Pedometer - more than 10,000?

I am on a trekk to lose about 40 pounds. I use my pedometer to make sure that I'm walking/exercising enough. My goal has been to get 10,000 steps at least each day. Does anybody have any advice or used this method themselves and think I should try for more?

Thanks, Marcia :)

I am getting my 10,000 steps in a day BUT I do not count exercise/jogging within the step goal. I do at least 10,000 steps in addition to exercise by simply walking more (through the house, park at the end of the store parking lots, go into the store through the 'wrong' side (if I want groceries, I enter through the garden center of a supercenter to make the walk longer)etc.

Marcia,
Congratulations on your goal! 10,000 steps is a great way to stay focused and get a lot of benefits.

I hope this isn't too long-winded; we had a check-in a while back on the ya-ya's and here's some info from there. Most of us with office jobs found that we only got 3-6,000 steps a day, so 10,000 was a good goal to work towards. Prevention magazine outlined a program that started with your daily average + 5,000 steps as a goal. For most people that translated as 10,000. But then, every few weeks or so, you're supposed to add 2,500 steps towards your goal. I don't know what the ultimate goal eventually is, though.

So many articles recommend 10,000 as reasonable for maintaining fitness. Since I don't want to "maintain" but rather "lose weight", my current goal is 10,000 steps a day (for health) plus a cardio workout (to lose weight). That's my goal, not what I achieve. Yesterday though I got 9,000 steps plus did Imax2.

btw - it took several months before I felt comfortable with 10,000 steps daily! And there were many weeks that included a day or two of only 5,000 steps.

Best of luck with your challenge! I think you'll find that you'll feel even better as you become more active throughout the day.

WOW! You get 10,000 steps NOT including exercise. WOW - that's all I can say. That would be a very tough goal, but a good one to work towards.

Do you take your pedometer off then when you exercise or just take note of the step count before you do your exercise and subtract at the end of the day?

Marcia :)

Hi Marcia!
Yes,it's tough. And it's a "goal" definitely not a daily occurence!

Usually I take my pedometer off during my "official" workout, other times I just take note of the counts. I'm not very disciplined on that.

btw - it's easier to get 10,000 steps on days I don't want to houseclean! I go do something else :)
