It looks like the only non standard peice of equipment I would need for the P90x is the chin up bar. Is this really necessary for the work out? I really want it but don't want to part with the dough.
It's not necessary...though I will tell you it's a great piece of equipment to have, so if you can swing it I would highly recommend it. If you don't want to go the pull-up bar route, you can use resistance tubing with a door attachment. Resistance tubing you can get many places. The only thing I would suggest is getting one that's pretty "heavy" in regards to the resistance it provides. Beachbody sells a door attachment but it isn't the greatest. Many hear recommended one from Sissel (http://www.sissel-online.com). I got it and I have to say it is much better. On each of the back workouts there is someone using the bands, so it shows you how to modify the pull-ups. They also show you ways to assist yourself if using the pull-up bar...so it isn't like you have to be able to do a full bodyweight pull-up. Hope this helps .
I say if you can, get a pullup bar. Pullups and chinups are wonderful exercises. I did my first P90X rotation without one. I did Lat pull downs for back work. I got a chinup tower for Christmas last year and started a new rotation in Jan and by March was able to do a chinup!!! Now I can do 3 sets of 4 and several smallers sets. I can also do 2 pullups. And man my back never looked better. I am constantly trying to find halters and backless tops to wear to show it off. Not to mention how empowering it is to know that I can do an exercise that many men can not even do }( }( }( }(
That being said, P90X is still a wonderful program even without a chinup bar.
I started P90X without a pull-up station, and just did heavy 1-arm rows (alternating sides with each set) and pull-overs instead of the pull-ups and chin-ups. Then I moved to using the B-line bands ( the heaviest set of 3) and a door attachment I got from www.sissel-online.com (the door attachment you can get from Beachbody is lame) and did pull-downs. When I got a tower, I still would often do 1/2 of the pull-ups/chin-ups as pulldowns (because I could get much better reps than with the assisted chins/pulls).
