Pentagenarians & Beyond: 03/16/2025

This morning I did IMAX 4 Combos and then I put together a workout using all the standing core from STS 2 and a ball stretch from Total Body Stretching. Rainy here, though it hasn't rained in a few hours now. We lost 2 trees in the crazy winds yesterday. One I called the grapevine tree, as it died years ago and was spiraled with grapevines several inches thick. The other one, I'm not sure what it was. Both fell in our yard, one in a way that we probably can just leave it, the other one has about 10 feet into the grass.

Valerie snowy's and short-eared are so different, that I can't imagine how anyone could confuse them. Sadly, short-eared are endangered here. Doesn't help their cause that they are ground nesters, often choosing fields. We have the same thing here with the snowy's. There are always areas in the UP that get quite a few wintering, but years when the lemmings are down, they come further down. My favorites are Barred and Saw-whet (which are just SO cute). When I used to stay on Mackinac Island twice a summer, I'd sometimes go out hiking at night and you could hear the barreds in the woods. I've read that they like to fly behind people, but never had that happen. Great Horned and Barred Owls are the most common owls here. Though where we are at we only hear Great Horns and Eastern Screech Owls. And going back a bit, Derek and I have long argued over orange flamingos. We've seen at least 3 different types of flamingos and I feel there are definitely some that are orange. He feels they are always a variation of pink.

Carolyn I hope you weren't impacted by the storm. I know near my sisters place in Brevard got hit pretty hard. The city is out of power, and she said there were at least 14 trees that hit houses, including one that killed a couple boys.

I did my usual Sunday morning yoga/mobility for 20 minutes this morning. The heavy rain and lightning from the storm came through around 2:00. We don’t have any damage, just a lot of debris in the yard, but some areas were not so lucky.

Valerie, nice job with the yard walk and therapy work.

Judy, great job walking 40 minute of Peloton ride, walking, and 20 minutes of Peloton lower body.

Cathy, great job with IMAX combos and your blend of STS 2 standing core and Total Body Stretch. The storm did a lot of damage and left a trail of destruction in its wake.

Hello to Diane Sue and Shannon.

I couldn't understand how they got confused about short ear versus snowy owl. they ran a big pictorial article about how lucky this person was to get pics of the "snowy" owl. I contacted them to put in my 2 cents but never was acknowledged. we have short ears here, also screech and pygmy owls and great horned but the most common is barred. i saw the great gray in our yard a few years ago. we hear a barred one in our yard daily so maybe it will nest here. last year a pair nested in a neighbor's yard. they were vocal and visible teaching their offspring to fledge. we have spotted owls in the mountains in old growth forest but they and barred look so much alike I would not trust I could tell the difference. we see a lot of barred in the mountains often flying and roosting over roads. love seeing and watching owls!.

I did half the stacked upper body workout and a short spin and feel appropriately slightly sore, I lightened some weights and skipped most over the head moves, or did them with one arm. will do again tomorrow. want to ease back in. doing shopping today.

what a nasty series of storms.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, ladies! Is everyone wearing green? I am not.

Going back to Friday, I did LMR Functional Core Fusion and Functional Yoga Fusion, which made a very nice recovery workout. Saturday I was able to take a five-mile walk after the rain stopped. Sunday I raked leaves and moved a bunch of very heavy rocks. I am sore today and probably need to take a rest day. I certainly don’t need to lift weights, which is my normal Monday workout.

When I was moving rocks, I turned one over and a snake was under it. It was black on top with a red underside, thin and less than a foot long. I knew it wasn’t one of our poisonous ones, so I wasn’t worried. But I’d never seen one before, so I googled it. It’s a worm snake, so called because its only food is worms. I’d say a good place to find worms would be under a rock!

Cathy – Good job on sleeping through your alarm Friday night, LOL. I’m sure it felt really good. Wow, you really did have some crazy wind! I’m glad no trees landed on your house. I used to have a tree sort of like your grapevine tree, only it was covered in poison ivy. Ugh, it was a true horror, LOL.

Valerie – Yes, I may have heard a barred owl, but I’m not sure. I didn’t see that one, since it was dark. And I rarely get close enough to actually identify one. I usually see them in the woods, and all the tree branches interfere with a clear view.

Judy – I hope your six-hour day wasn’t too hard on you. It’s when you do several in a row that they really add up, right?

