Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/3

garance, here's the link. I posed the question on the STS forum cause I figured I couldn't be the only person having issues with sit-n-stands, but I couldn't find it on search. http://tv.cathe.com/sts-week-3a/
It's about half way thru the clip. seems like would work the same areas as wall squats but I can't get up without waving my arms around.

regarding vit D... I keep reading that if you live north of about los angeles/atlanta, you don't get enough sunlight in winter for your skin to manufacture enough vit D. plus for me and probably many others, the parts exposed to sunshine often are pretty well coated with sunscreen. so, I take vitamin d supplements much of the year now. I was very surprised to see how low my level was even though I was already taking some D with my calcium, and I do have an excellent diet, if I do say so myself.. so now I take 1000 iu qd.

Hi Ladies,

I do not do 1000 squats; I just meant that I like doing regular ones. If I did 1000 squats I would be able to crush a walnut with my buns of steel ;)

Josie

Thanks Valerie for the link. It looks like a good substitute is one-legged squats and forget the need for momentum to get off the chair.

Hi ladies,

I "did" hiit 40/20 and boxing today. I will need a softer floor and a better bra if I do them again. Even the boxing has a lot of jumping. The boxing does have a good ab section.

Joan

TGIF!!!

Good morning!

I slept pretty well last night. Those Tylenol PM's seem to be the answer. I only take one though.....when I took 2, they kept me awak! Go figure.

Tomorrow we have a memorial service to attend for a long time friend that passed away 2 weeks ago. 4 people that we knew died in December. :(

Joan, sounds like a plan! I keep hearing good things about the boxing one....I am trying really hard not to order it!

Valerie, I could never stay outside in the cold/snow for 5 hours! Thanks for the link. I will check it out... I was doing them with 2 feet on the ground. Thanks for the cold prevention tips too, although I have a different view on anti-bacterial use... I too, am making sure I get 1000 units of Vit D a day, through the supplements I take, then whatever I get from dairy is extra.

Josie, thanks for the link. Sorry about your barber friend...:(

Garance, I guess I knew that 6 hours of teaching was too good to be true!

CAthy, thanks for the info on those workouts and the link... Sounds like you will have some great DOMS!

Have a good day!

I think I forgot to mention, I'm done with the coumadin. ('cuse me if I already reported it) Last week saw my doc and he said everything looked totally normal sp that was enough. whoopee! he wants me to take 1 baby coated aspirin for 3 more months, a very minor thing. My arm looks great. will always have to be careful about mechanical pressure across the front of my left shoulder. I fixed my daypack so the strap is held away a bit, and that should do it.

Staying outside isn't hard with the right clothes and gear, plus knowing what's necessary for you to be comfortable. we always carry enough for an unplanned overnight if needed although we never needed to! important even on short dayhikes in warm weather cause you can't predict when things might go wrong. what's needed varies with the season and forecast but there are basics you should not go without. I always shudder when I see people bounding up some trail carrying nothing but a water bottle and wearing a t-shirt and shorts. If ANYTHING (even minor things) goes wrong they're potentially in big trouble. we've gone on backpacks of up to a week and have done overnights in the winter so 5 hours is no biggie. you need to know what to carry and then carry it. doesn't do any good sitting in the trunk of your car.

did a bike warm up and disk 8 yesterday! starting to feel pretty good about STS and I will resist looking at any other workouts until I complete it.... no matter what gets mentioned...

well, tell ya what , deb. i am so sore today. the hip flexor work in staying power is cool. i REALLY feel it in my hips and legs today. and, of course , my upper body from JFarms. went HEAVY to get to failure, cuz it is a short workout, so i pushed it hard.
ok , today i am gonna try 30/30, hope i make it thru. i also use tylenol pm at times. they do work pretty good.

those sit-n-stands are just impossible. after 2 rounds of STS, i can keep one foot up for part of the time, but not the whole time. i don't think i like them very much.:)

Hi ladies,

My shoulder joint is really sore. I don't think I will do the boxing one again except for the abs. They were different and didn't have a dread factor that some of them do. I have always had trouble with my right shoulder and by the end of STS I had strengthened it enough so I didn't have pain. I don't want to aggravate it.

Garance you definitely would not want 40/20. I don't know how I would modify it to get similar benefits. I think Cathe can do it because of the floor she uses. You can see it bounce. Music in all dvd's is just there to keep the beat. I have tried nutisystem in the past and the food is not that good. Yesterday I ate 1281 calories-a good start.

