Our barn almost burned down

SRP

Cathlete
What an adventure last night. I look out my window when I hear sirens and see two fire trucks going down my parents' driveway. I jumped in my truck and followed.

My dad had been burning stuff behind our barn. Our county is currently under a burn ban, by the way. Don't ask me why he just had to burn stuff in the dryest month of the entire year.

Anyhow, the fire escaped, burned up our winter wood pile, caught the motorhome shed and the barn on fire, and started moving into the woods. Fortunately, the barn and shed only suffered minor damage (at least, it looks that way at this point), and Dad didn't lose any of the tons of equipment he has stored in the barn.

The horses were smart and stayed out to pasture instead of being their normal nosy selves. Probably the noise was too much for them.

I'll have to go down this afternoon and see the damage in daylight. I hope that man learned a little lesson. But I doubt it. Why on earth would he go off and leave somethign burning that close to the barn? He does it all the time, and this time it caught up with him.

Oh my! Shannon, I'm glad you're all right and that nobody was hurt and that the horses had the horse sense to stay away:)

You should give that man a good talking to!

Hi, Shelley - thanks a lot. Yes, everyone is fine. Believe me, I have tried to talk to that man several times, but it's like talking to a stump.

Shannon, I'm so glad noone was hurt. I can't imagine how worried you must have been when you saw the fire trucks going to your parents home. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

My sister lives in the country and they burn leaves and trash outside all the time. I have cautioned them several times about this practice but they just think I'm butting in where I don't belong.

Shannon,

I am glad no one was hurt. I remember seeing my neighbors when I lived in PA burn right under a tree and the flames would get so high that I just thought the whole tree would burn down as well. Never did, but some people should take more caution. I know it has been very dry here.

girl! what a mess.i'm glad there was no major damage! my dh is a fire hazard big time and we live out in the country too. we have burn bins and occasionally fires will get a crazy. a few summers ago dh caught the entire pasture on fire! luckily it stayed away from the barn. this past 4th of july one of the fireworks went the wrong direction and another small fire started in the pasture. gotta love the country life huh?!

jes:)

thankfully nobody was hurt and the animals are fine. i have a stubburn FIL about the burn ban as well. they really think they know it all until something happens. hopefully this will help everybody exhibit more caution around the danger of fire. hopefully the damage isn't to bad as well.

Shannon, thankfully the horses weren't in the barn. That is always a concern. The hay shed part of our barn is full of hay and if that ever caught fire, it would go up in seconds.

Hi, everyone -
Thanks so much for your concern. I really appreciate it. Another thing I realized - we were very lucky that we have NO hay in the barn right now! I'm sure that would have gone up like a torch.

We shall see if my DF learns a lesson from this.

Oh my, I hope the damage isn't too severe. People do some odd things sometimes. I had a cousin (teen) who burnt down the family garage by accident. They were {get this} flipping lit matches into a bucket of lawn mower gas. Not too bright. Poor kid was so upset he was sick to his stomach. On one hand, I felt bad for him but on the other hand...smack!!

Must be something about those "boys" and fires! My FIL started a fire 10 feet away from our garage door (which I might add is attached to my BRAND NEW HOUSE!)the very weekend we moved in!!!

He was "getting rid of the cardboard (packing) boxes".... ya know, being helpful...

Following week he was working on our tractor, had to bleed a fuel line and put GASOLINE IN MY KITCHEN!!!! (I asked my DH if his dad is a closet pyro!!!)

I hope there isn't any major property damage at your place....so scary!

Isn't it great being a member of the "sandwich generation"!?!?