Carolyn – I’m glad you weren’t impacted by the storms. We had a very fast-moving line come through with no problems. But like you said, some areas weren’t so lucky. Tornadoes killed three people in northeast Arkansas, and I know there were something like 30 injured as the storms gained strength as they moved east.

Good chance it was a barred owl shannon. they make all kinds of weird sounds, howls and barks. very vocal. especially during daylight hours.
snakes are fascinating. we have rattlesnakes in montana but havent seen one in a long time. supposedly there is a large den area where many rattlesnakes over winter thats close but weve never seen a single snake. other snakes often but none are poisonous. garten snakes, bull snakes, rubber boas. im not afraid of them but I dont do stupid things either. look when you move rocks, dont reach up over rocky ledges if you cant see, etc. im good at spotting them and see them where dozens of people have walked by and not noticed them. I assume because Im clumsy and watch the ground more than most people do so I dont trip. DH walks right by and never sees them.

that is scary weather. a big reason I left the Midwest. I could not function when there was a severe weather warning. it terrifies me. cant eat, cant sleep, just a mess.

Today I did PP Upper Body. It's sunny, and I've been going out to walk, but it's winter coat temps.

I'm good with the fact that there are no dangerous snakes here. We do have the massasauga rattlesnake, but they are shy and prefer habitats away from people. They are also on the special concern list and their numbers aren't high. The only ones we ever get in our yard are Garter snakes.

Carolyn and Shannon glad you weren't impacted by the storms in your areas.

This morning I did Rev’d Up Rumble, 41 minutes, 281 calories burned, 131 average heart rate, and 172 maximum heart rate. The rotation had Cardio Core Circuit listed for today, but I was not in the mood for that, even with low impact modifications.

Valerie, great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body and spinning.

Shannon, great job with LMR Functional Core Fusion and Functional Yoga Fusion, walking 5 miles and moving heavy rocks.

Cathy, great job with PP Upper Body.

Hello to Diane Sue and Judy.

Today I did a 45-minute Peloton Walk, 30 minutes of Peloton Full Body Strength and 15 minutes of stretching. We are having a busy week here with working on the condo and more spring cleaning. I probably won’t be posting much but I’ll try to check in later this week.

Cathy-Great job with IMAX 4 Combos, your standing core and stretch mix and PP Upper Body.

Carolyn-Great job with yoga/mobility and Rev’d Up Rumble. I’m glad that you weren’t impacted by the bad weather.

Valerie-Great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body & spinning.

Shannon-Great job with LMR Functional Core Fusion and Functional Yoga Fusion, walking and all of the outdoor work. Working 6 hours wasn’t too bad. Yes, it’s the cumulative effect of multiple days in a row that seem to be the problem. I’m only working weekends now so that should help.

Hi to Diane Sue

Today I did STS 2.0 Super Sets Total Body, 1 set. My time was 39 minutes with 114 calories burned, average heart rate 107, and maximum heart rate 130.

Judy, great job with the Peloton walk, Peloton strength, and stretching.

Hello to Cathy, Valerie, Shannon, and Diane Sue.

Hi ladies. Yesterday was a rest day. I did my own stretching. I have a very nice routine that gets all the places that really need it. And I don’t have to set up my living room to watch a DVD.

Snakes … Arkansas has four poisonous ones. Cottonmouth, copperhead, coral snake and rattlesnake, although I don’t know what type of rattlesnake. They’re not in my area anyhow, thank goodness. Cottonmouths and copperheads are very common, and we see them all the time. I may or may not have seen a coral snake many years ago when I was looking for landscaping rocks in the woods. I lifted one up, saw a brightly banded snake and left as fast as I could. It could have been one of the look-alikes, but I didn’t want to get close enough to find out. I don’t know how many non-poisonous snakes we have. Lots.

Valerie – whatever kind of owl it is, I love to listen to them when they’re off in the distance. Yes, snakes are fascinating. My mom thinks they’re evil. I try to tell her they’re just trying to live their lives. Tornadoes aren’t fun, but I don’t have any particular fear of storms. We just deal with them as they come. Fortunately our homes have not been directly hit, we think because a hill deflects tornadoes that come up from the south.

Cathy – Poor you, still winter coat temps? Although actually I might prefer that. It’s not bad today, but last week we had lots of humidity and temps near 80. I really don’t want summer. I’m glad you’ve been able to get out and walk.

