Our dog was put to sleep :(

I am so sorry. Truly I understand and share your grief. We put our dog down two weeks ago and it was extremely difficult and emotional.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have been hearing that Lepto is on the rise. It's a big debate whether to vaccinate or not, altho the more cases I see, the more apt I am to go ahead and vaccinate.

If you get a chance, would you mind letting me know what area you are in. We discussing this on one of my dog lists.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I haven't read this whole trail, as my cat was just diagnosed with diabetes last night and between that and memories of putting my other cat to sleep a little over a year ago, I couldn't read the whole trail without crying uncontrollably - not a good thing to do at work.
My sympathies are with you!!
 
Thank you all for your replies. You are all so sweet. Reality is sinking in today because I woke up this morning and I didn't see my doggie jump up and down like he used to in the mornings when I got him his food and water. I have two other adult labs that also seem sad. Animals are so perceptive and smart it amazes me. I was holding my tears yesterday when I took him to the vet because I wanted to remain strong for my family, but today it when I didn't see the doggie I had to cry because I'm already missing him.

I'm going to post a couple of links for all of you that don't know what Leptospirosis (commonly called Lepto) is. It is important for all of you that have dogs to read this. This disease can be spread to humans as you will read in the links. There is a vaccine for Lepto, but there are issues in discussion about the vaccine. Most veterinarians don't want to give puppies this vaccine. My dog's vet said we were supposed to wait until he was 12 weeks old and he wasn't yet. He was only checked for parasites and had his rabies shot. However, our older dogs are vaccinated for Lepto. Again, thank you for your support.

Colleen I live in Puerto Rico. Lepto is rare in some areas and common in another areas. My older dogs are vaccinated because we live away from the city (more on the country side of the island) and we have all sorts of animals (includent rodents) that can spread Lepto. I've been reading and Hawaii is one of the states with high incidence of Lepto, but it is rising in the continental US too. If the cases you've been hearing about are in your area and your dogs are old enough to get the vaccine I would go to the vet and ask him if you should get your dogs vaccinated. If your dogs drink infected water or eat anything that has infected urine on it they can get Lepto. And in my house for example we go to work and we can't be checking what our dogs are eating or drinking all the time especially when they have a pretty big area to play around. Infected dogs are rarely cured, but there have been some successful cases. Our dog was still a puppy and they don't have their immune system completely developed yet so Lepto took a toll on him in 2 days and the vet had no choice but to put him to sleep.
