Pentagenarians & Beyond! W/B 11/30

Good Afternoon all,

Today I did the legs, & abs from MIS..not bad, about 40 minutes including the w/U and stretch. I am really going to try to watch my diet, after all the indulgences from Thanksgiving.

Joan: I can understand why no one would want to decorate a tree after Thanksgiving dinner...too full and tired. That would be the last thing I would want to do! We put our tree up ( if we decide to have one), the 3rd week of December. I still can't believe you can do a workout at midnight! ..sounds like you had fun at the casino. We have 2 casinos nearby, one in Niagara Falls NY, and one in Niagara Falls in Canada...I have never been in either of them.

Garance: are you buried under those papers you have to grade? LOL

Linny: did you make it back from Black Friday?

Josie: where are you?

Have a great day!

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Kelly C-M's Cardio Sculpt (70 min.). I really like this workout.

I had to check back to the other thread to catch up. Yesterday was my day off, so I cleaned house, and yes, graded papers, and then we went out for sushi and/or Thai food with older son and fiancee because we really finished up the leftovers on Friday night.

Deb, I'm not sure how to describe what I do with the mushrooms, since I don't really have any measurements. It's one of those guess-and-by-gosh things I learned by watching MIL. But I will try. I wash and thoroughly dry 3 pkgs of mushrooms--a combo of regular white ones and baby bellas and gently saute them in melted butter. I leave them whole unless they are very large. I used a stick of butter and after that was pretty much absorbed and the mushrooms were getting tender, I threw in two more Tbsp. and when that was melted, floured the mushrooms with Wondra, salt, and plenty of freshly ground pepper. This creates a roux-like coating--at which point I douse them in maybe 3/4 of a cup of dry sherry, bring it to a gentle simmer, and watch until it gets glossy and syrupy. Then I throw in half-in-half and create a cream sauce. If it gets too thick, I put in some more sherry. That's about it, but I swear on my MIL's apron, they get snarfed up pretty fast.

I cannot believe I only have three more classes this week, and then I am DONE for a year with teaching. I have to plan on writing for at least three hours every day, and then research and reading, thinking for another three. I am sooo looking forward to this. Of course I still have another set of papers coming in, plus my lengthy seminar papers, so I am not home free yet.

Gosh, I haven't done MIS for ages and ages. I'm staying with my current weekly rotation of no-Cathe until STS. DH says I must be mad at her (hah!), but he doesn't mind Kelly and this all-alone Leslie is not her usual cackle-and-shriek.

No shopping yet, but at least I have some ideas after seeing my guys.

It's Monday!

Good Morning all!

Well it's Monday and I have to go back to work today:(...I guess it had to end some time. Today I did a 35 minute I-Tread. It's cold and rainy here today, but no snow! Yay!

Garance, those mushrooms sound lovely!. How great that you will be done after 3 more classes! You mentioned that your DH does not mind K-C and the "shriek-free" Leslie, where do you do your workouts? We still have some turkey left, not much though. We have been eating it for almost all meals except breakfast!.

Waving Hi to Linny, Josie and Joan:

Have a great day!

Hi Ladies,

I'm so glad that Thanksgiving is over with. I have dishpan hands from all the pots and pand that I had to clean this weekend. I'm very happy that I had both my DS and DD at home for the weekend.

I only got to walk on Saturday for one hour and last Wednesday I did the PUB. Today I did PUB again and it was very hard, my arms are still tired as Im typing.

I will be walking this evening with my cardio partner so that I can work off the extra calories from the weekend.

Have a great day everyone!

Josie

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Kelly C-M's horizontal premix on Cardio Kick Stepboxing (48 min.).

Deb, I do my workouts in the living room. When we had our carpets redone a few years ago, I had some big leftovers bound, and I use those to prevent wear and tear on the carpet. DH is out in the addition eating breakfast and reading the paper, so he hears whatever I have on.

Poor Josie! Since I do most of the cooking, I don't do any of the washing up. And since I decided to use my mom's china, which she inherited from my grandma, so it's really old and very beautiful (Bohemia with pansies and gold around the edges), the dishes couldn't go in the dishwasher, but had to be washed by hand. No one complained, though. I also used my sister's sterling silver and that had to be handwashed as well.

The weather is gorgeous here today. It's 52 degrees right now and very sunny. I'm going to run some errands this afternoon since it's so nice.

Where are you, Linny?? Hi to Joan!

