OT: Menopausal Supplement

Hi!

I'm 49, going on 50 in October. Being smack-dab in the middle of menopause (had it for last couple of years -- early bloomer!), I suffer from mood swings and hot-flashes galore.

Just wanted to tell you about this great homeopathic supplement I found. It's called Sepia. I first heard it referred to by Robin McGraw on the Dr. Phil show. She said it was good for hot-flashes.

Well, I tried it and it works wonders for me! Previously, after I'd have a cup of coffee, I'd always get hot flashes within 10 minutes of imbibing. But now, if I take a sepia pill, I don't get the hot flash. Plus, I'm not sure but I'd swear this tiny pill makes me feel more cheerful and even-tempered.

I don't really know "what" Sepia is derived from. I "Googled" it but couldn't find any info on it other than sepia photography.

You can take it in pill or liquid form -- I have it in both forms but prefer the pills. They are teeny-tiny and you put one under your tongue and let it dissolve naturally. It's kinda sweet tasting with no after-taste. I was in a health food store the other day and the woman behind the counter recommended "Motherswort" for hotflashes, so I thought, what the heck and bought it (even though I'd just picked up a couple of bottles of Sepia). Well good-golly-Ms. Molly, that Motherswort is foul, foul, foul! Tastes like bilgewater or sewage. In this case, I'd swear the cure is worse than the disease. YUCK! Not gonna take it, not gonna take it!!

The Sepia pills I like the best come in a small bright pink container. The label says "SEPIA OFFINALIS: 30CH". They aren't very expensive -- approx. $6 Canadian. They aren't usually on display on the shelves -- I always have to ask the clerk for the homeopathic section and ask for Sepia.

Sorry, don't mean to sound like an advertizement. But I just love this supplement!

Have a good one!

Patricia

Patricia:

Here is what I was able to find on this product. Not much info out there! From the info on the below link, it doesn't sound like this should be used long term. Did Robin McGraw or the health food store mention this? I'm always on the lookout for something to relieve the symptoms of menopause. I don't get hot flashes, warm yes, but not hot flashes, but I sure do have all the other symptoms!

Thanks, Mogambo!

Squid, huh? Velly interesting. Oh well, at least I'm getting my fish in everyday!

Thanks to you as well, Vicky! I've been taking sepia since the Dr. Phil show aired. As far as I know, I haven't found any side effects. Still, I'll try to be more conservative when taking them.

Thanks again!

Hi, Patricia, I am 49 going on 50 in Sept.

I have had perimenopausal symptoms for awhile now--about 4 years. About 2 years ago, I found a website called PowerSurge.com (the PowerSurge is a cute term for hot flashes) It is WONDERFUL. They have a forum too and I have fouond TONS of help for many symptoms, and they are discussed carefully by the women there. The moderator, who calls herself "Dearest", is a doll and so helpful. She has been through this already.

On this site, I heard about a soy product (I know, Iknow---soy has been discussed to death and dismissed by some)--it is called Revival Soy--(also has a website where you can order) it comes in shakes and bars. Honestly, my first reaction was "yeah yeah, I have tried to include soy and no help." But the Revival (1 shake or bar) has the equivalent of 6 servings of soy a day--the same as the average Asian diet. Finally after about 2 years. I tried it--my moods and anxiety were my worst things---and I cannot believe how much better I feel. If my anxiety and moods were at a 'bad' level of 10, they are a 3 now. Periods are better. Pms better. I will never go off this stuff. The stuff comes in bars and shakes that are lo-carb too, with splenda, if you don't like adding any sugar at all to your diet.

Try the site, and try the stuff. I am NOT a mod and don't work for Revival. I am just a really happy customer. Every herb I've tried, every supplement did NOTHING. This stuff takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to 'feel' it. I was lucky--a few days for me. :)

I also second Revival Soy. I drink a smoothie shake every morning. I make one for my husband as well. It list a whole lot of information on the website about how it helps menopause as well as "peri", SEVERE pms and also helps the heart. (that is why my husband is on it)

Sorry to ramble, I LOVE THIS STUFF TOO!

Patricia:

I was at Whole Foods Market today and looked into the Sepia. The brand I bought was Boiron, helps with hot flashes and leg problems. Main ingredient is Cuttlefish ink. As Mogombo mentioned, its a type of squid. I asked someone working in the department if it's safe to take regularly and she said yes. Still, I think it's always best to play it by ear. The directions on my bottle says 5 granules, 3 times a day. I'm going to try 5 granules once a day and go from there. Even with homeopathic remedies, too much of a good thing can have its side effects. So I'm going to give it a try since you have noticed an improvement in your mood.

Take care!

kimmie--glad to hear someone else has found RS.

My hubby was also taking the Revival, for heart. prostate and overall health. He stopped (tired of it) and I wish he would go back on it.

This stuff is GOLD! I wasted 2 years of perimeno, while on the PowerSurge forum, thinking soy wasn't really going to help. But ENOUGH soy does. Check with your doctor about your thyroid perhaps, before going on it, as in SOME people it can cause a problem. (more like exacerbate a problem that was already there, I think) but for most people--it can really help.

I feel the need to step in here and say that Revival Soy doesn't work this well for everyone. The reason I'm doing this is because I made a large investment in the stuff and it didn't work for me.

Definitely try it, but buy it a little at a time. I also feel the need to caution the people that make these claims that everyone is different. If it works for you---OUTSTANDING---but again, everyone is different.

REVIVAL SOY is not a magic potion that cures all perimenopausal symptoms for everyone.

I also think the comment "for most people soy works well" should be taken down a level or two to "for some people". We are not doctors or statisticians.

You're right, candi, it's not for everyone.

I agree with trying a little--- maybe a month at most--to see if it helps. It isn't inexpensive--about $2.00 a day. Kinda pricey for some people.

I wish it had worked for you. We all know our exercise helps though, don't we? ;-)

I just feel strongly that as much as this has helps my 'symptoms', I want to shout it off the rooftops. Cause I know how absolutely wretched and awful I felt before. I will try to remember to add a disclaimer--Try at your own risk--don't order much at first, your mileage may vary--etc, etc.......

Can you tell I'm jelous it worked for you and not for me:+ .

Low Dose BC has worked wonders for me. Hate that I have to do synthetics but hey, I finally feel normal again (for the most part).

Four months without a period. WOO-HOO. Can't wait till I'm 12 months straight and can go to HRT. Then at least I can opt for a more natural estrogen/progestin therapy:7

I'm on Yasmin low dose BC for premenopause symptoms. The first month I think I bled almost constantly... seemed to get straightened out on the second month - sigh of relief - but now, in the third month, I started my period smack in the middle of the second week of active pills and am still going in the third week of pills. Anyone else have a lot of problems with low dose bc? I had quite a bit of cramping, too, which surprised me.

Thanks,

Angela