Valerie I'm glad you are off coumadin. I'm with you on the vitamin D. Doctor told me to take 1000 calcium and vit d. I wish they had checked it sooner.

Deb So sorry about your friends. 2009 was not the best of years. I hope 2010 is better or at least uneventful.

Hi to Josie and Cathy.

Joan

Hi Ladies,

I will be working out with Kevin tomorrow plus 1 hour spinning. Sunday I will be going out for a long bike ride, I don't know how many miles I will do yet, but I will play it by ear.

Deb, when is your convention in Palm Springs?

Joan, what are you going to do with your winnings?

Valerie, people used to laugh at me for being so prepared while on a long run. I used to carry all kids of things in my water/fanny pack.

Hi to Cathy and Garance.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Travel Fit and thought it was really very good. Lots of variety and creativity on this one and I definitely felt some of these in a different way than with weights--especially the biceps curl that goes up to a shoulder press (50 min.). Next week is Meso 3, so I will be doing some heavy weights. I still am not doing the STS legs, though. I really prefer the P-57 workouts for my legs and butt. I just received my Brazil Butt Lift DVDs and will preview them this weekend and maybe do a couple of them instead of P-57.

Joan, your need for a better floor and better bra cracks me up. I think I read somewhere that people were doing the HIIT workouts on a trampoline, which would solve the floor problem but probably only aggravate the bra problem. Yes, I am glad I don't have the HIIT workouts to mock me with my inability to jump around.

Cathy, don't tempt me with more workouts! BBL, the two step DVDs with Cathe, Cardio Barre and Petra Kolber, and Travel Fit are plenty for me for now.

Deb, you and your DH have had a lot of deaths this past year. I had a few years like that with my mom and my sisters dying. It took very little to start the tears, and I still try to reserve some time to think about all of them and remember some of the good times.

Valerie, I don't think I could stand an overnight experience in the cold, but I know what you mean about dressing for outings. If anything, I overdress when we go snowshoeing and I am really sweating by the time I get back, even if the temps are REALLY cold. I have to think about the Vitamin D. I already take so many supplements it's embarassing when I write them down for the Dr.

Hi to Josie!

Actually, sweating gets you cold, as soon as you stop especially if you're wearing cotton, a bad fabric for almost all conditions. If you're sweating to any degree, take off something or slow down. seems like we're constantly taking things on and off, especially DH who sweats WAY more than I. even when I work out intensely, I don't sweat much.
when we start we're over dressed, but stop for a clothes adjust in about 10 minutes when the layers come off. You lose about 25% of your body heat via head and neck so to stay warm put on a hat or neck gaiter. It's really dramatic how quickly you can tell the difference. when I get too warm the hat is the first thing to go off.

If you're working out at home you can change clothes, or, as you've no doubt noticed, you get cold quickly. if you're out for the day you need to keep dry by wearingwicking material against your skin. merino wool is good and getting a lot of attention these days but I can't tolerate it against my skin ( except feet), so I'm a polyester person. As I'm sure Josie can attest, bike riding with the wind will really amplify cooling effect of being damp. it doesn't matter how you get wet... rain, snow, or your own sweat, if you get wet you're going to get cold especially if it's windy, or you're moving quickly like on a bike.

Vitamin d has gotten a lot of attention the last couple years and generally it seems the trend is toward recommending larger amounts. I'm not a big supplement person.... calcium and vit D are it unless I've been exposed to a headcold and then the vit C & zinc. I don't know if it's the best course for everyone but it seems to work best for me.

garance, thanks for the travel fit review. I'm considering it for when I want some exercise but can't access weights. not buying anything until I finish STS. I have disks I've barely used but I get tempted by "new" just the same. Brazilian butt lift sounds like it's got my name on it.
Joan, what kind of bra works for you? I have a favorite one but it's an over the head style. It's not expensive and supports way better than any others I've tried although I do get a uniboob look. I'm a 36D and have gone thru my share of wimpy sports bras. I have major trouble with back hooks so like OTH best. I get it at roadrunner sports..I'll get the name and number if you want to take a look.

Good evening Deb, Garance, Josie, Cathy and Valerie,

I just finished disc 3 of STS.

Valerie Most of my bra problem is that I don't normally wear one. I have some sport bras from Target, but right now they are all too small.

It's supposed to be 0 tonight. If it gets down as expected to -1 Sunday it will be the coldest it has been in 10 years.

