Our homeless guy rides a 10-speed to the liquor store!

I guess I always remember that story in the bible where a very poor man and his wife were breaking their last piece of bread and the visitors came knocking, hungry and tired. The man and his wife handed their last piece of bread to their visitor even though they themselves were starving.

The next morning (if I am remembering right) the visitors said some thing like "You never know when you are entertaining angels"....they blessed the couple and they prospered.

I always try and remember that when I see down on their luck folks....I just love to give when I can wherever and whenever....without a thought as to how the receiver will use it, whether it be clothing, money, food, etc....

I am not a not guilt-tripped upper middle class person. I don't take people home with me to do odd jobs and I don't LIVE in FEAR. I give because I chose to give. I live in a somewhat rural area where jobs don't pay that much and there are many people living in poverty.

I give regularly to the Salvation Army and every year adopt a needy family at Christmas. I have been inside these homes and I see hard working people trying to make ends meet. I have never been homeless and hopefully I never will. I don't look at everyone I meet as a scam artist. I try give people hope and a little human kindess in a cruel world.

I don't feel used. You are used only if you choose to be. I don't hand out money on a regular basis but when I see someone who looks troubled or in misery I do what I can. I'm not trying to do them any favors. I just trying to show kindness. Please do not judge me. I am not judging you. This is what I chose to do.

I think that's wonderful. That's why I also contribute food, clothing and blankets and fans to the shelters in my neighborhood (in lieu of direct contributions). And the central Ohio Salvation Army has benefitted greatly from my spring cleaning flurry! It's not GIVING to which I object but, rather, the manner in which it's done, often taking a bad situation and making it worse. Unlike you, my home is in the inner-city. I am surrounded by the homeless, drug dealers, prostitutes and gun violence - and I often come home from work in the wee hours of the morning. My reality is not a story on the evening news, it just IS. As for living in fear: I believe in the voice of warning we all have and that, if we listen, will lead us from danger every time. Lending help is a wonderful thing but you must exercise caution, perhaps not where you live but, certainly, where I live. If you get hurt or killed you can't help anyone. I'm not heartless nor am I unkind but you are entitled to believe the worst, if you choose.

I understand where you are coming from Sirensong....I live in Vegas, and have to constantly be careful of holding onto my purse in the store, and being careful who approaches me on the street.

Thats just using common sense...it has nothing to do about giving I don't think, its being careful.