Carolyn – Good work with Rev’d Up Rumble and Super Sets Total Body. I think that one is on my schedule for later this week.

Judy – Good job on getting in such a great workout even though you’re busy with all the work on your condo, plus weekends at HD. I’ll bet you’ll be sleeping well.

our "many- times changed" plan is now to leave tomorrow early. weather looks ok for the drive in all areas. passes have snow and ice but ok. . Puss is going to kitty kennel. not my favorite option but its what will work right now.

I did a short 20 min spin, therapy work, and half of stacked upper body like before. went up in weights a little and did more things. i avoid doing rapid fire moves because they seem like fast moves even without weight are more risky. its 6 weeks now . i would love to relax about this.
I always thought snakes were cool. there is the "red and yellow kill a fellow" but ive never seen that kind of snake so im not sure how easy it is to tell while you are backing away ASAP. we have rattlers in eastern WA and many of the states we traveled to. interesting. naw, not evil. just critters trying to make a living like we all are.
I developed this terror of tornadoes when I was very young. I saw one once hanging down from the cloud deck and then had a bad scare when baby sitting several children in a strange neighborhood. there were warnings and alerts, and I was so afraid and could not find a flashlight to take the kids to the basement. as the power flickered. i didnt know the area well enough to know if the touch downs were close or not. it was outside of Milwaukee in the 60's. alerts were not as accurate then as now, although with so many NOAA people losing jobs its hard to predict if good info will continue. somehow tornadoes became too scary after that.

I have not done much in the way of workouts. I miss Gertie so much. Lots of tears. My husband took me to lunch today and asked if I wanted to go to the animal shelter. We came home with another dog and named him Harvey which was a fictional character my husband used to use in jokes and stories when he did drug talks in schools for DARE. I did CDorner Cardio Old school 70's and 80's Saturday along with LMR Functional Pilates Fusion.
Yesterday I did CDorner All Standing Low Impact Cardio 80's music33 minutes, 221 calories, heart rate 139/165, 3,473 steps and LMR Anytime mobility bonus 17 minutes, 44 calories.
No workout today.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did Cross Fire, subbing low impact moves for all of Cathe’s crazy tuck jumps and such. I remember the day when I used to actually do tuck jumps and love them. I also remember the day when I did far too much high impact on a concrete slab and tile floor, and managed to give myself a stress fracture, LOL.

Valerie – Safe travels to you. I hope Puss does okay in the kitty kennel. I’m sure he will miss you. Do you think a visit to your doctor would help you to relax a little bit? Maybe he can give you an official release to exercise. Yes, “red and yellow kills a fellow” is true. But when I flipped that rock over, all I saw was banded colors, and I didn’t want to stop long enough to see what order they were in. I can see how you’d become scared of tornadoes when you had several kids to care for! That would definitely imprint it on your mind.

Diane – It’s good to hear from you. I really know how you feel and totally understand how you miss Gertie. When I had to put Sunny to sleep about two years ago, I lost my best friend and cried hard, many times. I hope Harvey gives you comfort. What sort of dog is he? I’m glad you are ready to open your home and heart to another dog. It can be a hard thing to do.

Hello to Cathy, Judy and Carolyn.

Yesterday I did Live Low Impact Cardio Hiit, and I need to remember how much I like that one. Then I did Live Long and Sculpted Legs. That one has gliding discs, no equipment, barre and balance ball. A really nice variety of moves. Today I got a late start. I went out and walked earlier and I'm hoping to walk enough today to get 10,000 steps.

Diane Sue I'm glad that you were able to bring Harvey home. I know losing Gertie is hard and will always be missed, but now Harvey gets to have a secure and loving home. I hope he settles in quickly.

Shannon I've seen northern water snakes, mostly garter snakes and a little blue racer once. My grandpa used to tell how the blue racers would race along the tractor in the fields. I did see a small northern red belly snake once on Mackinac Island, but it was dead. That's a pretty short list considering we have 18 snakes here.

Valerie I hope your trip goes smoothly and that kitty does okay.

Judy I hope you get a lot accomplished this week.

Hi Carolyn.

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one for 26 minutes and 187 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 185.

Diane Sue, I’m so sorry about Gertie. It’s good that you were able to find a dog at the shelter. Great job with the CDorner and LMR workouts.