Good afternoon everyone,
Josie and Garance I am very thankful everything but the biggest pots are dishwasher safe. I cook and clean up, but I just run the dishwasher 3 times.
Back to babysitting today. I did PS strong legs & abs at midnight but didn't feel it was enough. I don't use heavy enough weights. Did about half of butts and guts floor work premix at nap time and 2 mile Leslie Sansome.
I can tell wo are helping I can stay awake for Elliot's nap time.:D

Hi Ladies:
Thank you for all the Happy Birthdays:D. Have been busy with shopping,I did do the Black Friday thing. My DD and I went about 10 am so most of the maniac's were gone by then.Did get a few good deals.I have been doing alot of shopping on Amazon.
Deb:Hope your first day back to work went smoothly. How come work weeks go slow and time off goes so fast?:(.I did Fit to Dance today.I'm going to try very hard with my eating. I saw my rheumatologist last week and he said I was a walking miracle, due to the abnormal blood tests.
Garance: You lucky gal, only 3 more classes.I made turkey pot pie with the left overs tonight.I still have birthday cake and pies that need to go:eek:Tried to pawn the cake off on son,he said maybe he'll take it tomorrow.
Josie:I lucked out in the dish washing,DH would not let me help because it was my birthday;).Hope you got to go for your walk with friend.
JoanC:I don't know how you do it.Babysitting all day,then work,then a workout.I need your energy.Please send some this way.
Naptime is calling~Linny~

It's Tuesday ***yawn***

Good Morning all,

Another night on the couch and no workout this morning....DH thinks if we get a humidifier for the bedroom he will not snore as much...if only...

It's cold, rainy, windy, partial snow here this morning...the kind of weather that makes you want to stay indoors. Garance: I wish we would get your weather! Maybe it is headed this way? How nice that you use the china and silver from your Mom and sister. I use my Moms 25th anniversary china, it's white with silver trim, but we have to supplement with other to have enough. I keep kidding around about using Chinet paper plates each year...one of these years I will actually do it! My nieces and cousins help clean up and it is fun for us to be in the kitchen doing the clean up. Of course the men sit in the other room eating nuts and drinking while all the clean up is going on!

Josie; I understand how you feel..I also had dishpan hands after Thursday! At least you are making the effort to burn off the calories!

Joan: you did PS Legs and did not think it was enough? WOW!

Linny: It's good that you are doing the workouts and I understand about the eating! NOt sure why I cannot get into a better mindset. Yes those vacation weeks fly by. Work was ok, I still have about 140 e-mails that I did not get to yesterday, between meetings etc. I find that I am going to be giving a lot of gift cards this year..just cannot get into shopping for gifts. How sweet your DH was to do the clean up!

Well off to get ready for work!

Deb

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Kelly C-M's 30 minute weights for Back, Legs, and Chest with 15s, followed by 2 miles with Leslie (60 min.).

I made a very healthy beef and vegetable soup with my leftovers from the standing rib roast. Makes me feel very frugal, too. In the past, I have used a recipe at epicurious.com for "Quick Turkey Curry," which is very tasty if anyone still is looking for ideas.

Well, Linny, I'm glad someone is supporting the economy, because I sure ain't. I think I will do a lot of my shopping at Amazon, too. Sounds like you had a very relaxing Thanksgiving-birthday combined.

How heavy of weights do you use on PS, Joan? It's been some time since I have done this one, but I think I had 2 barbells at 35 and 45 lbs for the legs and 5 lb. ankle weights. I thought it was pretty exhausting.

For dishpan hands: the best rubber gloves are Bluettes. They last forever.

Has DH seen the doctor yet about his snoring, Deb? I wouldn't be able to workout either with so little sleep. Poor thing!

Off to my class!

Good morning ladies,
Deb and Garance- I think it was not enough because I was using light weights. I used 20lb vest in place of bb or 8lb db and 2 1/2 lb ankle .Today is two weeks on diet. I stayed the same this week.:D With all the extra eating I'm happy to stay the same.
Linny- I really think my diet has made the biggest difference in my energy level. I tried to put some of my old days meals in the nutrition calculator and there were a lot of f's.
I did go to bed earlier last night. I hope to get 3-4 miles on treadmill sometime today.
Joan

Hi Ladies:
Well only 23 days left till Christmas.Actually I'll be celebrating on the 20th,since I'm working Christmas Eve and night.Makes life so much easier that way.I told my DH one good thing about having it earlier if anyone else buys same gift for kids they will have to bring it back.Since ours will have already been opened and played with.I have some serious gift wrapping to do.I'm going to try and do a little each day so I don't feel overwhelmed come the night before.
Deb:Sounds like you sleep on the couch more than the bed.Maybe you should tell DH that he should sleep on couch then maybe he'll be quicker to do something about snoring;).Pretty murky around here too.Was foggy pretty much all day. They do say it may hit the 50's towards the end of week.
Garance:I have to check out that turkey curry,so spicy.I'm still trying to get rid of all the pie and cake.I made a different pumpkin pie this year. You use a graham cracker crust and take walnuts, cinnamon, brown sugar and butter, mix together and sprinkle on top before you bake.It was too good:eek:
JoanC: Good for you with no weight gain, especially after all that food thursday.I think I went up 1-2 pds,I hate feeling like this, like a stuffed sausage:(
Josie:Hope all is well.Did you get rid of those dishpan hands?
Well another exciting night coming up,we have a few patients with psych issues.~Linny~

Is it only Wednesday?

