the DVD.

Valerie, I have a little pot of basil on my kitchen windowsill. "Lick & a Promise"....where do these sayings come from anyway?

Hi to Josie and the "MIA Joan"..LOL...