Shannon, great job with your own stretching, walking, and Cross Fire. I used to do Cross Fire, but never with high impact moves.

Valerie, I hope that you are having a safe and uneventful trip.

Cathy, great job with Live Low Impact HiiT and Live Long and Sculpted Legs.

Hello to Judy.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga Total Body. It was a good workout. Maybe this means I’m finally ready to make yoga a part of my workout routine. I did make some changes to the sun salutations. I don’t like them, and they’re hard on my wrists. And when he did the final rest/corpse pose at the end, I did shoulder stretches. I need to keep them as a daily thing, because they are definitely helping.

I wish Cathe would give us an update about LMR 2.0. I’m really excited about this series. This is the first time I ever preordered on the very first day. I always wait until she puts up clips and gives more info.

Cathy – Did you get 10,000 steps in yesterday? That’s really cool about the blue racers. When we first moved back here, there were lots of very long (probably 6 feet) black snakes, probably a type of racer. They’d flow up and over bushes and everything. They disappeared when things got too settled out here. I should research how many types of snakes actually are in Arkansas. I really don’t know.

Carolyn – Good job with KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix.

Hello to Valerie, Judy and Diane.

we did the drive yesterday with dry sunny the whole way. takes 10 hr 45 minutes. all the issues we had before we left last time have settled down. new water heater works great. snow on driveway has shrunk to very little. we can see our local elk herd off downhill, hundreds of them . probably will just relax here today , not that nice out and driving anywhere is not sounding great. its stll winter here, lots of snow left.

ha.... I'll bet you didn't look closely at the color stripes on the snake.! snakes are interesting but when one crosses the road in front of us while riding, we assume its a rattler and back off. . its always been a garter snake. they dont all look exactly the same and zooming across the road you mostly see movement, not details. we walked past what I think was a bull snake in Yellowstone once, and im sure dozens of people went by and never noticed him. it was on the way to a spot called boiling river that doesnt exst anymore after the flooding a few years ago. was an extremely popular spot then. he was huge in a big coil like a rattler sitting next to the trail. DH walked past it too, so I stopped and called him back. when we were more sure what kind of snake we looked closer since he was so huge. only one I ever saw. so much to look at in yellowstone but you need to slow down and get out of the car and walk around quietly and be surprised.

I have a last appointment with cardiology in early april and hopefully i will be released completely. i think the risks have been exaggerated but I can also be careful for another 2 weeks. its not interfering much anymore. its such a disaster if it gets infected they really hammer down on caution.

diane sue that is a different approach. after we had to put down pets we always took a break before getting another. after our last cat we took 5 years, usually we didn't take long. we spent half a day without Puss and missed him immediately. I felt so bad taking him to a kennel but he has been impossible to drive with. house was way too quiet. Good for you getting a dog from a shelter. so many dogs and too few get adopted. our pets have all been shelter pets. give yourself some grace. losing a pet is for me worse than losing a family member.

This morning I did LMR Functional Barre Fusion for 52 minutes and 240 calories burned. Average heart rate was 118 and maximum heart rate was 159. That one is more of a workout than it seems at first glance.

Shannon, great job with Rodney Yee Power Yoga Total Body. I’m glad that you found one that you like.

Valerie, I’m glad that you arrived safely. Taking it easy today sounds like a good plan.

Hello to Judy, Cathy, and Diane Sue.

Yesterday we got a quote for carpeting and also contacted a paint contractor to get started on finishing the painting and removing some popcorn ceiling that we want to get rid of. We will have the paining done first then do the carpeting. We are also getting new bedroom furniture and having a generator hook up installed in addition to a few other things. It will be a busy spring and summer here.

Tuesday I walked 40 minutes and did a 45-minute Peloton Full Body strength workout. Yesterday I didn’t have much time but I wanted to do something so I did a 20-minute row. Today I did a 45-minute Peloton ride and a 15-minute stretch.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Super Sets Total Body, 1 set, Cardio Quick Fix, workout one and LMR Functional Barre Fusion.

Shannon-Great job with stretching, walking, Cross Fire and Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga Total Body.

Diane Sue-I’m so sorry about Gertie, I know how much you miss her. I’m glad that you found a dog at the shelter. Great job with your workouts this week.

Cathy-Great job with Live Low Impact Cardio Hiit and Long and Sculpted Legs. I hope you had a good walk today.

Valerie- I’m glad you had a safe trip.