Hi,

I have today off because DH and I had a meeting with our financial person scheduled for today, and I have a vet apt for Kelsey to see if there is anything serious wrong with her leg. The financial meeting was too depressing...I hope that the vet apt ends up better!

Garance, I looked up Quick Turkey Curry at that site, there was nothing listed like that, but there was a "curry rice with turkey"...is this the one you meant? Another night on the couch last night...DH said again. that he will call the DR...we shall see.

Joan, Cudos to you for not gaining weight during Thanksgiving week!

Linny, how nice that you will be able to celebrate early! Good thinking on the advantage that has with the toy gifts!:D...hope the psych patients were mellow last night!

Josie, how are those hands? workouts planned for today? do you still get to run the dunes?

Have a great day...I am off to the vet

Deb

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie and Joan--

This morning I did the vertical premix on Kelly C-M's Stepboxing (40 min.).

Deb, I typed in Quick Turkey Curry at Epicurious.com in the search slot (upper right hand corner), and the recipe came right up. Don't know why it didn't for you.

Boy, I know what you mean about finances. I don't even want to check my retirement portfolio. DH just keeps saying we have to "stay the course."

So, now I'm shopping in earnest. My younger son wants a Dale of Norway Jubilee sweater in Large. Cannot find it anywhere but at a place up in Canada for a much higher price and no free shipping. Very frustrating. DH wants (get this!) a motion-sensor camera that can record things at night so he can see what kinds of things go on while we are sleeping. He finds animal prints and scat in the morning and is just curious. I'm not sure I want to know what's going on out there at night--it might scare me. That 's just for starters, though. Everyone seems to want something frightfully esoteric this year--grown-up toys.

Well, all your shopping now makes infinite sense, Linny. That's great that you can celebrate the holiday early and foil your toy opponents. I like your advice to Deb about letting him sleep on the couch.

One down and two to go--classes I mean.

Hi to Joan and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I did one hour of cardio last night, 30 min. on the elliptical and 30 min. on the bike.
Today I did Butts and Gutts, the 49 min. pre mix and let me tell you! My butt is sore.

Tonight I will be spinning and 30 min on the treadmill.

Deb, I have not been to the dunes in a while. I have been going to my spinning class instead on Sunday. Saturday's I like to walk with my friend and we have coffee and a bran muffin after.

Linny, I wish I had your energy to shop. I'm waiting for m DD to come home and help me.

Joan. Congratulations on not gaining any weight.

Garance, Check Amazon.com for the motion control camaras. We have them outside our house, because there was vandalism to our cars and it happend to be our neighbors kids.
We caught them and the Police got involved. It has not happende anymore, but we did catch an old man that walks his dog, and would let him poop in front of our house on purpose and never clean up. We confronted him, and he denied it. We pointed up to the roof and told him that we had him on video and that we were going to report him to the police. He does not walk his dog on our block anymore.

Well ladies. Have a great day!

Josie

Good morning Deb, Linny, Josie and garance,
I finally got in 3.75mi on treadmill late last night. I did PS back, biceps & abs at midnight for Wednesday.
Linny- I have done nothing yet for Christmas but put up 2 artificial trees. When I didn't get any help over Thanksgiving, I took down one of the trees. Maybe just lights is a good look. If you can get ready early that is great.
I though I had played it safe with dh 401k. We put it in Fidelity 2010 and 2015 Fund. When it lost so much in Oct., I read that it didn't get conservative until 30 years after you retired. I made the assumption it would follow standard practice of your age in bonds or more conservative investments when you were starting to withdraw funds in 2-7 years.
He didn't want to retire anyway.
Just looked at sts update and someone had posted gliding disks website. Just got another Christmas present from dh:). At least I'll let him wrap it up.
Joan

It's Thursday!

Good Morning!

I had a good night's sleep last night, for some reason DH's was quiet! So I did not get up, thinking I could use that extra hour of sleep.