Josie, Unfortunately all the winnings go into the bank.

Joan

Saturday...Yes!!

Good Morning,

I love Saturday! Even though it is filled with HOuseMax activities, I would rather be doing these than working..

Besides the memorial service this afternoon we have no other things that we "have to do"...what is everyone up to this weekend?

Joan, you are up so late! I forget what the time difference is between here and where you are. My PC shows you posting at 1:35 am..No bra? You mean no bra when you work out? I like the sport bras at Champion for workouts... You can get them at local sporting goods stores or on line. I wear one of these when I work out both for support ( not that I am big at all) and to hold me HRM in place. ;).

Valerie, Yay for being done with those meds...I bet that is a weight off your mind.

Cathy, check out the link that Valerie posted with Cathe showing how to do the sit n' stands...it looks like it might work. I think my problem was I was using my 14" Firm box thing and it was not high enough.

Josie, the convention is from Feb 7-11. Still not sure what to pack. I have to kind of be business casual for the meetings but can be casual outside the meetings..ugh

Garance, I kind of like Travel Fit, a nice change..just not sure if it really would keep the strength in your muscles if you did it for a month or something...but I definitely would use it when travelling and wanting something besides the treadmill that hotels have.

Have a good day!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

Housemax for me this morning, and I am now not bothered by the grout in my laundry room and downstairs bathroom. They look great, especially the bathroom after the Stainsolver. (Thanks again, Deb!).

We are going out for dinner tonight, but other than that no real plans.

My bust is a 34 B, so I don't wear a bra when I work out because the shelf bras in my workout tops seem to hold everything in place. I do, however, wear a bra otherwise.

Valerie, every day I take Osteo-biflex (2) and pine bark extract (1) for my knees, calcium citrate with Vitamin D (2), 500 mg. of vitamin C (1), Biotin for my hair (1), a fish oil capsule (1), low dose aspirin (1), and vitamin b complex (1). Hence my restraint on adding to the pills. The pine bark extract is fairly new. I read about a study in More mag that showed improvement in cartilage after using it for 6 months. My hairdresser swears by Biotin and that one is fairly new too. It does seem to make my hair shinier and to have more body. In the last two years I have had one cold. Other than a few aches and pains, I have been very fortunately healthy.

Anyone looking forward to American Idol? Project Runway? 24? Big Love? They are all starting up again. I love the first few weeks of American Idol with the auditions. I will, however, really miss Paula Abdul. Big mistake firing her.

I'm not that big but the shelf bras don't work for me. I need more substantial, but am bothered by back hooks. I feel them jabbing me when I lie on the floor and I have a terrible time hooking and unhooking them. I like T-backs that go over the head best but they're hard to find. bra hooking must be a skill learned young cause I can't hook do it in back and t-backs you can't hook in front and spin around.

Any way, road runnersports.com sells an OTH t-back that is heavy duty lycra for about $30. they last for YEARS and support better than anything else I've tried, and no hooks or underwires. they come in a/b and c/d. I'm stunned at the prices I'm seeing these days for bras. I had one I liked from moving comfort but when I re-ordered a second one the design had changed to back hooks.

I recently switched to calcium citrate plus d and didn't notice that I'm supposed to take 2 qd. when I'm done I'll go back to calcium carbonate. the big pills are hard to face all the time. DH is taking coQ-10 and talk about BIG! they're HUGE.

I use Viactive for my vit d and calcium. I like to get my chocolate fix. It is calcium carbinate. The calcium carbinate in Tums always made me constipated.

For the 2 or 3 times a year I wear a bra I have a 38B with extenders. I am a 40- 42 but B cup is too big on those and cup is perfect on 38B.

No wo yet. It is so cold in the lower level of my house that I didn't want to get out of bed this morning. Of course if I did Step Moves like I have scheduled I'm sure I would warm up.

Joan

did total body time crunch w/heavy wts. and added 3 sets of squats w/63# barbell
and , 2 sets 1 legged squats w/40#.
then, had a migraine all afternoon. ick!
ya'll have a nice weekend.

No wo yet. I was looking at my new collagevideo guide and then went on line. Garance I can see why you do Kelly C-M videos. I took the time to view several and she has a really good modifier. I couldn't find a good way to modify 40/20 and used half the calories of lowmax.

I was given a Wii game for Christmas but don't know if I want to waste the money on fitness games for it. It wasn't a total waste the 20-30 year olds played it.

bbl with wo