I took Kelsey to the vet yesterday, and the news was not good. She has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. The vet said we can leave it, and treat with meds, but she will never be right, and will develp severe arthritis eventually. It’s her age and the long healing time which is the con part, however I am not one to let her be in pain or be lame if we don’t have to, John and I talked about it when he got home from work last night and we are going to have the surgery done. The hard part will be keeping her from jumping and keeping Keegan from bothering her while she heals.

Garance, this is funny..I was typing Epicurus.com, NOT Epicurious, and there IS a food/receipe website with that name! That is why it did not come up! I found 2 of those sweaters on Ebay, but they were a Medium and an Extra Large...can we wear an extra large? I would gladly get it for you and have it shipped to your place..oh, no...I just looked at them right now and just the medium is left...I can keep checking, let me know...

http://clothing.shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&_nkw=norway+jubilee&_sacat=11450

Josie, I like the motion controlled cameras that you have! That's great that you were able to catch those kids and the rude guy with the dog!

Joan, I will look at those disks, however I have those puzzle mats and I think I will have to pull them up for STS...I am waiting for the Pull up Tower..that is the only piece of equipment I have said I would buy for STS...I almost am at the point where I wish I would not have pre-ordered it.:(..with the way I am slacking lately on the workouts. Well, maybe it will be what I need to get going again.

Linny, I hope you had a good night at work...today is your "Friday" correct?

Have a great day ladies!

Deb

Hi ladies,
Deb- I want the Pull up tower too. So far dh has gotten me weighted vest (at least he was with me when I got it), the glide discs and the pace weights.
I really think the half pound weights will really help with sts I know I can't go up 5lbs at a time. I'm not really pushing myself now just trying different wo.
I really think sts (and the new year) will get me started. I expect to do sts a 2nd time with heavier wts and maybe the pull up tower will be available.
Sorry about Kelsey. My baby is a 6yr old Maine coon cat, Myron. We got him from shelter 3 years ago. When we brought him home they sent along medicine for infection. I thought I had gotten bargain for $25 cat. $250 later and a sulfur bath, he was fine.
I made sugar cookies with Elliot yesterday. She decorated them. Unfortunately I ate 6 cookies:eek:. I sent most of them home with her.
I can deal with my diet by not having anything good around the house.
I will try to get 3-4miles on treadmill today.
Joan

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Kelly C-M's 30 minute bis, tris, and shs plus 2 miles with Leslie (60 min.).

Glad you found the epicurious site, Deb. I find it very useful. That's so sweet of you about the sweater, but that is just the problem--tons of S, M, and XL at virtually every site but this one up in Canada. So, after consulting with DH, went ahead and bought the L from Canada. An XL would be too big (for a 44 chest, with room for layering, he would be swimming in it). He's a big downhill skier, and this is his new fetish object for both warmth and looking good on the slopes.

Too funny, Josie, about what you found with those motion sensor cameras. What's that old guy got against you?? Some people are so petty. I decided on a Cuddeback Capture 3.0 megapixel scouting camera for DH. Tons of positive reviews at Cabelas.com.

Joan, it sounds like you are really getting geared up for STS. Just the inspiration Deb and I will need. We are both grouchy about how long it has taken to get the series to us. You'd think it was Lord of the Rings or Gone With the Wind or something.

Hi to Linny!

two down, one to go--tomorrow!

Hi Ladies,

I ended up doing 3 miles on the treadmill last night. I did not feel like spinning.
I'm taking the day off today. I migh ask my DH to take me to dinner tonight.
I have to see how the market ended today. He is a banker with Northern Trust.

Garance, Some people a just jealous of what you have. My neighbor with the kids that were vandalising our cars said that we never let our DD play with her DD and I told her that we did not like what we had seen going on in their house such as them scraming at their kids in front of their house and cursing at them in the open. I told her that we did not want to expose our DD to that kind of behaviour. She told me that she thought that we thought that we were above them because we have nice cars and a nice home.

I told her that my DH and I have worked very hard for what we have and no one has given us anything for free and that we just wanted to live in a peaceful place minding our own business and ever since then it has been ok.

Deb, I'm sorry to hear about your baby.

Linny, Are you finished shopping?

Joan, You are doing so well on your diet and workouts! We are proud of you.

Josie

Hi Ladies:
Deb:You're right tonight is my friday night, yahoo! I have plenty to do this coming weekend.Tons of presents to wrap and decorating to do:eek:
Poor Kelsey,I hope sugery is a success.Good to hear you actually got some sleep.I'd be a b*tch if I didn't get my sleep.
Garance:You lucky girl, are you going to celebrate tomorrow night?I'll have to check out epicurious this weekend.
JoanC:Sounds like you're going to have your ownlittle gym.Good job giving away those cookies.
Josie:I've been going crazy on Amazon.com,to many good deals. How's shopping going for you?
